Ilkeston Town 1 Matlock Town 1
Ilkeston’s playoff hopes were ended when they were held to a draw by relegated Matlock. Despite dominating the game they couldn’t find a winner against a Matlock team that was reduced to ten players in the second half. Matlock rode their luck in the final stages and Ilkeston were so close to a winner when Jamie Walker rattled the crossbar.
Ilkeston had the ball in net after only two minutes when Jordan Stevens headed in L’Varn Brandy’s cross but the offside fag was raised. Matlock retaliated and Matt Yates had to race out to beat Cameron Wilson to a through ball but on 8 minutes Ilkeston went ahead. Matlock keeper Ellis Litherland did well to divert a dangerous cross but it fell to Walker on the left edge of the area who picked his spot low into the far corner the net. Little was seen of the Matlock attack until Montel Gibson got on the end of a cross causing Yates to make a save. Daniel was next to have a go for Ilkeston and Litherland did well to parry his powerful blast. Sam Essien was outstanding in midfield for the Robins but despite Ilkeston’s dominance they only led by a single goal at the break.
The lead was cancelled immediately after the restart when a mix up presented Gibson with a gift equaliser. Ilkeston huffed and puffed but to the frustration of the home support, chances were few. Brandy who had enjoyed plenty of success on the right flank was fouled once too often resulting in Jack Stobbs being dismissed. But being reduced to ten players galvanised Matlock’s resolve. Sam Parker was just wide with a first time volley. There was then a chance for Stevens but his effort flew wide. A fine cross from Stevens was met by Kirby-Moore’s glancing header but he couldn’t get enough on it to direct it goalwards. Walker beat two players after cutting inside but his cross was blocked. Gibson had a chance from a Matlock counter attack but fired wide. Daniel had a go from close range for Ilkeston but saw his effort fly over the bar then in the dying embers, Walker was as close as you can be when his ferocious shot shook the Matlock crossbar.
