Brown-Hill and Carvell come on for last few minutes. Durrant does well to save when faced with Corby forward one on one. Corby haven't given up and they have a free kick on edge of area. Clifton fires his shot into the wall.

Half way through the second half at 0-0 it looked like it could be a frustrating afternoon against a decent Corby side but once Alex Troke had smashed in the first goal we never looked back. Zak quickly made it 2-0 with a cracker and it was game over. Two goals at the death made the win look more emphatic than it was but good for our goal difference which could be important in a tight league. Good team performance with every player contributing including the subs. Ross made an important save at 2-0 to stop Corby giving us a nervy finish. A great finish from Patrick Webb looked to have given us a 3-0 win but there was more to come when Ollie weaved his way past three defenders before being brought down for a penalty which Campbell smacked home. A fair reward for Remaye after another good performance. I thought Williams, Chapman and Troke also excelled. We move up a place to 3rd after Carlton inexplicably only drew with bottom cub Histon.

Sat 6th November 2021 Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town 4 Corby Town 0
This was not the easy win the scoreline may suggest but four goals in the final 20 minutes gave Ilkeston the points and a boost to their goal difference. Alex Troke broke Corby’s resistance on 70 minutes and this was quickly followed by a Zak Goodson cracker. Two further goals at the death made the win look more emphatic than it was.
Corby came to the New Manor Ground with an excellent defensive record and their first half performance showed why as Ilkeston struggled to make scoring opportunities. Elliott Sandy nearly put Corby ahead on 15 minutes with a lob that was just too high and James Clifton had a similar effort with the same result ten minutes later. Ilkeston came closest to scoring when Kieran Fenton’s free kick struck the crossbar before being scrambled clear.
Ilkeston started the second half with real determination and Corby soon found themselves under constant pressure. Keeper Matthew Hall pulled off a brilliant reaction save from Troke’s close range header as Ilkeston’s attacking threat increased. Headers from Campbell, Maguire and Fenton were all too high before Ilkeston finally broke the deadlock. Hall did really well to keep out Campbell’s effort but Troke was there to gleefully hammer in the rebound. Before Corby could recover Goodson made it 2-0 with an outstanding finish from the edge of the area into the bottom corner of the net. Five minutes from time Corby had a big chance to get back in the game when Owen Montgomery found himself with just Ross Durrant to beat but the Ilkeston keeper denied him with a saving block. On 90 minutes Patrick Webb raced through and drove the ball past Hall for Ilkeston’s third. There was time for one more and it was created by Ollie Brown-Hill who weaved his way past three defenders before being brought down for a penalty which was calmly slotted home by Campbell.

Mike kindly drove me back home where i nodded off but woke up at the third goal. Gutted i missed the game plus the Corby fans were really good with their singing .

We now have our best starting XI nailed
So if we have some good luck with injuries / suspensions we will finish at least in the play offs. The signings of Chapman Bird and Williams have finished things off. Plus we have a capable back up keeper too
Chapman Bird & Williams are all steady reliable players. Nothing fancy but all know their roles. We have a quality bench too
Tests will come away from home on heavy pitches ie like Bromsgrove - but with our full side we’d have beaten them IMO
Fingers crossed. With no cups to distract us we are well positioned. A good effort so far by all involved from supporters through players subs coaches managers and owners. At the start of the season the likes of Halesowen & Stamford seemed better equipped than us but we’ve won away at both and believe me they will be concerned about us now

Good all-round performance on Saturday. Another game where we had to stay patient and we eventually broke the opposition down.
Corby's 3 and 6 looked like good defenders and Goodson was getting no change at all from the 3 and I was beseeching him to try swapping wings with Wakefield, and then he cuts inside and scores a beauty - what do I know!
You have to say that there are plenty of good signs at the moment:
- Our owners are clearly backing our management team with any new players they need.
- We've definitely tightened up at the back; we don't seem to be giving away daft goals anymore. It certainly helps having Chapman and Bird shielding the defence. I really like Adam Chapman, I think he's a good addition to the squad. And Williams, the right-back, seems to get better game on game.
- The best thing for me about Saturday’s performance was that it was a mature performance. We didn't charge at them thinking we should have the game won after half an hour, we stayed patient, kept our shape, made sure we didn't give anything away, and kept plugging away. And we got our rewards. Yes, there will be more difficult games ahead, Corby defended well for an hour but they looked a bit powder puff in attack.
- We’ve got a good squad. A good starting eleven and players on the bench who can come on and change the game if things are not going well - Webb, Brown Hill, Carvell, and so on.
Onwards and upwards!
Anyone know why Reidy wasn't available on Saturday?

Good points by Trowell Nicky and Dick! I agree that Adam Chapman has added a bit of solidity and guile to the midfield and we have a very strong back up squad. Reidy was at the game so I presume he has a niggle thats making him less than 100% fit. I thought we were the better side on Saturday but Corby played well and were holding out until the last 20 minutes. 4-0 made the difference between the sides greater than it probably was.
Their club officials were lovely, polite and very knowledgeable. It was a pleasure to talk to them before the game, at half-time and after the game. I always used to think their manager Gary Mills would end up at Ilkeston one day as a manager as he was always down the NMG watching games. It is probably why he used to do so well as Manager of Grantham in games against us because he had watched us so often.

Have to agree, I can't remember us having a stronger squad than this and Martin Carruthers may have to rotate it on a regular basis in order to keep all of the players engaged. Saturday's eleven starters was a cracking lineup and it didn't include class players like Reid, Tait, Frances, Brown-Hill, Irvine, Webb and Carvell.
If we can keep this squad then we must have a fair chance of achieving our promotion objective.
We don't just have cover in all positions we have alternatives if things aren't going to plan. All players have different strengths and skills so Carruthers can pick the players best suited to compete against whoever the opposition is.
Regarding the three new players : Chapman impressed me straight away with his positional play. You're not going to see him racing around but he always seems to be in the right place. Williams doesn't take risks, he's a solid defender and not much gets past him. If i'm honest, I'm not totally convinced by Jared Bird so far but I'm happy to give him time. I've heard that he's not played for a while so perhaps he's not yet up to speed. His playing record before his arrival tells me he's a star player and it's just a matter of time before he shows it to an ignoramus like me.
