Re: Halesowen v Ilkeston : FA Cup : Sat 4 Sep

Whatever was in the half time tea needs bottling

First half we were like scared kids versus men. No physical presence. Deserved 02

Even before the subs we took it to the after ht. they looked tired slow and leggy. We bossed second half big time

Once we add bennett Reid Troke Fenton Maguire to today we’ll match them for sure. They are decent. But so are we

Lots of positives IMO. Stern Irvine my MOM

Match Report

Sat 4th Sep 2021
FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round
HALESOWEN TOWN  2  ILKESTON TOWN  1
Ilkeston paid the price for a poor first half showing against Halesowen trailing 0-2 at the interval.  A much better second half performance reduced the deficit but it was Halesowen who progress to the next round.
Halesowen are unbeaten so far and they showed why with a strong start forcing Ilkeston to defend in numbers. Chris Last was first to test Ross Durrant on 7 minutes. The winger made progress down the left and broke into the area but Durrant was off his line quickly to foil him. With the hosts having the majority of possession it took Ilkeston 20 minutes to create their first chance and they nearly scored. James Carvell provided the pass to Patrick Webb who brought a fine save from the Yeltz keeper. Just as it appeared that Ilkeston were coping with the almost constant pressure, Halesowen were awarded a penalty from which Harry White made it 1-0 on 31 minutes. Seven minutes later it was two with White again the scorer after what looked like a defensive mix up.
Presumably the Ilkeston players were given a stern talking to during the interval because there was an immediate improvement after the break. Three minutes in, Charlie Wakefield burst past two defenders and fired only just wide. On 54 minutes Ilkeston made three changes and started to push Halesowen back. The pressure was rewarded when Zak Goodson deservedly pulled one back. White should have competed his hat-trick following a Halesowen counter attack but he blazed over. At the other end Stern Irvine saw a fine effort go just the wrong side of the post. Durrant then saved Ilkeston with a close range save from Lait. Ilkeston tried hard to find a late leveller but Halesowen stood firm. Ilkeston star performer; Stern Irvine.

Re: Halesowen v Ilkeston : FA Cup : Sat 4 Sep

.

The general feeling on the supporters coach after the game was that had we put out our strongest team we could have won.  But at least we now know that when we play them again in the league we have the capability to beat them.
Halesowen appear to be very strong starters but maybe they are not so good after half time. It seemed that when our fresh legs came on they were already losing their grip on the game. (Against Sporting Khalsa they led 3-0 at half time and it ended 3-2).
After the first half I thought they looked really good side. They never allowed our starting eleven to get a foothold. I felt sorry for Webb who had very little support and had to go it alone. We defended well enough until the penalty but we could easily have been more than two down at the interval.
Second half we more than matched them but without creating enough clear cut opportunities. For me, Ilkeston’s MOM by a mile was Stern Irvine.
Martin Carruthers was not at all happy after the match. He felt that the first half team should have done much better.
