Match of the month :
Tue 20th August 2019
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Stamford  4  Ilkeston Town  2
After leading at half time Ilkeston were hit by a storming Stamford comeback. Ilkeston edged the first half and deservedly led by a stunning Cameron Dear goal. But the second half saw Ilkeston under constant pressure. It was fast and furious from the kickoff but opportunities were few with defences generally on top. Ilkeston nearly scored on 5 minutes when Daniels defender Sean Wright was perilously close to putting the ball into his own net. Stamford were near to opening the scoring on 30 minutes but were thwarted by Ross Durrant who pulled off two fine saves in quick succession.  Seven minutes later Ilkeston were ahead courtesy of Dear’s superb 25 yard blockbuster. Stamford retaliated immediately and Durrant was called upon again to preserve the lead. That was quickly followed by a Stamford header which hit the angle of post and crossbar. Stamford started the second half with a series of near misses but the pressure told on 57 minutes when their flying winger Cosmas Matwasa crossed for Tendai Chitiza to bundle in. Lavell White rescued Ilkeston with a goal line block as Ilkeston struggled to get out of their own half. Then totally against the run of play Ilkeston scored a fortunate second with Cameron Dear again the scorer on 75 minutes. Undeterred Stamford roared back and equalised on 78 minutes through Rob Morgan. Then came the goal of the game from Pearson Mwanyongo to put Stamford ahead with three minutes left. His unstoppable shot dipped perfectly into the top corner of the net from 30 yards. Ilkeston threw caution to the wind in an effort to rescue a point but it backfired when Stamford broke to score a fourth by Oliver Brown-Hill.

We didn’t realise at the time that our first two league matches were against sides who would finish in the top three. This game was a cracker with the result in doubt until the final moments. We had great support that night and got off to a great start with Cameron Dear’s blockbuster. Rob Morgan was Stamford’s star man and dragged them back into the game after going 2-1 behind with 15 minutes left. It was disappointing to lose but Stamford were worthy winners.

Re: Season 2019-20 : Match of the month

September 2019 matches played

Spalding United (home)               draw  0-0
Frickley Athletic   (away)               won  3-1
Leek Town  (away)                        lost   1-2
Market Drayton  (home)                won  3-0
Newcastle Town  (home)               won  3-1

Match of the month :
Tue 10th September 2019
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Leek Town  2  Ilkeston Town  1
Despite leading for most of the game Ilkeston finally succumbed to two late goals and ended the game with only nine players as Leek extended their 100% start. The first red card on 77 minutes was given to goalkeeper Richard Stainsby after he was adjudged to have fouled a Leek forward when trying to clear. With no substitute keeper on the bench Tom Marshall had to pull on the jersey. The dismissal proved to be pivotal as prior to that Ilkeston had dealt with everything Leek had thrown at them with Chris Robertson and Dean Freeman both outstanding. Ilkeston’s second dismissal was in added time when Alex Marshall saw red for a dangerous challenge. Ilkeston got off to a wonderful start when Rod Orlando-Young outpaced a defender and fired past the onrushing Leek keeper. Ilkeston were superb in the opening quarter but gradually Leek worked their way back into the game. On 14 minutes Reco Fyfe made an excellent run and created a chance for Orlando-Young whose shot was just over the bar and on 25 minutes Freeman’s header was also just too high. Leek’s best efforts were a header by Tim Grice and a Robert Stevenson shot into the side netting. Leek started the second half strongly and Darren Chadwick headed over from a corner. For Ilkeston, a Shaun Harrad header went narrowly wide. On 70 minutes Stevenson spurned a decent opportunity to level as Leek started to get on top. Seven minutes later came the penalty incident and influential Leek captain, Chadwick gave Tom Marshall no chance from the spot. Decisions seemed to be going Leek’s way and from a free kick they went ahead on 83 minutes with Chadwick again the scorer. Alex Marshall almost rescued a point for Ilkeston with a powerful header which Danny Roberts turned over.

