Stamford AFC host Ilkeston Town in their first match of the Northern Premier League Midlands Division campaign
Stamford manager Graham Drury is hoping the fans will turn out in force for his side's opening match of the new Northern Premier League campaign on Saturday.
The Daniels host Ilkeston Town in their Midlands Division opener at the Zeeco Stadium (kick-off 3pm).
It will be Stamford's first home league game since the end of October after last season's campaign was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And Drury is calling for a strong show of home support to get behind his team against a visiting Robins side who are expected to again challenge for honours and will be backed by a large travelling contingent from Derbyshire.
Drury said: "It's our first league game with fans back in the ground and hopefully we'll get the Stamford faithful behind us to make a decent crowd. "Hopefully they will come out in their numbers after the pandemic because they have all been missing football.
"Ilkeston travel in numbers as well so we need to match it because it should be a good sing-song battle for the fans. "It will be a really enjoyable afternoon for the people of Stamford to come out and watch.
"We have got to look to try and win the game and get off to a good start against what will be a short, sharp footballing side.”
Ilkeston - who are expected to include former Stamford player Ollie Brown-Hill in their squad - are just one of eight teams to remain from the sides that Stamford faced last season in the newly-created Midlands Division.
And Drury feels his promotion-chasing side will face a series of tougher tests this term in what looks to be a wide open race for promotion. He added: "I hope that we can perform to the standards that we did in the past two seasons because the league is certainly tougher this year. "Whoever finishes in that top five will have had an outstanding season and the ones that win it will have done fantastic, but I really can't name the top five or the bottom five this year.
"You can just talk about the whole league and I don't want to miss anyone out because it's that strong."It's going to be really tough battle every week and you could even lose seven games this season and still win it if you don't draw too many.
"It's going to be that kind of season and it is good and entertaining when you see results that you don't expect.
"I really can't call it. I just know that we need to be at it and we want to get off to a good start so we're not playing catch-up.
"We will take it one game at a time like the old cliche says and hopefully we can produce a good performance on Saturday.
"Striker James Hicks will return to the Stamford squad after missing last weekend's FA Cup win at GNG Oadby while club captain Sean Wright completes the final game of his suspension held over from last season.
Stamford are then back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Soham Town Rangers.

Interesting team selection! Could be a 442 or a 433 formation. Stamford have some familiar names that made me shudder last time we played them. Nothing to lose for the lads today. Contain them for the first twenty minutes or so then hit them with the sucker punch or two and defend for your life till you have secured three points! SIMPLE Come on Ilson!!

Troke's brilliant cross on the turn found Bennett who fired home. Stamford are stung into lfe. Goodson gets into area and shoots but keeper saves. Half tome and Ilkeston lead by 1-0.
