Re: Alnwick Town v AFC Newbiggin 20.01.24 Team Valley Carpets Cup

Sometimes you just wish that the game could have been called off due to a waterlogged pitch. However if you have a 4G surface there are no get out clauses. Alnwick Town went into this game as favourites but missing a few key players. Things looked OK up until five minutes before the break when the best defence in the league decided to self implode with uncharacteristic mistakes leading to a two goal deficit when it could have been three. After the break any notions that at 2-0 it’s not over we’re dispelled by AFC Newbiggin going 4-0 up. A consolation goal and another for the visitors made it 5-1. It was a fully deserved victory for AFC Newbiggin and a learning experience for Alnwick. Manager Latimer was very honest in his assessment of Alnwick’s performance and an appreciation that perhaps that they may have to work harder if they want it win the league. Alnwick have applied for promotion to the Northern League and this result and issues with St James Park pitch will be a reality check! I firmly believe that the team and the club are good enough for the Northern League but it cannot be taken for granted!
