For teams in promotion positions it is very unfortunate for them that they miss out following a “Null and void” scenario. However there is no way that any contrived solution is going to be fair to each and every Club.
Liverpool fan Jeremy Ruane, understandably desperate for the Premiership season not to be declared null and void, suggested the following as a way of completing the season.
He said “May I suggest applying a 0-0 scoreline for all games still to be played so you end up with a complete league table."
I had not heard of this contrived solution so I applied it to our league and this is the resulting final league table :
Pts
1 Leek 82
2 Stamford 79
3 Cleethorpes 66
4 Belper Town 61
5 Carlton 60
6 Stocksbridge 55
7 Sutton Cold. 54
8 Kidsgrove 50
9 Frickley 50
10 Ilkeston 49
11 Sheffield 48
12 Loughboro. D 48
13 Worksop 44
!4 Glossop 41
15 Chasetown 40
16 Spalding 40
17 Newcastle 36
18 Lincoln Utd 36
19 Market Drayton 28
20 Wisbech 27
With each team getting a single point for each of their outstanding fixtures, the placings in the final league table of actual matches played is not disturbed too much but at the same time the 0-0 contrived results are not realistic meaning some teams lose out and some gain.
For instance Sheffield with 11 games left and 8 of them at home would have expected to pick up more than 11 points.
