Cleethorpes v Ilkeston: Sat 19 Sep. Live Updates

We’ve waited so long for the start of the 2020/21 season and at last it’s here. Our opening game at Cleethorpes is a tough one as is our second match against Stamford. In my opinion 2 or 3 points from the two games would be good. 4 points would be fantastic .
If you can’t travel to Cleethorpes you are welcome to follow the live updates here on Whiteball.

Re: Cleethorpes v Ilkeston: Sat 19 Sep. Live Updates

On Ilkeston Town Supporters Community Page, everyone except Paul Miller is predicting an Ilkeston win. That's pretty optimistic rather than reaistic in my opinion.
One never knows what may happen in a football match. An injury or a refereeing decision can change the outcome. Remember Leek away last season. Just hope our players are up for it and all of our travelling fans enjoy the game, stay safe and come home happy.
Well done Zane for the travel arrangements.  Hope everything runs smoothly after all the work and preparations.

Clee no. 11 volleys wide. Thomas cross is just too long.  Brown-hill shot is so close as it whistles past the left upright. Brown-hill ends up in the net trying to get on the end of Reid's cross.          1-0           29 minutes

It's been an even first half with both teams having spells on top. Cleethorpes are strong on both wings but Ilkeston are defending well, especially Maguire.

Clee retaliate but shot goes harmlessly wide.  Great defending by Thomas.  Cleethorpes are pressing. Ilkeston break and have a big penalty appeal as Brown-Hill is taken out by keeper. Ref waves appeals away.

Re: Cleethorpes v Ilkeston: Sat 19 Sep. Live Updates

Saturday 19th September 2020  :  Northern Premier League - South East Division
Cleethorpes Town  2  Ilkeston Town  3
Ilkeston had the support of two coach loads of fans when they made the seaside trip to Cleethorpes for their opening league match which resulted in an exciting 3-2 win. Goals by Nat Watson, Alex Troke and ZakGoodson were enough to clinch victory against highly rated Cleethorpes Town.
The game started at a fast pace with Cleethorpes making the early running. A fine run by Jon Oglesby produced the first big chance but it was Ilkeston who took the lead with Ollie Brown-Hill creating the opportunity which Watson finished off expertly on 14 minutes. The goal lifted Ilkeston and a screamer from Jack Thomas was brilliantly tipped over. Brown-Hill was next to go close with a shot just wide. Cleethorpes nearly equalised when Durrant was fortunately placed to stop a close range deflection during a dominant Cleethorpes spell before half time.
The second half started disastrously for Ilkeston when they conceded a leveller by Harry Middleton in the first minute following a corner that was not cleared. A couple of minutes later Cleethorpes nearly scored again but Ilkeston hit back with a James Reid shot which tested keeper Theo Richardson. It was somewhat against the flow that Ilkeston regained the lead. Goodson did well to find Troke who made room to score from inside the area. There could have been a penalty for Ilkeston when Brown-Hill appeared to be brought down by the Cleethorpes keeper but their confident appeals were waved away. Goodson then fired home a cracker but was denied by the offside flag. The third goal finally came following a superb Reid pass that put Goodson away and the Ilkeston marksman made no mistake beating the outrushing keeper. Cleethorpes made frantic efforts to try and rescue the game but Ilkeston defended well. Out of the blue the hosts were awarded a penalty in added time from which Scott Vernon scored but it was too late to affect the outcome.

Cleethorpes Match report

CLEETHORPES TOWN 2 ILKESTON TOWN 3    BY DAVID SIMPSON

OPENING DAY LEAGUE DEFEAT FOR THE OWLS!

Ilkeston Town claimed a narrow 3-2 victory in the first Pitching In Northern Premier League fixture of the campaign on Saturday afternoon at a sun-kissed Myenergi Stadium. Harry Middleton and Scott Vernon were on-target for the Owls. There were 3 changes from the starting XI from last weekend’s FA Cup defeat. Josh Venney, Alex Flett & Harry Middleton came in at the expense of Liam Dickens, Conor Marshall & Ross Hannah. The side lined-up as follows:Goal: Theo Richardson
Defence: Sam Topliss, Paul Walker, Michael Jacklin, Caine Winfarrah
Midfield: Curtis Bateson, Alex Flett, Josh Venney, Harry Middleton, Jon Oglesby
Attack: Scott Vernon (c)Subs: Heath Richardson (gk), Tim Lowe, Ross Hannah, Rieves Boocock, Liam Dickens

It was a delightful late Summer’s day as the action got underway before a capacity crowd of 400. The opening phase was pretty even, before the Robins seized the initiative in the 14th minute. Goodson found Nathan Watson, who shot into the corner of the net. After this setback, Clee tried to get into their rhythm but Ilkeston continued to look the more fluent at this stage of the contest. Keeper Richardson was at his athletic best to tip away a fierce dipping 25-yarder by Thomas.  The Owls did have their moments as well though, with Bateson shooting a yard or so wide and also having an appeal for a spot-kick waved away by the referee. Then, visiting stopper Durrant slightly fumbled and he would have been relieved to see the resulting half-chance sail over the bar.
HT Cleethorpes Town 0 Ilkeston Town 1 (Watson 14)
Clee emerged from the dressing room with much more fire in their collective bellies and drew level within 90 seconds. A clever short corner was stroked home from the edge of the area, via the inside of the upright, by Harry Middleton. This was the cue for the Owls to enjoy their best period, as a turnaround was threatened. Nevertheless, Ilkeston were in no mood to buckle and, following a superb one-handed stop by Richardson, they regained the advantage shortly before the hour. Goodson was again the provider and Alex Troke made no mistake. Ilkeston had a goal disallowed for offside but eased into the comfort zone with 72 minutes elapsed. Zak Goodson, who had caught the eye all day, burst clear and calmly rolled the ball beyond Richardson, to the delight of the large following from Derbyshire. The Owls now faced an uphill struggle to salvage a result but, to their credit, continued to battle away. This spirit was rewarded in the 2nd minute of added time, as Scott Vernon thumped home a penalty, following a clumsy tackle. With the clock still ticking, the home faithful sensed the possibility of an unlikely draw. However, Ilkeston saw out the remaining seconds to inflict a first-day defeat on the Owls for the first time in 5 years.
FT Cleethorpes Town 2 (Middleton 47, Vernon pen 90+2) Ilkeston Town 3 (Watson 14, Troke 58, Goodson 73) Attendance: 400