The Supporters Group hired a double decker for this away game and a memorable journey it proved to be. It was very disappointing to lose this one as the game changed on a refereeing decision when Ilkeston were leading. Ilkeston keeper Richard Stainsby seemed harshly treated when a penalty was given against him as he challenged for the ball. Then as if that wasn’t bad enough he was showed a red card.

Re: Season 2019-20 : Match of the month

Yes this was very eventful evening! On the bus there was a stop at the side of the A52 outside Ashbourne for a comfort break in broad daylight!! The bus struggled up the hills which normally would not have not been a problem but we had the kit and all the team bits and pieces on the bus and we were running very late. Got to the ground just in time whilst the players waited patiently for the kit. We played out of our skins and dominated the game for an hour until Richard Stainsby (Biggles) was harshly dismissed by the ref. Leek were ruthless and scored from the resulting penalty past stand in keeper Tom Marshall before adding a second  to win the game. Alex Marshall came on as a late sub to try and rescue the situation for Ilkeston but in typical Alex fashion he was booked and then sent off minutes after coning on. There was a bit of argy bargy at the final whistle and as a club we let ourselves down a wee bit in the boardroom before and after the game but all in all a normal Ilkeston away day.
After this game I realised that on the playing side we had potential but off the field we were quickly turning into a badly run pub team and changes needed to be made sooner rather than later.

Re: Season 2019-20 : Match of the month

I was at the Stamford game and we were playing really well until the half time whistle. Their blond midfield player was brilliant second half . Totally dominated our midfield. Best team in the league for me ...
Nice ground as well but like ours well out the way ...

League        Sheffield   (away)                          won   3-2
FA Trophy :  Bedworth United   (away)              lost   1-3
League    :   Frickley Athletic  (home)              draw   2-2

Match of the month :

Sat 5th October 2019
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Sheffield  2  Ilkeston Town  3
Ilkeston bounced back from Tuesday’s defeat against Wisbech with a remarkable win against Sheffield FC. It looked like it was going to be back to back defeats when they trailed 0-2 but the introduction of Mansfield Town loanee Tom Fielding halfway through the second half changed the game. Defences were on top in the first half and the only way a goal looked likely was from a set piece. Ilkeston’s best chances were a Chris Robertson header which was only just wide and a Rod Orlando-Young effort which was tipped over. Sheffield came closer with a shot that hit the bar but it stayed goalless until half time. On 49 minutes Ross Durrant made an incredible double save but Sheffield took the lead four minutes later through an own goal. Robertson was unlucky to divert a close range shot past Durrant. Sheffield doubled their lead ten minutes after that when Ryan McLean scored with a header. There seemed to be no way back for Ilkeston at this point. Tom Fielding was brought on for his debut and within a couple of minutes he’d lashed in a screamer. Ilkeston suddenly believed they could rescue a point and three minutes later it was 2-2 when Shaun Harrad scored. Both teams then pushed hard for a winner. On 74 minutes Durrant saved a thunderbolt from Michael Williams and on 80 minutes he denied Williams again as Sheffield tried to regain the lead they had lost. Ilkeston’s Reco Fyfe fired wide then there was a big penalty appeal by Sheffield when Mitchell Dunne went down in the area. The whistle went but it was to penalise Dunne for diving. Then on 90 minutes Ilkeston got the winner when Tom Marshall headed perfectly into the top corner. Sheffield desperately tried to come back but Ilkeston successfully negotiated the added time.

One of the things that keeps us watching football is that you can’t always predict what the result will be. We all know that you don’t always get what you deserve and occasionally you win when you should have lost. This was a match which Sheffield should have won but we stayed in the match and Tom Fielding came on and turned the game round for us. When Tom Marshall headed in the winner it was pure ecstasy. The fans returning to the Supporters Bus were buzzing and to top it off Mark Clifford came onto the bus to thank us for our support. You just can’t beat  the feeling you get from a last minute winner.

