We're at the ground following an easy journey. The pitch is very wet but just playable. The game was in serious doubt at 1 30pm. The officials took such a long time inspecting that everyone feared the worst. Eventually the officials insisted on extra forking in the centre area which doesn't have much grass on it.

Cleethorpes officials say they are expecting a 500 gate.

Good start by Ilkeston but Cleethorpes finished the half strongly and had the better chances. Ilkeston are still very much in the game and it's all to play for in the second half. The next goal is all important.

Marshall penalty miss proves costly

It was a cracking game at Cleethorpes enjoyed by both sets of supporters. Well done to the Cleethorpes ground staff who worked hard to get the pitch playable. Well done to both teams who played with great commitment throughout and also the referee. Although it was another defeat, this was a decent performance from the Ilkeston players who gave it their best shot in sapping conditions. Cleethorpes are an excellent side and it's easy to see why they have only dropped one point at home. A great advert for non league football and rival fans enjoying the game together. Also a lovely pre-Christmas atmosphere in the clubhouse after the game as fans and players from both clubs intermingled.

This was the first of four very tough matches against promotion contenders and we now look to recover with a win against Carlton at the NMG on Boxing Day. After the recent setbacks, a win is surely just around the corner.

Cleethorpes Town 2 Ilkeston Town 1
Once again Ilkeston were beaten by the odd goal in an entertaining match against promotion contenders Cleethorpes Town. The Robins were denied the point they probably deserved when Theo Richardson saved Alex Marshall’s penalty 15 minutes from time. The game started at a hectic pace and Jamie Walker almost put Ilkeston ahead on 5 minutes when his shot was deflected behind. At the other end Kieran Fenton rescued Ilkeston with a last ditch tackle. On 15 minutes Reco Fyfe created a real chance when he rolled the ball across the Cleethorpes goal line but no one was able to get on the end of it. Cleethorpes wide man Curtis Bateson then fired into the side netting after cutting inside. A glancing header by Walker was just wide and two minutes later Ross Durrant denied Jon Oglesby with a super save. The opening goal arrived on 28 minutes, a powerful header by Cleethorpes top scorer Scott Vernon from an Oglesby cross. Ilkeston fought back and Kieran Wells flashed a header just wide. Durrant was called upon again just before half time to keep the hosts lead to a single goal. Ilkeston started the second half with renewed determination and were rewarded with a Ryan Campbell-Gordon equaliser on 53 minutes. Richardson saved bravely at the feet of Wells and Ilkeston were unlucky to find themselves behind again on 63 minutes. It came from a lightning counter attack and terrific finish by Bateson. Wells was proving to be a handful for the Cleethorpes defenders and Ilkeston had a big penalty shout when he went down under challenge in the penalty area. The referee said no but two minutes later he did point to the spot. Unfortunately the penalty was missed and despite a big effort by Ilkeston to find an equaliser, the Cleethorpes defenders denied them any further opportunities.
