With only the top club in our division guaranteed automatic promotion, it's going to be really difficult to achieve our ambition. At this moment in time we are very much outsiders but there is still a long way to go and things can change dramatically. The Ilkeston team and performances have greatly improved since the beginning of the season and we have now started to see some consistency in displays if not results. We now need to go on a prolonged winning run and hope that our promotion rivals start to drop points. We have left ourselves with a mountain to climb but could still make a late challenge. Our main rivals appear to be Walsall Wood (who we have yet to play), Studley, Leicester Road, Atherstone and Hinckley and we probably need to take maximum points from the outstanding fixtures against each of them. If we can do that then we are still in with a chance, There's still a lot of games to be played but Ilkeston cannot afford to drop many more points. The next three games against Stafford Town, Heather St Johns and Paget Rangers need to yield maximum points. That would give us a five game winning run and may give us the confidence we need to go on and make a serious bid to win the league and that automatic promotion spot.

On the IFSG forum Red has started an excellent new thread called "Midland Football League Division One Title Race". It shows the all important points scored per game played for each of the top clubs.

I looked at the stats as well and looked at who Walsall Wood have beaten this season and I found that hey have beat some of the contenders by good margins. For me they are the team to beat and we play them twice which means six points from those games will be a massive boost. I think other teams must be starting to fear us when they look at recent results. Things are looking good!!

Ilkeston are on a roll after 5 cosecutive wins but Walsall Wood and Studley are still the teams to catch. Racing Club Warwick are another team with improved recent results. Before Ilkeston's game with Paget Rangers I asked one of their officials who he thought was the best team they had played against and he said Racing Club Warwick.

Only one significant result for us yesterday but a good one :
Leicester Road 1 Studley 0
Personally I'm not overly concerned about Studley because of the way we outplayed them. It's becoming more obvious every week that Walsall Wood are the favourites to win the league. They just keep winning. We can only hope that they become victims of their own success. They are still in various cup competitions and this could create a backlog of league fixtures for them later in the season. Meanwhile we have to keep winning our games especially against our promotion rivals and hope that the other contenders have a few slip ups.
December 9th we play Walsall Wood at home. That is a match that we have to win to stand any chance of overhauling them.

After Tues 14th November matches the Points dropped table looks like this (Top 10 teams)
Matches Points Points
Played Gained Dropped
1 Walsall Wood 14 37 5
2 Studley 17 39 12
3 Atherstone 14 30 12

5 Racing Club Warwick 13 24 15
6 Hinckley AFC 16 32 16
7 Ilkeston Town 17 33 18
8 Coventry Copsewood 16 28 20
9 Lichfield City 15 23 22
10 Heather St Johns 14 20 22
Since the table on 22nd October the following points have been dropped by the top ten ;
Walsall Wood - No points dropped
Studley - 5 points dropped (Drew with Atherston, Lost to Leicester Road)
Atherstone - 2 points dropped (Drew with Studley)
Leicester Road - 5 points dropped (Lost to Hinckley, Drew with Heath Hayes)
Racing Club - No points dropped
Hinckley AFC - 3 points dropped (Lost to Walsall Wood )
Ilkeston - No points dropped
Coventry Copsewood - No points dropped
Lichfield City - 6 points dropped (Lost to Stafford and Leicester Road)
Heather St Johns - 8 points dropped (Lost to Ilkeston and Lichfield, Drew with Littleton)
Despite our winning run, Ilkeston are still 7th best in the Points Dropped Table but with the notable exception of Walsall Wood most of the other teams have recently dropped points. We haven't seen Walsall Wood yet but they seem unstoppable. Because of their incredible consistency we simply have to take six points off them and hope that some of the other top teams can take points off them too. Walsall Wood appear to be the outstanding team in this league and must be odds on favourites to win the automatic promotion spot. There is still a long way to go and the six other most likely title contenders appear to be : Studley, Ilkeston, Leicester Road, Atherstone and Hinckley. Any of these teams will be thinking that if they can put together a winning run then they still have a chance. Racing Club Warwick are possible outsiders having played only 13 matches.