Match of the month

Lincoln United  2  Ilkeston Town  2
Mason Lee rescued a point for Ilkeston four minutes into added time after the Robins had been reduced to ten players. Alex Marshall put Ilkeston ahead on 14 minutes only for Lincoln to equalise a minute later. Ilkeston were generally in charge but Lincoln keeper Tom Nicholson was in outstanding form and made several crucial saves. Ilkeston’s inability to turn dominance into goals nearly cost them dearly but in a rousing finish they deservedly levelled. The first half was played at a furious pace. Marshall headed Ilkeston ahead but Jack Wightwick quickly equalised turning in a low left wing cross. Durrant saved well from Jonathan Williams while Massiah McDonald and then Jamie Walker were both denied by exceptional Nicholson saves before half time. Ilkeston started the second half strongly and Lincoln were pinned back with Nicholson making more vital saves, first from a Marshall header and then winning a one on one with McDonald. After several Ilkeston misses, Lincoln gradually weathered the storm. Then came the rather harsh red card for Alex Marshall on 70 minutes. Lincoln took advantage of their extra player and started to make a few chances. Ten minutes from time Wightwick raced through and scored a fine goal to give Lincoln the lead. Ilkeston were stung into a desperate search for an equaliser. Lincoln were defending well and Ilkeston’s ten men were being kept at bay. A chance fell for Shaun Harrad in added time but his shot was too high and it looked like Ilkeston’s last chance was gone. Then in the 94th minute the ball fell to Mason Lee who unleashed an unstoppable shot high into the net which Nicholson was unable to get to. Although it was a last gasp equaliser it was the least Ilkeston deserved but the Lincoln players didn’t take kindly to conceding and Jonathan Williams was shown a red card after the final whistle. For the many travelling Ilkeston supporters the draw must have felt like a win.

There was a bit of trouble after the game as some of the Lincoln players weren't happy. The Lincoln keeper was involved and I was told by a Lincoln steward that it wasn't the first time he had reacted that way after a game. It was a match we would have wanted to win but at least we got a point. Lincoln were later to hit a financial crisis which resulted in players leaving and the club sliding down the league table.

Re: Season 2019-20 : Match of the month

Agreed Sheffield should have buried us and again like you say we kept plugging away . Brilliant fight back to win the game . What really got me is how long their forward got away with diving everywhere . He did from the very start of the game and I was shouting at the ref to pull him up about it. Finally he did book the player late on ...... Why so long.
When Clffy came onto the coach it was to hear from him thanking us .

December 2019 matches played

League :              Sutton Coldfield  (home)       won  2-0
League :              Glossop North End  (away)   lost   2-3
League :              Cleethorpes Town   (away)    lost   1-2
League :              Carlton Town  (home)            lost   2-4

Joint Match of the month :

Sat 7th December 2019
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Ilkeston Town  2  Sutton Coldfield Town  0
Ilkeston ended their five game winless run with a hard fought victory over Sutton Coldfield Town. Dean Freeman gave Ilkeston a second half lead but they then had to defend as Sutton pressed hard for a leveller. Debutant Kieran Wells made sure of the win with a second Ilkeston goal four minutes from time. Ilkeston started brightly and Freeman was close with a header in the first minute. Ross Durrant was then forced into an excellent save as Sutton retaliated. Ilkeston forced a series of corners but without seriously testing Lewis Gwilliams the Sutton keeper. A shot by Daniel Racchi was deflected wide before Isai Marselia found the net for the visitors on 25 minutes only for it to be ruled out for offside. Five minutes later Gwilliams saved bravely at the feet of Massiah McDonald and the same player then had a shot blocked by a defender. Sutton’s Ben George combined with Reece Gibson and George’s shot needed a superb save by Durrant. There was another chance for Sutton before half time but Marselia fired over so the first half ended goalless with Sutton having had the better chances. The second half started with Ilkeston on top and they got the break through goal on 58 minutes when Freeman headed in at the far post. The goal sparked a determined reaction from Sutton and almost immediately Kieran Fenton had to  rescue Ilkeston with a saving tackle followed by Chris Robertson blocking another goal bound shot. Ilkeston were forced to withstand to some sustained pressure as Sutton looked for an equaliser but on 86 minutes Kieran Wells capped an excellent debut with a spectacular chip over Gwilliams to make the game safe. Durrant was called upon to save again in the dying moments but it was a welcome clean sheet for Ilkeston following two defeats in which nine goals were conceded.

