Match Report :
Sat 14th August 2021 Northern Premier League - Midlands Division
AFC Stamford 1 Ilkeston Town 3
Ilkeston’s season got off to the best possible start with a win at the Zeeco Stadium, against pre-season promotion favourites, AFC Stamford. There were a few raised eyebrows when Martin Carruthers’ team was announced but his plan worked to perfection. The gusty wind caused both teams problems but Ilkeston soaked up the early Stamford pressure and stole the lead just before half time. Before that Stamford had edged possession but they failed to penetrate Ilkeston’s organised defence. Meanwhile, Ilkeston were causing Stamford problems on the counter attack and Zak Goodson was closest to opening the scoring when his effort was saved by Wallis. The breakthrough goal on 43 minutes was hammered in by Billy Bennett following Alex Troke’s instant turn and cross. Stamford responded immediately but Ilkeston nearly added a second through Goodson and went in at the break a goal to the good. Stamford started the second half strongly but, as in the first half, were unable to create real opportunities. They were stunned by a second Ilkeston goal on 68 minutes with Bennett again the scorer and Troke again the provider. Stamford stormed back with a Siddons header going agonisingly close. Kieran Fenton made a goal line clearance and Durrant saved twice as Stamford tried hard to retrieve the situation. But with eight minutes left Ilkeston scored again to make the game safe. A superb pass by Charlie Wakefield put Troke through on goal and he finished in spectacular fashion to the delight of all connected with Ilkeston. In the dying moments Jon Challinor pulled one back for Stamford but it was way too late and the day belonged to Ilkeston after a classic away performance.

When I saw the starting 11 I wasn’t sure how we’d line up. 4 decent lads not even stripped and you have to feel for them
But that’s football and the consequences of having a strong squad. Ahead of the game I’d have taken a point. Stamford were obviously concerned about us and had left the grass long to try to negate our style. A compliment I suppose
We never looked in any real trouble though. They were direct with lots of long throws and we rode our luck at times and the luck finally ran out at the death with a double deflection finding it’s way in. But we’d had a couple off the line prior to that so it’s swings & roundabouts
Stamford were unlucky with skipper Rob Morgan limping off after 20 too and you could say the gods smiled on us overall but the best side won
Their strength is their wide men and Tait & Marzano keep them quiet with great displays. Marzano MOM for me but there were no weak performances in a great team effort
Team selection fully vindicated too
We have now set the standard. It cannot drop on Tuesday or Saturdays efforts will be in vain
Overall a very good start. But it’s only one game so feet on the ground eh
Fans played their part as ever too and great gesture from the club supplying free travel

What a professional and disciplined performance by the team yesterday. The team that Martin Carruthers picked was not what I was expecting but they stuck to the plan and were rewarded.
Had they lost, Carruthers would have been severely criticised but his brave team selection and tactics worked. The three players I personally didn’t expect to play, Spence, Marzano and Tait all had excellent games. It was a terrific team effort to pull off a win which most supporters will admit, they were not really expecting. We never allowed Stamford to get going and restricted their opportunities. A Stamford official admitted after the game that Ilkeston were too good for them on the day and deserved to win.
1 Durrant - made some important saves when it mattered
2 Bennett - what a player he’s become and his two goals make him man of the match
3 Spence - justified his selection with excellent movement and passing
4 Wakefield - excellent in midfield and superb quick thinking to set up Troke goal
5 Maguire - class player, solid and reliable in defence as ever
6 Fenton - good defending and player of the ball forward.
7 Marzano - got stuck in and looked strong and comfortable
8 Goodson - willing to run at defenders and have a go
9 Campbell - in my opinion, absolutely outstanding up front, did everything expected of him, holding the ball until other players arrived.
10 Troke - another class performance, scored one made made the other two.
11 Tait - comfortable on the ball in both defence and attack. Outstanding prospect who gets better every game.
I expect some of the players left out of the squad were not happy but Carruthers picked the team he thought was best to play against Stamford. When we play against Sporting Khalsa on Tuesday night I think you will see changes. It will be horses for courses with all of the squad being used according to who our opponents are.
I heard a few complaints about the referee but I thought he did well. He was a bit officious but he was always in control of what could have been a difficult game for him.
I’ll be interested to hear the thoughts of others.

