Next Up: FACup 2nd Q Round :Sat 3rd Oct : Ilkeston Town v Hanley Town

This Saturday It's FA Cup time. We've beaten Shepshed and Coventry Sphinx so far and now we take on Hanley Town. Prize money for the winners of this tie is £3375 so there's a decent financial incentive to win.
Whilst promotion is the number one objective, a cup run breeds confidence which in turn helps to achieve the main goal.  There are no replays or extra time so it's straight  to penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

Re: Next Up: FACup 2nd Q Round :Sat 3rd Oct : Ilkeston Town v Hanley Town

If we win against Hanley Town, the next round is on Tuesday 13th October.
On that date we are due to play Leek Town at home so the Leek match will be postponed until a later date as the FA Cup game takes precedence..

Early touch for Durrant. Zak gets away but defender recovers to stop him. Goodson shot hits a defender. Good save by Hanley keeper from Goodson.  Chance for Sanders with Durrant out of position but his shot is wayward.           0-0      5 minutes

Brown shoots from distance and it's over the bar, Sanders tests Durrant with a 30 yarder and Durrant saves.  Hanley are having a go when the opportunities arise. Free kick to Hanley at the corner of the area  Good chance. Ball skids though to Durrant.  Hanley doing much better now.         0-0      !5 minutes

Brown-Hill shot is just wide of far post.  It's half time and Ilkeston are 2-1 ahead but it's been a fair effort by Hanley who get applauded off by their supporters.

Great play by Watson as Ilkeston press. Again good by Watson but he can't get his shot away. Keeper just beats Brown-Hill to a forward ball. Ilkeston on top at the moment.            2-1        60 minutes

Dill finishes up in the net but the keeper has the ball. Strong finish by Ilkeston as Hanley know it's all over. It may all have been different had Fuller converted the penalty at 2-1. Excellent effort by Hanley.

Result  Ilkeston  4  Hanley  1

Re: Next Up: FACup 2nd Q Round :Sat 3rd Oct : Ilkeston Town v Hanley Town

Match Report :

Saturday 3rd October  :  FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
Ilkeston Town  4  Hanley Town  1
Hanley Town’s brave FA Cup run came to an end at the New Manor Ground in an action packed encounter. The underdogs from Stoke on Trent were enjoying plenty of vociferous support. Hanley looked vulnerable early on but grew in confidence as the game progressed. Goodson’s effort was well saved by visiting keeper Ben Chapman and Tim Sanders tested Ross Durrant before Hanley’s opener on 21 minutes which was greeted with massive delight by the travelling fans. Durrant got a hand on Nial Cope’s shot but there was enough power to take it into the net. Ilkeston hit back with an equaliser from Goodson on 35 minutes when he raced through and fired past Chapman. Two minutes later they were ahead after a belter from Nat Watson. Brown-Hill fired narrowly wide just before half time and the Robins ended the half with a slender one goal lead.
On 52 minutes a Watson shot produced a good save from Chapman. Then on 68 minutes came the moment that the Hanley fans were waiting for, the introduction of Ricardo Fuller. Within minutes of coming on, the former international had won a penalty. The expectation was immense and the headlines were being written. Unfortunately for Hanley, Fuller’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by Durrant. It wasn’t a bad penalty. It was in the corner but Durrant somehow got to it and kept it out. The Hanley fans couldn’t believe it. On 76 minutes Ilkeston had a penalty shout themselves when Goodson went down in the area under challenge but the official in charge disagreed and booked Goodson for diving. With the tie finely balanced at 2-1, the next goal was vital and it was Ilkeston who got it through Goodson on 82 minutes after good build up play by Brown-Hill and Alex Troke. Hanley didn’t give up but three minutes from time Ilkeston were awarded penalty and Troke converted it to complete the scoring.

Re: Next Up: FACup 2nd Q Round :Sat 3rd Oct : Ilkeston Town v Hanley Town

The early rounds of the FA Cup tend to be regionalised to avoid excessive travelling, so good chance of being drawn against Matlock, Alfreton or Mickleover in the next round. Or maybe Tamworth.