This Saturday 25th November sees every team in MFL Division One involved in a league game so I'll update the Points Dropped league after then. The key game for us is Atherstone at home to Walsall Wood.
We are desperate for Walsall Wood to drop points as they have only dropped 5 so far against our 18. Atherstone must still consider themselves in with a promotion chance as they have only dropped 12 points so far which is better than second placed Studley who have dropped 14 points. Racing Club Warwick have played the least number of matches but have only dropped 15 points so far. As well as playing Saturday at Stafford they play again on Monday at Chelmsley.
For us to catch Walsall Wood :
If Atherstone were to beat them on Saturday then they will have dropped 10 points less than us. If we were to beat Walsall Wood twice then we only need other teams to take 5 points off them for us to be in pole position. That's assuming that we keep winning of course,

We got the result we needed today ; Atherstone 3 Walsall Wood 2. In the conventional League Table we've hit the top spot, if only for one week. In the Points Dropped Table our record compared to our rivals has improved but we're still in seventh position.

Played Gained Dropped
1 Walsall Wood 16 40 8

7 ILKESTON 20 42 18
8 Coventry Copsewood 18 31 23
9 Littleton 17 28 23
10 Lichfield 17 26 25
No doubt each of the top seven will have hopes of finishing top and grabbing single the promotion spot. Walsall Wood are still best placed but their defeat ro Atherstone will have given a boost to their rivals. Ilkeston are looking stronger every week.and must now fancy their chances when they play Walsall Wood on 9th December. For what it's worth two of the Uttoxeter officials said Ilkeston were the best team in the league. Then again they have a grudge against Walsall Wood who pulled a fast one on them. They said Walsall Wood wanted 5 players from Hinckley but apparently league rules allow them to take 4, The other player Walsall Wood wanted signed for Uttoxeter. However after the required minimum 14 days at Uttoxeter, Walsall Wood then gave 7 days notice and signed him, Uttoxeter were not happy that they had been used.

Despite Ilkeston's eight match run of victories we are still only 7th best in terms of points dropped. This is because the other teams in the top seven are themselves dropping very few points. We are approaching the half way mark in the season and the Division One table has started to take shape with the top seven looking stronger than the rest. It has now become rare for a top seven side to drop points against teams outside the top seven. Therefore matches between top seven contenders look like deciding who will be champions.
Saturday 9th December sees Ilkeston host Walsall Wood. You can be sure that Leicester Road, Studley, Atherstone, Hinckley and Racing Club Warwick will be monitoring this game's progress as the result could have a massive bearing on their chances of winning the league. I guess most would want a draw so that both teams drop two points or if not a draw a win for Ilkeston. Walsall Wood are in pole position at the moment and a win for them would be a major blow to the aspirations of the other contenders.

After Walsall Wood's two recent defeats by Ilkeston and Atherstone, there is now only a seven points dropped gap between the top seven. Any of the top seven will now think it possible that they could win the league if they can go on a winning run. Ilkeston have dropped the most points in the top seven but they are the current form team with nine consecutive wins.

Weather permitting, next Saturday should see a further improvement of Ilkeston's standing in the Points Dropped Table. This is due to four of the top seven playing against each other. The big match is Walsall Wood at home to Leicester Road. Our best scenario is for Walsall Wood not to win. A draw would probably be ideal. The other pairing is Hinckley v Racing Club Warwick. Both these clubs may be viewed as slight outsiders but they're both well placed. Racing Club Warwick have so far only played twice against their top seven rivals so they could well influence the final positions. Racing Club have won their last six league games against Chelmsley, Stafford, Bolehall, Nuneaton Griff, Paget Rangers and Uttoxeter. A draw against Hinckley would be good for us meaning that both teams drop two points. Meanwhile Atherstone are home to Uttoxeter, Studley are away to Coventry Alvis and Ilkeston must not slip up at Cadbury.

