Defences dominated Ilkeston’s sixth league game resulting in a third stalemate at the NMG. Ilkeston never really looked liked conceding a goal but neither did they look likely to score one. Apart from a brief spell in the second half when the Robins forced four corners in quick succession, the match always looked goalless. Both sides were guilty of giving the ball away too often. The first worthwhile effort on goal was by Spalding’s Scott Floyd whose curling shot was only just wide on nine minutes. This was followed by Cameron Dear’s effort for Ilkeston which was too high. On 20 minutes Joel Brownhill saw Richard Stainsby off his line but couldn’t find the net. Ten minutes later Floyd produced the first shot on target but Stainsby was easily equal to it. Three minutes later, Reco Fyfe put Alex Marshall through on goal but keeper Michael Duggan collided with him and the free kick went Spalding’s way. Just before half time a rare mistake by Tyreece Robinson gave Zuerner a chance for Spalding but he hurriedly fired wide. New signing Rod Orlando-Young was introduced early in the second half and Ilkeston at last began to look more dangerous. Ilkeston’s best spell came after 70 minutes when they forced a flurry of corners which had Spalding under real pressure. In the final quarter Orlando-Young had a shot saved and Duggan had to race out of his area to head clear but in the end Ilkeston failed to find a way past Duggan and Spalding were happy to take a point.
