It's all in midfield in the opening minutes. First chance to Basford but the header is weak and Ganley collects easily. First Ilkeston attack is ended by an offside flag.      0-0    7 minutes

Reeves again does well but his cross beats everyone. Jermain Hollis and a Basford player accidentally clash heads, both down injured.  Great interception by Lavell.  Then a Basford shot flashes across ILkeston's goal. Wakefield shot deflected wide by defender. Great effort by Courtney Richard is brilliantly saved.      1-3  69 minuted

Reeves booked for a foul.  Ilkeston want the final whistle to come.   There it goes.  Poor end to the match for Ilkeston after doing ok until the final 15 minutes.  Four goals conceded in final 13 minutes.

Result  :   Basford United 7  Ilkeston Town  1

Re: Basford United v Ilkeston Town ( today, Sat 27th July) : Live Updates

Four goals in the final 13 minutes emphasised the gulf in class of Basford's finishing power compared with Ilkeston's. The Robins had their fair share of possession, especially in the second half but Basford made far more scoring opportunities. Obviously conceding four late goals is disappointing, to say the least.

Re: Basford United v Ilkeston Town ( today, Sat 27th July) : Live Updates

Match Report :
Sat 27th July 2019
Basford United  7  Ilkeston Town  1
Four goals conceded in the final 13 minutes culminated in Ilkeston’s biggest pre-season defeat. Premier Division Basford were always favourites to win but the four late goals made the scoreline very disappointing from Ilkeston’s viewpoint. Basford’s squad contained eight ex Ilkeston players and three of them created the first Basford goal. Callum Chettle sent Kane Richards free down the right and his cross was bundled in by Liam Hearn on 16 minutes. Before Ilkeston could recover it was 2-0 after Kane Richards raced through and slotted the ball past Brandon Ganley. Ilkeston got one back on 34 minutes through Elliott Reeves who did well to create the chance and then take it. Five minutes later, players on both sides were bemused by the referee awarding Basford a penalty from which Hearn made it 3-1. Before half time Jordan Nadat brought a good save from Kieran Preston and Basford went close when a Kane Richards shot hit one of his own players. Ilkeston started the second half strongly. Reeves’s shot was deflected wide and a powerful Courtney Richards effort was just too high. Harry Wakefield had a shot deflected wide by a Basford defender and another Courtney Richards effort was brilliantly saved. With 15 minutes left Ilkeston looked capable of rescuing the game but on 77 minutes Basford scored again with a Courey Grantham tap in to make it 4-1. The same player scored again with a great finish on 82 minutes. Ilkeston were by now deflated and two minutes later Connor Green made it six from the edge of the area. Two minutes after that James Carvell completed the scoring to end Ilkeston’s misery.

Re: Basford United v Ilkeston Town ( today, Sat 27th July) : Live Updates

Despite reports on the Basford United twitter feed that the final score was 8-1 it was definitely only 7-1. When you get stuffed like that you rarely forget how many goals they get! However up until the 77th minutes Ilkeston were still in the game at 1-3 and looked most liked scoring next. At that stage Basford suddenly hit a golden patch and took us apart! We now regroup and go again against Clifton in Tuesday evening.

Re: Basford United v Ilkeston Town ( today, Sat 27th July) : Live Updates

Actually, I don't think we played as badly as the scoreline suggests. But we were certainly given a lesson in clinical finishing in the last 15 minutes. I don't imagine Lee Fowler will be too happy at the way we appeared to capitulate. Nick Hawkins certainly wasn't.
Basford looked a really strong side and will probably be challenging for promotion to the National League.

Re: Basford United v Ilkeston Town ( today, Sat 27th July) : Live Updates

How good were basford?

I think they will take some beating this season and with a bit of luck they might have a good cup run.

Back to us that was probably one of the worst performances by a Ilkeston team I have seen in years. In the 1st half we didn't get the rub of the green from the referee. A hand ball by their keeper outside of the box and the penalty they got will be one of the softest you will see this season, he went down like a sack of spuds, for a great big bloke what a pansy.

Back to Ilkeston. Were do you start.

Goalkeeper:- the pair we have are not good enough. I've played with better Sunday morning keepers. Some one call Alan Rigby he would do a better job and I bet he's over 50.

Back 4 :- Tom is no centre half. Right back for him. Lavell RM for him. His work rate is fantastic and his partnership with TM on the right gives great balance to the team. MR will be a good centre half but he needs a old head next to him. Left back :- god we are missing Billy Bennett. Hopefully get somebody in on loan before the start of the season.

Midfield :- this is were I think we are the strongest. Any one of 8 players could fit into the 4 spots we have so I'm not that worried with that part of our team.

Forwards :- loads of combos here and if one player gets off to a flying start the he will play all season

Ovarall :- we have a team good enough not to go down but we are Ilkeston fans and we demand a little bit better than that.

Re: Basford United v Ilkeston Town ( today, Sat 27th July) : Live Updates

I'd forgotten about the Basford keeper handling the ball well outside of his area. It seemed like everyone in the ground saw it except the referee. Everyone in the stand was wondering how he and the linos missed it. As for the penalty, not one Basford player appealed which says a lot. The referee must have seen something but the Basford players certainly seemed a little embarrassed by the award.

Must admit that I was really impressed by the performances of the young ex-Ilkeston players who have come on by leaps and bounds especially Callum Chettle and Kane Richards. James Reid and Liam Hearn also showed that they can still play.
