Alnwick Town v Ponteland United Sat 5th Aug Northern Football Alliance

Alnwick Town start their new season with a game at home to Ponteland United. Manager Richard Latimer has retained most of last seasons squad and has made a few noteworthy additions. The club is playing down reports that they are favourites to win the league this season after a strong finish last season where they only lost one game from December 10th onwards. Alnwick have a busy schedule in August having to total of seven games to play. In fact by early September they will have played a third of their league fixtures for the season. The club have spent a lot of the summer refurbishing St James Park and include a new stand behind the goal at the railway end which replaces the shelter destroyed by Storm Arwen. The 472 crew are expected to be present in large numbers with their brand of wit and vocal support.

Alnwick go 1-0 down despite dominating the game after a defensive mix up gives Ponteland their first chance of the game!

FULL TIME
Alnwick Town 2
Ponteland United 3

A game which Alnwick dominated but could not convert this into clear cut chances. A number of uncharacteristic defensive lapses did not help. First time I have seen Alnwick get beaten!

Re: Alnwick Town v Ponteland United Sat 5th Aug Northern Football Alliance

This was a game everyone expected Alnwick to win after their impressive end of season form last season. However Ponteland United are a decent side nd are no pushovers. Alnwick dominated the game with their patient passing game but failed to create enough clear cut chances. When Ponteland cleared a header off the line just before it was clear that Alnwick would have to up their game in the second half. They did just that pinning Ponteland back in their own penalty area and it seemed only matter of time before Alnwick would take the lead. However against the run and as a result a defensive mix up Pontelnd took the lead. Alnwick again put pressure and eventually equalised and then went on to take the lead. The relief of the 472 crew was only to last a few seconds before Pontelnd equalised with the goal of the game. Alnwick now started to look a bit weary and ragged and it was no surprise when another defensive mistake gave Ponteland the winner with only a few minutes remaining.
