Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

We're off.   Corner to Whaley Bridge from their first attack.  Headed clear by Shaw. Free kick to Ilkeston near Corner flag.  Cleared   Early pressure by Ilkeston. Barlow has chance for Bridge but he's off target.      0-0    7 minutes

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

Fairclough gets a shot in but keeper saves.  Broom does well to win a corner for Bridge but it's cleared. Great chance for Gilbride after he takes advantage of Jemson slip  but he puts it wide with just Deakin to beat.        0-0    15 minutes

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

Leadbetter forces Deakin to save well  at his near post.  Then Leadbetter tries a lob from distance and it's only just too high.  Third chance falls for Leadbetter. He's is threatening to score.      still 0-0    25 minutes.

So far Ilkeston are having more possession but the best chances are falling to Whaley Bridge on the break.       Still no score after 40 minutes

Long shot from Barlow but is no bother for Deakin.  Ilkeston are not at their best.  It's half time and no score.

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

Half time substitutions :  Lench off Tom Marshall on.

Two Ilkeston players collide.  Looks nasty both players on the deck. Can't see who, as it's at the far end of the pitch

(Later told it was Shaw and Jemson)

Both have recovered.  Great run by Fairclough finds Walker whose cross finds Alex Marshall but he can't get his header on target.      55 minutes

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

Another chance for Whaley Bridge but they can't convert    GOAL !   58 minutes scorer Tim Hopkinson.  That should relieve the pressure building up.

Just spotted Billy Bennett is on. I think Hodgett-Young is off.  Hopkinson finds the net but flag is up for offside.        1-0    65 minutes

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

Excellent play by Walker but keeper gathers his cross. Ilkeston are looking more creative this half but we need another goal.  Alex Marshall fires inches wide with keeper stranded. Great try by Alex. Shaw goes in strongly and gets a yellow.  So does Burgess for Whaley Bridge. Presumably he said something.
Leadbetter replaced by O'Donnell on 79 minutes

Half chance for Marshall from Gibson's cross but his header is wide..  Big chance for Alex to win the game but keeper denies him.

Montel's cross beats everyone.   It's finished so it's a penalty shootout.

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

Match Summary :
Whaley Bridge gave a very good account of themselves and edged the first half. They certainly look more like scoring with the impressive Sammy Leadbetter creating several chances for himself. Steve Chettle sussed out the danger and cut off Leadbetter's supply in the second half with some tactical changes. Ilkeston came more into the game after half time but Whaley Bridge always felt they could win.  Ilkeston finally went ahead just before the hour mark through Tim Robinson. Alex Marshall went close on a couple of occasions but on 80 minutes Whaley Bridge equalised through Jack Kelly.  Two minutes from time Alex Marshall had a big chance when through but the keeper denied him. A draw at the end of 90 minutes was a fair reflection. The penalty shootout went in a similar way to the one at Glossop with our opponents getting an early advantage after an Ilkeston miss. Then it was Deakin to the rescue with two saves to win it.

Re: Ilkeston v Whaley Bridge _ Live Updates

I was impressed with Whaley Bridge first half and as you say Sam Leadbetter gave Charlie Jemson's a torrid time. With a bit more clinical finishing they could have had it sewn up by half time. Congratulations must go to Steve Chettle who bravely made two tactical substitutions at half time. Ilkeston looked a different team second half pressing more and showing much more greater urgency. When Hopkinson scored I thought it was all over but Whaley Bridge have won leagues for a reason and they kept plugging away and got their reward. Deakin again came to the rescue in the shoot out to see Ilkeston to a semi final with Alfreton Town at the Impact Arena and a reunion with former secretary Andrew Raison. Finally I must congratulate Whaley Bridge - pleasant officials.and sporting players. Their secretary joked before the game that they were playing 9 1 0 formation! They certainly did not do that and were probably the most attack minded team seen at the NMG this season!