This was Martin Carruthers first win and a debut for Kieran Wells after signing from Grantham. It turned out to be a better result than was thought at the time because Sutton Coldfield were on a remarkable run of form losing only 3 of 18 matches lifting them from 19th place in October to 7th place in February. Following this match Ilkeston lost their next three. We could claim to be  unlucky to lose at Glossop and Cleethorpes but then crashed to a disappointing 2-4 home defeat against Carlton on Boxing day.

Joint Match of the month :

Sun 22 December 2019
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Cleethorpes Town   2  Ilkeston Town  1
Ilkeston were unfortunate to be beaten by the odd goal when they met promotion hopefuls Cleethorpes Town in an exciting encounter. They were denied the point they deserved when Theo Richardson saved Alex Marshall’s penalty 15 minutes from time.
The game started at a hectic pace and Jamie Walker almost put Ilkeston ahead on 5 minutes when his shot was deflected behind. At the other end Kieran Fenton rescued Ilkeston with a last ditch tackle. On 15 minutes Reco Fyfe rolled the ball across the Cleethorpes goal line but no one was able to get on the end of it. Cleethorpes wide man Curtis Bateson then fired into the side netting after cutting inside. A glancing header by Walker was just wide and two minutes later Ross Durrant denied Jon Oglesby with a super save. The opening goal arrived on 28 minutes, a powerful header by Cleethorpes top scorer Scott Vernon from an Oglesby cross. Ilkeston fought back and Kieran Wells flashed a header just wide while Durrant was called upon again just before half time to keep the hosts lead to a single goal.
Ilkeston started the second half with renewed determination and were rewarded with a Ryan Campbell-Gordon equaliser on 53 minutes. Richardson saved bravely at the feet of Wells but Ilkeston were unlucky to find themselves behind again on 63 minutes. It came from a lightning counter attack and terrific finish by Bateson. Wells  was proving to be a handful for the Cleethorpes defenders and Ilkeston had a big penalty shout when he went down under challenge in the penalty area. The referee said no but two minutes later he did point to the spot. Unfortunately the penalty was missed and the Cleethorpes defenders denied Ilkeston any further opportunities.

Supporters who travelled will remember the long Sunday morning journey and then on arrival being told that the game was in doubt because the match officials were not happy with the pitch. The Cleethorpes ground staff were given 30 minutes to get rid of a few areas of surface water. Thankfully the game was eventually given the go-ahead. Cleethorpes were unbeaten on there own ground but on the heavy pitch we performed well and ran them close.
Just watched the highlights which are on Football Web Pages.  We should have won.

January 2020 matches played

League :              Belper Town  (away)            draw  1-1
League :              Stamford  (home)                  lost   2-4
League :              Spalding United   (away)       lost   0-1
League :              Sheffield   (home)                draw   1-1
League :              Wisbech Town (away)          won   2-0

Match of the month :

New Year’s Day, Wed 1st January 2020
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Belper Town 1  Ilkeston Town  1
Ilkeston ended a three match losing sequence with a battling draw at Belper. The Robins edged the first half but had to withstand a strong finish by the Nailers to earn a point. Alex Peterson put Belper ahead but Fabian Smith levelled four minutes later in front of a bumper 753 Bank Holiday attendance. The first effort on target was a firm Belper header which Ross Durrant held on to. After seven minutes Ilkeston had a penalty shout for handball but their appeals were turned down, then on 12 minutes they thought they had scored when Alex Marshall headed in but this time an offside flag was raised. Ilkeston had their best chance on 35 minutes when Kieran Wells beat the offside trap but with only the keeper to beat he miss hit his shot allowing Musselwhite to save easily. Wells had another chance just before half time when he broke through again but couldn’t finish. Belper’s best efforts were by Peterson who twice fired wide. The second half saw more determination from Belper and they took the lead with a strong header by Peterson on 54 minutes. This was quickly followed by Belper very nearly scoring a second but at the other end Ilkeston were a warded a free kick about ten yards in from the left corner flag. Fabian Smith’s cross avoided every one in the packed goalmouth and curled inside the far top corner of the net. Belper then came close to regaining the lead when powerful a shot took a slight deflection and whistled just wide of the left hand upright. Danny Gordon tried to catch out Durrant with a free kick but his attempt went the wrong side of the post. The final ten minutes saw Ilkeston hanging on as Belper pressed hard for a winner but on this occasion the Ilkeston defence stood firm and a draw was achieved.

