FA Cup Preliminary Round
Quorn 1 Ilkeston Town 2
A second half Alex Troke penalty proved to be enough to take Ilkeston into the next round of the FA Cup. After a competitive first half Ilkeston went on to gain the upper hand but Quorn keeper Max Culverwell proved difficult to beat.
Ilkeston started well and Jack Rogers was first to test Culverwell after cutting inside and letting go. The opening goal arrived on 14 minutes following a move involving James Reid which ended with Charlie Wakefield hammering home James Carvell’s cross. But the lead didn’t last. Quorn went straight down the other end and Leke Shodunke hit a spectacular leveller that went into the top corner of the net via the upright. On 20 minutes Culverwell saved Aman Verma’s diving header and then he denied Troke. Quorn hit back and had an effort deflected for a corner before Durrant had to tip over a header. A clever pass by James Carvell provided an opportunity for Rogers but Culverwell pulled off another fine save. Just before half time Rashaan Frances’s cross nearly found the top corner but the teams went in level.
The first chance in the second half was a Nathan Dale free kick on the edge of the area which was too high but Ilkeston were starting to take control. Zak Goodson was introduced and immediately caused problems for the home defence and it was inevitably he who won the penalty on 68 minutes which Troke confidently converted. Culverwell continued to deny Ilkeston first with a fine save from a Kieran Fenton header then two saves in quick succession from Goodson and Carvell as Ilkeston pushed for a third. Another Carvell effort was narrowly wide but Ilkeston nearly paid the price for not making the game safe when Quorn had a big chance at the death but Durrant came to Ilkeston’s rescue.

For me - not the ‘dominant’ display described by the official club Twitter but a better one
We were probably 60/40 on possession and 70/30 on chances and were the better side but Quorn always carried a threat and should be pleased with their afternoon’s work
A good opportunity to give players minutes saw Francis Verma Irvine Carvell Rogers & Reid contribute well. Shame Francis got injured but there were no 5/10s like Tuesday. No 9s either for me with Wakefield our MOM - showing his ability in an advanced role
One thing I’m learning is that games on plastic are so much quicker than grass. More end to end too so we must accept I think that we’ll see more 3 2s than 0 0s at home this season
All in all a pretty good day. A few bob banked and into the next round. Minutes in some legs too. Well done to all involved

I was not at the game myself but most people I have spoke to who where have said we were better than we were second half on Tuesday. A couple mentioned how fired up James Cullingworth was. I cannot remember him being aggressive at Ilkeston but then again he maybe felt he had a point to prove. I thought in the friendly he was either being wound up or was winding our players up to get an advantage. It was good to see James Reid apparently play well and Jack Rogers and others who came in contribute to the victory.
It will be interesting who we get in the next round! Say Eastwood CFC at home!

Very Even In The First 45 Minutes. Both sides with chances to stamp authority on the game. 2 Goals in 2 Minutes was the highlight of the first half. Let's hope for more after the restart.
Full Time Score :- @QuornAFC 1-2 @ilkestontown_fc
Proud of our lads today. Second Half we started very well but a penalty and subsequent goal to Ilkeston stopped our tempo and the game turned tense till the finish. However Great Game To Witness Today!

Cracking FA Cup tie between @QuornAFC and @ilkestontown_fc with a 2-1 win for Ilson. Stand out performances by ex Pies @CulverwellMax in the Quorn goal and @sternjr14 at the heart of the Ilson defence who was up against Luke Varney for much of the game. A credit to both teams
