Glossop Match Report

This Derbyshire Senior Cup tie had added significance for the new Ilkeston Town FC because it gave them a chance to measure themselves against a team two leagues higher. Many supporters made the journey to North Derbyshire and they were not disappointed. It was a close contest throughout with Glossop probably having the edge in the first half when they looked very sharp gong forward. Their best chance fell to Ben Deegan who should have scored with a header from a Zeph Thomas cross. Ilkeston shocked the hosts by taking the lead with a good finish from Montel Gibson on 23 minutes but Glossop stormed back and quickly equalised through Jude Oyibo on 25 minutes. Ilkeston's defence was sternly tested before half time with centre back Charlie Jemson outstanding. Ilkeston brought on Lavell White for the second half and his speed and skill added fire power to Ilkeston's attack as they started to come more and more into the game. Both teams were making chances and more goals seemed inevitable. Lee Rick had a great opportunity for Glossop but Ian Deakin somehow smothered his close range shot. Ilkeston had a strong penalty appeal when Tim Hopkinson appeared to be brought down but the referee gave him a yellow for simulation much to the relief of the Glossop fans. Deakin had to fingertip a fierce shot over as Glossop tried to force a win but the game ended all square with penalties to decide the winners. Ilkeston had the first spot kick and Billy Bennett scored. Glossop captain Courtney Meppen-Walter made it 1-1. Then Paul Phillips saved Jamie Walker's kick and Lee Rick gave Glossop a 2-1 advantage. Tom Marshall scored to make it 2-2 then Gary Gee slammed his kick against the crossbar to lose Glossop's advantage. Alex Marshall put Ilkeston 3-2 ahead  before Deakin saved Lewis Lacy's kick leaving Chris Shaw with the chance to win it and he nearly burst the net. Ilkeston's players and fans celebrated a hard fought and morale boosting win while the Glossop players trudged off disappointed.

Re: Glossop Match Report

Terrific result and agree Ian Deakin and Charlie Jemson were outstanding! They were lovely people at Glossop and after the match I could not bring myself to tell them that we rested our top scorer, our set piece expert and our midfield dynamo and we still won!
The mighty Whaley Bridge next round. Whaley Who? (Hope I don't regret this tongue in cheek comment! Sorry Whaley B)

Re: Glossop Match Report

Just checked up on Whaley Bridge Athletic and they are no mugs. Yes they are a step below Ilkeston Town but why won the Cheshire League last season and are leading the table this season. So a tough test is ahead of us!