Many Ilkeston fans made the short journey to 4th placed Belper who were chasing a playoff spot with games in hand. They were rewarded with a much better Ilkeston performance than of late and a point was a fair return.

League :   8th Feb     Sutton Coldfield   (away)              lost  1-3
League : 15th Feb     Market Drayton  (away)           Postponed
League : 22nd Feb    Leek Town   (home)                     won  2-0
League : 29th Feb     Newcastle Town (away)               won  2-1

Match of the month

Sat 22nd February 2020
Northern Premier League, South East Division
Ilkeston Town 2  Leek Town  0
Leek Town’s thirteen game winning run was brought to an end by a battling Ilkeston team who produced their best performance against the runaway league leaders. Kole Lambert’s two goals gave Ilkeston a richly deserved win and Leek were defeated for only the second time this season. Leek had the first opportunity when Robert Stevenson’s shot was deflected wide but Ilkeston were making light of the heavy going and took the lead after just seven minutes. Lambert latched onto a loose ball and fired home a rocket from the edge of the area giving keeper Daniel Roberts no chance. Leek hit back but Ilkeston were making chances too and were good value for their lead. Stevenson had another chance for Leek but his effort flew wide. Fernando Bell-Toxtle was close with a header from Reco Fyfe’s cross but Leek nearly equalised on 35 minutes but were denied by a  Ross Durrant super save. The league’s leading scorer Tim Grice was thwarted by Durrant at close range as Leek tried to get level before half time.Leek started the second half strongly and Durrant had to save an early header. Then Kieran Fenton did well to clear following Louis Keenan’s low cross as Ilkeston were put under pressure. But the Robins were defending well with Joe Maguire outstanding. Tom Marshall put Kieran Wells through but Ilkeston’s striker was denied by Roberts. Ilkeston were always looking dangerous when moving forward with Fyfe causing Leek plenty of problems and they were rewarded with a second goal on 70 minutes. A Fyfe volley could only be parried by Roberts and Lambert was there to blast home from close range. As Ilkeston celebrated, the Leek supporters let off a smoke bomb behind Durrant’s goal which caused a disturbance and stewards had to move in and calm things down. Back on the pitch Leek were trying their best to find a way back but were not able to penetrate a determined Ilkeston rearguard. On 88 minutes Durrant pulled off another brilliant save and Leek must have known it wasn’t going to be their day. In the final moments Maguire again showed great composure and resilience as Ilkeston held out for a famous win.

It is very rare that a team has five Saturday fixtures in February but this year it happened. It can only happen when the 1st of February falls on a Saturday in a leap year.  Prior to the game Ilkeston had appointed Wayne Hallcro to assist Martin Carruthers. This has to be regarded as Ilkeston’s best performance of the season as prior to kick off, not many would have expected anything other than a heavy defeat. League leaders, Leek had only lost one of their 25 matches to date. Okay, we had a bit of luck and Ross Durrant kept us in it but we also played well. What a feeling at full time!  For those supporters that went to Leek it was sweet justice for what happened there.

Re: Season 2019-20 : Match of the month

March 2020 matches played

League :  Market Drayton Town    (away)        won  1-0
League :  Loughborough Dynamo  (away  )    lost   1-3

The final two matches before the Coronavirus pandemic ended the season prematurely.