Today the weather robbed us of improving our position due to the Walsall Wood v Leicester Road and the Hinckley v R C Warwick matches being called off, Atherstone were the only top seven side to play and they improved their position with a ridiculous 13-1 win against Uttoxeter. Maybe Uttoxeter owe the other teams in the league an explanation of such a poor performance. Meanwhile Ilkeston's postponement today means we now have a three week period without a match.

In today's big game affecting the top, Studley were beaten by Atherstone therefore dropping 3 points. Leicester Road were surprisingly beaten at home by Nuneaton Griff so they dropped 3 points too. Hinckley only drew with Lichfield so they dropped 2 points. These results have helped Ilkeston to close the gap in the Points Dropped Table. It is now in our own hands to catch every team with the exception of Walsall Wood. We need to beat Walsall Wood in our return game and hope that they drop a further 5 points.
Ilkeston are again without a game on Boxing Day giving the other top seven teams the opportunity to improve their position. These are the fixtures:
Coventry Alvis v Atherstone
Pershore v R C Warwick
Brocton v Chelmsley
Heath Hayes v Leicester Road
Hinckley v Heather St Johns
Nuneaton Griff v Lichfield
Paget Rangers v Cadbury
Studley v Littleton
Uttoxeter v Bolehall
Walsall Wood v Stafford
All of our top seven rivals should pick up three points. If that happens then Ilkeston could drop to sixth in the conventional League Table as their rivals catch up with their games in hand.

Two good results for Ilkeston today but Walsall Wood march relentlessly towards the title. Well done to Heather St Johns who scored a late winner to beat Hinckley. After trailing 0-1 at half time they went 3-1 up before Hinckley levelled it at 3-3. Also well done to Littleton who won at Studley. Littleton are on a great run winning their last six league games including beating Atherstone as well as Studley.

It's difficult to see who apart from ourselves are going to take points off Walsall Wood. I'm still hoping that at the end of the season the reorganisation of the leagues might open up another promotion spot. If not I am sure we will be transferred to the East Midland Counties League and to be honest I can't see anybody challenging us in that league. I went to watch Kimberley MW play Belper United a few weeks ago and although both teams sit near the top of the table and Kimberley won easily I did not see anything to worry Ilkeston. If we do go up we will probably go into the Midlands Football League Premier which includes Heanor, Long Eaton and Worcester City. Definitely more local games than we got now next season.

Leicester Road, Studley and Hinckley have now dropped more points than Ilkeston having lost or drawn matches recently. Consistent Walsall Wood are still best placed with Atherstone being their closest challengers. Third placed Racing Club Warwick have only played two matches against the other six of the top seven sides in the league ie Walsall Wood (lost 4-0) and Studley (drew 1-1) so have yet to prove themselves as serious contenders. Their ten remaining matches against the other top seven teams will be crucial in deciding the outcome of the promotion race.

Five points dropped in our last two games seems to have extinguished our hopes of catching Walsall Wood. However we must keep going as even if we don't catch them it's still worth trying to finish as runner up as it would set us up for another promotion push next season. Where ever we finish, it's still been an exceptional season for supporters results wise after last season's struggles.
While the other leading sides have been dropping points Littleton have been on a terrific winning run and they are now level with Ilkeston in terms of points dropped.
Here is the latest table showing points gained and dropped. With the exception of Racing Club Warwick there is now not a big difference in the number of matches played by each team. So I have left the teams in the same order as in the conventional league table

This is how the Points Dropped Table looks tonight after Racing Club Warwick's defeat at Heather St Johns :
Played Points Points
Gained Dropped
1 Walsall Wood 27 68 13
2 R C Warwick 24 50 22
3 Hinckley AFC 26 55 23
4 Ilkeston Town 28 58 26
5) Atherstone Town 29 59 28
5) Leicester Road 29 59 28
The five teams below Walsall Wood are now bunched much more closely together in terms of points dropped .
Walsall Wood look certain to be champions but any of the chasing pack could take the runner up spot.
