Ilkeston Town v Newcastle Town (Sat 28th Sep. ko 3pm)

Thanks to a Lithuanian rescue plane, I'm back from Greece to cover this afternoon's match. The cabin crew on the aircraft were redundant Thomas Cook staff who volunteered to help get stranded holidaymakers home without pay.

There are only four league matches this afternoon due to some teams playing in the FA Trophy Extra Preliminary round.
          Belper v Stocksbridge PS
          Ilkeston v Newcastle
          Sutton Coldfield v Market Drayton
          Worksop v Leek

A win for Ilkeston will take them up to third providing Stocksbridge don't get an equivalent winning score at Belper.
A win for Leek Town at Worksop would give them top spot.

Match updates as usual here on whiteballproject

Sluggish start by Ilkeston.  The wind isn't helping. Ilkeston haven't created a chance. Michael Conlon fires wide for Newcastle from edge of area. Best effort so far      0-0     14 minutes

Free kick to Ilkeston on edge of area but shot is straight at keeper. Good spell of attacking possession by Ilkeston. Great run by Jack Van Der Lan and only brave goalkeeping by Durrant stops him from scoring.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Newcastle Town (Sat 28th Sep. ko 3pm)

Terrific run by Reco. Just before half time Newcastle nearly concede when Keeper Ranjan Gill spills the ball but they scramble it away.
Half time , its goalless. Loads of chances, Newcastle having slightly more but Ilkeston finished the half the stronger after a hesitant start.
Half time score  :   ILKESTON TOWN   0  NEWCASTLE TOWN  0

Very impressed with loanee, Ryan Campbell-Gordon who has been outstanding as an attacking wing back.
For some reason, the Newcastle keeper has been allowed to play in a red jersey very similar to Ilkeston's shirts.

Vann Dar Laan shot curls wide. Goal Newcastle Ilkeston defender guilty of gifting them a goal    1-3  93  minutes.   And There goes the whistle
Result   ILKESTON  3  NEWCASTLE  1

Pity to give away the softest goal ever at the end but it's three points and to be fair 0-3 would have been a harsh score line on Newcastle who were well in the game until  Ilkeston's  late flurry.

Re: Ilkeston Town v Newcastle Town (Sat 28th Sep. ko 3pm)

After match comments :

First of all, Newcastle turned out to be much better than most of us anticipated.  They were the probably the better side in the early stages and it wasn't until about halfway through the first half that Ilkeston began to get a grip. Durrant, not for the first time, stopped us from going behind. In a match we expected to dominate Newcastle certainly deserved to be level at half time and It wasn't until the final 15 minutes that they finally capitulated. Ilkeston's breakthrough goal was unlucky for Newcastle because it looked like an Ilkeston header went behind for a goal kick but a corner was given. Ilkeston then profited from the corner when Mason Lee headed in at the near post. The corner was flicked on by Shaun Harrad and Lee instinctively finished.  This was followed by the first penalty goal which saw Newcastle heads drop for the first time as they realised that their efforts looked like being in vain and the game was now beyond them. The second penalty made the win look more emphatic than it was but then we gave away a silly goal right on time much to the displeasure of Ross Durrant.

Very pleased for Mason Lee to score the vital opening goal. He's been more patient than others waiting for his chance.
Most would agree that we are so lucky to have the best keeper in the League in Ross Durrant.
In Reco Fyfe we probably have one of the most skilful players at this level and it must only be a matter of time before a Football League club come in with an offer for him.
Finally, what a debut by Ryan Campbell-Gordon. It's not often that a debutant gets man of the match. He was absolutely outstanding attacking down the left side with superb skill and  acceleration. He's with us on loan from Port Vale so unfortunately we may not have for him long.
Defensively we look sound with Dean Freeman and Chris Robertson forming a formidable barrier.
