Sat 1st Aug 26 : Long Eaton Utd v Ilkeston (Friendly) ko 3pm

.
This is our final scheduled pre-season friendly away to our Erewash neighbours Long Eaton United.

Long Eaton finished 10th in the NPL Midlands Division last season with 58 points from 42 matches.
They finished the season strongly with just one defeat in their last eight matches.

Having recently made some good signings they have high hopes of making the extended  playoffs this coming season.

You need many due credits for everything you do on here. Match days, friendly game days and, just
now, through the close season - and still keeping us all engaged. Fan/Matchman of year - no argument! Thank you. (From Plymouth)..

Re: Sat 1st Aug 26 : Long Eaton Utd v Ilkeston (Friendly) ko 3pm

Here we go for the final pre-season friendly at Grange Park.

What a difficult task it’s been for Tris and Aaron to put together a team from scratch to play at Step 3 level. I doubted that they could do it despite all of the good reports I’d heard. But after 6 weeks we now have what looks like a reasonable team. The last two signings (Anthony Dwyer and Ash Hunter) have really perked me up.
Putting Tris and Aaron in charge always seemed to me like an experiment that couldn’t possibly work. My thoughts were that they were too nice to get results and how can a scratch side hope to compete with established Northern Premier League teams.

We’ve seen what kind of manager was at Eastwood. Tris and Aaron are nothing like that. They involve the players in looking for solutions rather than yelling and abuse,
It remains to be seen if this brings results.

I’m now starting to think we just might be good enough to stay in the league which would be a  massive achievement for a first season under Whitman and Large.

Ilkeston need to go into their first league match with some confidence so another good pre-season performance tomorrow is required. Long Eaton will be keen to show that they are capable of playing at Step 3 level so it promises to be anther interesting local derby.

Re: Sat 1st Aug 26 : Long Eaton Utd v Ilkeston (Friendly) ko 3pm

.
I think the last time we played a competitive match at Grange Park was on 23rd March 2019. It was in the season when we were in a promotion battle with Walsall Wood. It turned out to be a feisty game with several cards and injuries.
Here is my match report:

Sat 23rd March 2019  -  Midland Football League  Premier Division
Long Eaton United  2  Ilkeston Town  4
Ilkeston’s vital match with their Erewash neighbours ended with an important win and It brought an end to their seven game winless away run. In a match that had everything Ilkeston maintained their three point lead at the top of the table. The Robins led by two goals at half time and then added two more in the second half. There was then a sending off followed by a mass brawl involving virtually every player and the Ilkeston dugout. Long Eaton’s Ben Fairclough received a straight red for the overzealous tackle. Tom Marshall was given a second yellow for what followed and manager Lee Fowler was also ordered off. Soon after that there was a long hold up in play following a serious injury to a Long Eaton player and Long Eaton pulled two goals back in the final minutes.
The hosts had the first effort on goal but it was too high. On ten minutes Elliott Reeves broke through and appeared to be brought down on the edge of the area but the referee waved away the Ilkeston appeals. Long Eaton defender Ross Parker nearly turned Jamie Walker’s cross into his own goal but on 15 minutes Ilkeston did take the lead. Reco Fyfe latched onto a through ball and beat the advancing Elliott Taylor after the keeper had parried his first effort. On 29 minutes Tom Gamblen was very close but just wide with a Long Eaton free kick. Right on half time Chris Shaw put Ilkeston two up with a far post header from Fyfe’s cross.  On 53 minutes Ilkeston scored a third. Alex Marshall intercepted a back pass and lobbed perfectly over Taylor. There then followed the mass brawl which held up play for several minutes. On 70 minutes Alex Marshall scored his second and Ilkeston’s fourth with a header from a corner. There was then the serious injury to Long Eaton’s Mason Rowley which caused a twenty minute delay until an ambulance arrived. There was still over 15 minutes to play when the match resumed and the game lost it’s competitive edge. Shaun Rickford pulled one back for Long Eaton with a precise free kick into the top corner.  Ilkeston made several chances but didn’t take them and they conceded a second in the final minute when Kam Campbell scored from Rickford’s knock down.

Re: Sat 1st Aug 26 : Long Eaton Utd v Ilkeston (Friendly) ko 3pm

Matchday

The pre season has been an enormous task for Tris and Aaron . So much to do and no doubt much frustration and many disappointments. But here we are for our final friendly before the season starts in seven days time. We have 17 signed players so there’s probably a couple more to come in.
Today’s match may only be a friendly but it will be hard fought and there should be a decent Grange Park crowd with at least 100 expected from Ilkeston.

All the players are warming up now.     30 minutes to kickoff.
The seats in the stand are filling up and there's a fair few from Ilkeston
Long Eaton's normal gates are in the 200s.  There may be more than that number today.

Ex Robins Watch - Eastwood CFC take a break from washing their dirty laundry on You Tube and field a team that include five ex Robins in Keiran Fenton, Toom Marshall (captain), Curtis Thompson, Jamie Walker and Paddy. Webb.

Hunter looks very comfortable at this level seeing plenty of the ball.  Great header chance for Long Eaton but forward fails to connect with the cross. Another LE chance but No 9 fires wide from a good position.    0-0.   16 mins

According to Football Web Pages Paddy Webb has scored an hat-trick for Eastwood CFC all in the 25th minute. Could be another social media nightmare from th boys across the border!

Good effort by Dwyer but it’s wide. LE shot is parried by Wilson on to the bar. That was close.     1-1.      36 mins

Belper United are 3-0 up at Newark Town. Hucknall Town are 1-0 up at AFC Mansfield and Heanor Town are 1-0 up at Leicester Nirvana. Alnwick Town are goalless at Jarrow.

Re: Sat 1st Aug 26 : Long Eaton Utd v Ilkeston (Friendly) ko 3pm

Another close shave for Ilkeston but it’s only a Long Eaton corner.   LE No 7 playing on the left wing is causing problems. Seaton finds net but its offside.
Half time.  1-1

Fair scoreline

Hunter looks Ilkeston’s best player so far. Long eaton are playing on the counter and looking dangerous,
LE no 7 and no 9 look good players. Ilkeston trialist no 4 is worth signing in my opinion.
Several changes being made for the second half.
Ilkeston fans are getting frustrated with the safety first back passing

Alnwick went 2-0 down at Jarrow but have pulled a goal back through a penalty just before the break to make it 2-1.
