Sat 12 Sep : FA CUP : Ilkeston v Shepshed - Live Updates

It's the first competitive game of the season and a chance to start an FA Cup run against our friends from Shepshed. Ilkeston's pre-season friendlies haven't exactly gone to plan so let's hope the players can hit the form they're capable of and produce the right result. Remember it's penalties if the scores are level.

30 minutes kick off.  It's warm and sunny at the NMG. There's still plenty of room if you are thinking of coming down.

Close shave for Ilkeston as Morris drives the ball across goal and its deflected for a Shepshed corner. Then Brown-Hill header just wide at the other end as Ilkeston counter. Good cross from Wilson.  Chance for Goodson but keeper saves.          0-0     7 minutes

Wilson does well to stop Mundell. Reid finds Goodson and Goodson scores an excellent goal squeezing it past the outrushing keeper -  really good finish.      2-0        27 minutes

Durrant is knocked out trying to fist out a cross.  No foul but a nasty fall leaves him needing attention. He gets up but goes down again. He's obviously groggy.             2-0        36 minutes

Now Shepshed keeper goes down under pressure and needs treatment.  Another lengthy delay.  He's OK. Bennett heads away a shot which nearly knocks him out but he shakes his head and carries on.

Re: Sat 12 Sep : FA CUP : Ilkeston v Shepshed - Live Updates

Some superb performances today. After some disappointing pre-season friendlies, we really clicked today with a good all round team performance which was well received by the fans. Good to see the well deserved ovation at the end as the players left the field:

Ross Durrant - Reliable and a great shot stopper. Brilliant save after his injury. Whymark decided to test him with a terrific free kick but Ross made a fantastic save.
Joe Wilson - Brilliant performance and many people's choice for man of the match.
Billy Bennett - What a player! So solid, fearless and always available. I remember him getting his head onto a Shepshed shot that would have knocked me out. He just shook his head and carried on.
Jack Thomas - This was the first time I had seen him. Looks a great addition.
Joe Maguire - Some great defensive work today breaking up Shepshed attacks. Excellent header of the ball.
Kieran Fenton - Given the captain's armband and looking more confident and assured this season with better players around him.
Zak Goodson - Terrific performance today and looks like being a fan's favourite. Skillfull, fast and a good finisher.  I reckon he could score 20 goals this season.
Ollie Brown-Hill - Truly gifted player. Skips past players and earned the second penalty. Expect him to score goals too.
Alex Troke - Another excellent signing.  Led the line well. Always in the game and looking to score.
Nat Watson - Another highly rated player. Great mobility and balance. He's strong and good on the ball and I expect him to become a favourite once he starts hitting the net.
James Reid - My personal favourite player. When Reid plays well, the team plays well. Majestic and influential, he controlled the game with his skill and passing.

Re: Sat 12 Sep : FA CUP : Ilkeston v Shepshed - Live Updates

Matchman's Match Report

Saturday 12th September 2020  :  FA Cup Preliminary Round
Ilkeston Town  3  Shepshed Dynamo  0
Two outstanding finishes from Zak Goodson and a penalty from Alex Troke enabled Ilkeston to safely progress to the next round of FA Cup. Shepshed provided a good test as both sides served up an entertaining afternoon of attacking football. The first five minutes saw both teams going close. Dynamo had the first opportunity when Morris, their outstanding attacking player, drove the ball fiercely across goal with a deflection taking it just wide. Ilkeston retaliated and a Brown-Hill header at the other end was just off target. The Shepshed keeper then saved well from Goodson before Ilkeston were awarded a penalty. A pass from Watson took Bennett into the Shepshed area before he was brought down. Troke converted from the spot to give Ilkeston a 10th minute lead. Morris had an opportunity for Shepshed but volleyed over. On 27 minutes Goodson doubled Ilkeston’s lead after controlling Reid’s precision pass and firing past the outrushing keeper. Ilkeston keeper Durrant was hurt as he fell awkwardly when punching clear and needed lengthy treatment. Soon afterwards, Shepshed’s Karl Whymark sensing Durrant may not be fully recovered tested him with a ferocious free kick but Durrant was equal to it. In the final five minutes before half time Ilkeston twice went close. Just before the whistle Shepshed’s keeper Matty White was injured and he was replaced at the start of the second half by outfield player Lewis White. On 54 minutes Joe Wilson made a brilliant forward run but was denied by a good tackle. Brown-Hill was then inches wide before Troke and Goodson both had shots saved. Ilkeston scored a superb third on 69 minutes. Goodson played a one two with Troke before side footing first time into the bottom left corner. Goodson then had a chance to complete a hat-trick on 81 minutes. Brown-Hill skipped past a defender in the area before being unceremoniously brought down but Goodson’s spot kick was well saved by the substitute keeper. A Reid shot skimmed the crossbar before full time.

Match report from the Club website :

MATCH REPORT | Ilkeston Town 3-0 Shepshed Dynamo | FA CUP

Ilkeston Town eased into the first qualifying round with a comfortable win over Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday.
The Robins began well and after Zak Goodson had seen an early effort saved, they went in front when Alex Troke scored from the penalty spot following a foul on Billy Bennett on ten minutes.
Troke had a low shot gathered by keeper Matty White soon afterwards, before the lead was doubled on 27 minutes when James Reid’s fine through ball found Goodson and he ran on to finish well.
Bennett then saw an effort cleared off the line for the hosts before the break.
The second-half saw Ilkeston continue to dominate, Troke having an effort well saved by sub keeper Lewis White, before the third goal arrived on 71 minutes as good interplay between Troke and Goodson ended with the latter finishing well to secure the Robins’ passage through.
FULL-TIME: Ilkeston Town 3-0 Shepshed Dynamo