Sat 7th March 2020Northern Premier League, South East Division
Market Drayton Town  0  Ilkeston Town  1
A goal by Kieran Wells a minute before half time was enough for Ilkeston to secure a third consecutive win. Ilkeston totally dominated the first half with Wells twice hitting the frame of the goal but Market Drayton almost held out. The second half with the slope and wind advantage saw the hosts do much better but Ilkeston finished worthy winners.Wells was always Ilkeston’s danger man from crosses into the box but Drayton keeper Sam Agius was proving difficult to beat. A Wells header hit the crossbar on 18 minutes then 6 minutes later he rattled the bar again. Agius then saved low down from Kole Lambert. Next, Joe Maguire had a header cleared off the line before Drayton skipper Connor Russo tested Ross Durrant at the other end. Tom Marshall had Agius back-pedalling after seeing him off his line. Drayton had a rare chance on 38 minutes but Zac Hill miscued. Just when it seemed that the first half would be goalless Billy Bennett’s cross was headed firmly in at the back post by Wells. The start of the second half saw Drayton have their best spell and Durrant had to make a fine save to preserve Ilkeston’s lead. Lambert headed a Fabian Smith cross wide as Ilkeston regained control but with only a fragile one goal lead Drayton stayed in the game. Lambert had a shot blocked but then Drayton got a free kick in a dangerous position which was deflected for a corner. With 5 minutes left Wells was so close to a second goal from a tight angle but his effort rolled just wide. A minute after that Ilkeston had a massive penalty shout when Reco Fyfe looked to be brought down well inside the area as he was about to shoot. It looked a certain penalty but the official in charge thought otherwise. Before the end Drayton had a final free kick opportunity but Ilkeston cleared and the points were secure.

No match can be taken for granted and this was proved when visiting struggling Market Drayton.  The pitch had a fair slope on it and the home players looked really young. The Drayton officials told  us that they were moving to another ground next season and were desperate not to be relegated. Ilkeston were always the better side but a one goal lead always leaves you feeling vulnerable. The 1-0 victory  made it three wins on the bounce and at last it felt like we had turned a corner.    Sat 14th March 2020

Northern Premier League, South East Division
Loughborough Dynamo  3  Ilkeston Town  1
Ilkeston’s three game winning run was ended by two late goals after Fernando Bell-Toxtle had cancelled out Loughborough’s first half lead. The first period belonged to the hosts but a better second half performance by Ilkeston promised to provide at least a point but the introduction of ex Ilkeston player Kevin De Silva Bastos turned the game in Dynamo’s favour.Loughborough started strongly and Ross Durrant had to save well from Karl Demidh. Ilkeston were under the cosh and on 11 minutes Alex Steadman opened the scoring for Dynamo. It took Ilkeston 30 minutes to create their first proper chance. Dynamo keeper Jason Alexander did really well to keep out a decent Kieran Wells effort with a diving save after good work by Reco Fyfe. Ilkeston had been guilty of failing to have a go and Loughborough were well worth their 1-0 interval lead. Ilkeston started the second half with much more determination. A Wells header was wide and a Joe Maguire shot hit the post before Fernando Toxtle-Bell’s superb equaliser. His shot on 72 minutes was right into the top left hand corner of the net giving Alexander no chance of saving. At this point Ilkeston had the edge and came very close to taking the lead. Kole Lambert was tripped near the edge of the penalty area. Kieran Fenton’s free kick hit the wall and came to Fyfe who’s powerful volley was brilliantly saved by Alexander. Lambert latched onto the rebound and smashed it just wide. But fortunes were about to change following Bastos’s introduction on 78 minutes. It was the tricky winger who created Dynamo’s second goal by skilfully providing the cross from which Manuchim Oke-William scored on 84 minutes. Then before Ilkeston had time to recover, Loughborough scored again. Oke-William was this time the provider after he intercepted a pass and made ground before feeding Demidh who slotted in the killer goal.

Loughborough deserved their win in the end. Ironically Ilkeston’s best spell came after Fernando’s equaliser when we were caught out by counter attacks late in the game. Unfortunately there were a couple of alleged incidents involving supporters during the match which were reported to the match officials.