Yes, it would be interesting to hear the views of others. We only hear the views from the same 5 or 6 people all the time.
Never mind the context, that was a strong performance against a good side. I did suggest that the manager might use the youngsters at full-back to negate the pace of the Stamford wingers, and use Billy Bennett in a more advanced role. No surprise that he stuck with Fenton (who had a very good game to be fair) and Campbell. The surprise for me was using Spence and not Verma. That was a brave call. But isn’t it refreshing, that our manager, in such a big game, is prepared to put his faith in 3 of our promising youngsters?
I think there were strong performances all over the park. Everybody put a real shift in. Everybody committed to the cause. Marzano struggled a bit with their left-winger, but Matwasa never really got a look in down the other flank. Mitchell Tait is becoming a very good footballer.
I appreciate Campbell worked hard and he did run the channels and held the ball up where he could, but for me he struggled a bit against good opposition. He’ll have a lot easier games and I’m sure he’ll score goals.
As solid as ever from Joe Maguire. Goodson still a little out of touch but that will come. Where were Brown-Hill and Frances?
Billy Bennett just seems to get better year-on-year. He could play in any position on the park and have a good game. He ain’t the quickest, but he’s got that nous that the good players develop as they get a bit older. He ain’t that big but he wins a lot of headers and he rarely gets caught out positionally. I like his emotion as well; he’ll let everyone around him know in no uncertain terms if he’s not happy with a pass or a decision. And one other thing, we’ve often struggled in the past in getting bodies in the opposition box, and I appreciate he was playing left midfield and not left full-back, but for our first and second goals who was in the box anticipating a cross coming in? Billy Bennett.
Difficult not to give it to Billy Bennett, but MOM for me would be split between Troke and Wakefield. Top performance from Troke. Showed real class. What a fabulous turn and cross for our first goal. Took his goal well as well. Wakefield is probably more the unsung hero type but what an unbelievable engine that lad’s got. One minute he’s helping out Marzano on one flank, then he’s helping out Tait on the other flank, then he’s breaking up attacks down the middle, and then he plays a lovely ball to put in Troke for our third.
I was really disappointed when they scored; I was really hoping for a clean sheet, I thought we’d deserved one. There again, if you’d offered me a 3-1 win before the game I’d have snatched your hand off. Onwards and upwards.

well i can`t comment on the game as i couldnt get but what i have heard sounds very good indeed. But first of all i want to thank the team for ramming that prediction i made down my throat lol . The score of 1-3 was a fantastic score especially as it was against one the top sides for the league. As i am really glad about the score the one really important thing for me was how well the team defended , which i have got to admit i thought we would be lacking as much. Felt sorry for the defence and Ross in goal coz it seemed they heading for a clean sheet .
Fair play to Ghandi for having the balls to change the team as Stamford`s pitch was on the high side i hear . Another big game tonight , which YET AGAIN i can`t bloody get as i am on the wrong shift !!!!! ( anyone out there with i job i can take which doesnt involve three sodding shifts ??????

Stamford's Match Report :
ROBINS TAKE LEAGUE OPENER
BY RICHARD CURTIS
Stamford began life in the new Midlands division of the Northern Premier League with a defeat to Ilkeston Town. There was a debut for goalkeeper Dan Wallis who joined Stamford earlier in the week. He replaced Max Peverell who was on the bench. There was also starts for James Hicks and Mike Armstrong with them replacing Joe Butterworth and Rodrigo Goncalves.
The first chance of the game fell to our visitor when Alex Troke found Zak Goodson he held off James Blunden but dragged his shot wide of the goal. Both sides were having trouble creating any clear-cut chances in the first half and neither keeper was forced into making a save.
This changed towards the end of the first half, when a cross from the right was not cleared by the Daniels defence and Billy Bennett was on hand to score. Stamford looked to respond and a cross from Connor Bartle was just side of the far post with the goalkeeper scrambling.
At the start of the second half a cross from the left was headed by Cosmos Matwasa towards Cameron Johnson but the Daniels frontman was unable to connect with the ball. As the hour mark approached the Daniels had a corner which was met by Tom Siddons, but his effort was headed off the line.
A few minutes later and Ilkeston doubled their advantage. This was goal was almost a carbon copy of the first as Troke crossed the ball from the right and he found Bennett unmarked for his to head home.
Stamford looked to respond and a cross from Bartle found Siddons but his header was wide of the goal. Then Matwasa burst into the penalty area and he tried to find Jon Challinor but the cross was cleared for a corner. The resultant corner was swung in and again Siddons effort was blocked on the line.
With 15 minutes remaining, a cross from the right fell to James Blunden and the defender had time to poke the ball goalwards but Ross Durrant in the visiting goal pulled off a good save.
On 80 minutes, the visitors got a third. Charlie Wakefield lifted the ball forwards, and it was taken down by Troke who then lifted the ball over Wallis in the Daniels goal. They almost had a fourth when Wakefield had a shot which was blocked by Wallis.
Stamford grabbed a consolation goal in injury time when Bartle crossed from the left and the ball found its way to Challinor who slotted the ball past Durrant at the near post.