Re: Next Up: FACup 2nd Q Round :Sat 3rd Oct : Ilkeston Town v Hanley Town

Mark Duffy's match report

Ilkeston win FA Cup thriller to see off Hanley
Ilkeston Town emerged victorious from a tough FA Cup second qualifying round test on Saturday as they overcame NWCL side Hanley Town 4-1 at the New Manor Ground. The scoreline didn't tell the full story, with Hanley having led the game at one point and then missing a penalty in the second-half that would have made it 2-2 had it found the net, but the Robins ultimately deserved their victory and a place in the third qualifying round. The result also maintained Ilkeston's unbeaten run so far in a season that continues to promise plenty. Zak Goodson saw an early effort parried by Hanley keeper Ben Chapman early on as the Robins started strongly, Alex Troke then heading wide from Charlie Marzano’s cross. At the other end, Tim Sanders’ long ranger was straight at Ross Durrant ten minutes in, but it was with their next attack that Hanley took the lead on 21. The ball fell to Niall Cope just outside the penalty area and his low shot skidded off the surface, taking a deflection en route that did Durrant no favours before rolling into the net. Kieran Brown headed narrowly wide for Hanley on the half-hour mark as they continued to take control of the game, but it was Ilkeston who would peg them back with the equaliser on 34 minutes. Goodson was sent clear down the inside right channel and was able to run on and finish well. Three minutes later Ilkeston led, as Goodson held off a challenge and squared to Nat Watson just outside the penalty area and his well-placed shot found the corner of the net. Ollie Brown-Hill’s low shot was pushed wide by Chapman on the stroke of half-time, but the Robins went into the break in front. Ilkeston had the first opening of the second-half as Watson’s low drive was beaten away by the Hanley keeper.    Chances then dried up despite Ilkeston dominating proceedings, until Hanley nearly levelled on 68 minutes as sub Daniel Needham’s shot beat Durrant but not Brown-Hill on the line. Ilkeston’s Joe Maguire then also saw an effort cleared off the line following a corner, before Hanley had a golden chance to level from the penalty spot. Newly-arrived sub Ricardo Fuller was brought to ground by Kieran Fenton, but the veteran striker then saw his penalty saved superbly low down to his left by Durrant. That proved crucial, as with eight minutes to go Ilkeston got their third goal when great work from Brown-Hill down the left saw him pull the ball back to Goodson who had time to control and finish well. The Robins weren’t done there, as sub Mason Lee was then brought down on his way into the penalty area by Kyle Stubbs and Alex Troke stepped up to stroke home the penalty and round off the win - Cope shown a red card for dissent before the kick was taken to compound Hanley's misery.

Ilkeston: Durrant, Marzano, Tait, Thomas, Maguire, Fenton, Goodson, Brown-Hill, Troke (Dill 90), Watson (Lee 75), Reid (Bartram 85)Not used: Stainsby, Render, Bryant, Cullingworth
Hanley: Chapman, Faulkner, Sheldon (Anthony 46), Beaumont, Stubbs, Sanders, Barton (Needham 61), Okome, Brown (Fuller 69), Cope, Ashton. Not used: Feeney, Thompson, Langridge, Lawrence

Following Hanley Chairman's interview with Moorland's Radio Sport after the match, this was Paul's reply

You want to THANK your fans? Really? They were an absolute disgrace! I would love to see the referee’s report on this one. From dickheads on the pitch, missiles thrown, and threatening behaviour to anyone that gave them even so much as a sideways glance. And you’re proud are you?

In Liam's absence I
attended the after match review with referee Ben Cooke and the other two officials.
He told me that he would be detailing various incidents in his report to the FA Report including

Pitch invasion
Cans thrown
Beer thrown

He also assured me that none of the crowd misdemeanours involved Ilkeston supporters.
