Mark Clifford Steps Down

'
Mark Clifford steps down as Ilkeston chairman

Mark Clifford has stepped down from his role as Ilkeston chairman.

Clifford said he had made the decision in order to assess his options and signalled his desire to once again work with players once again on the training ground.

In a statement released on the club’s website he said:  “When I came in as manager in August 2019 it was a great moment for me, a real privilege to manage a club that I had become extremely fond of over the years, starting with my loan spell from Mansfield Town as a young pro nearly 30 years ago.“

Soon afterwards whilst attending in support of me, Dave (Hilton) and Andrew (Nally) became interested in investing at the club and we very quickly together started to plan, rebuild, modernise and rebrand.

“This meant certain personal sacrifices had to be made by me as my passion once my playing career ended had always been coaching and management.

"The club takeover and off field matters meant that I had to stop doing something that I loved to ensure that all hands were on deck in order to move the club forward through not only the transition of ownership, but also through a pandemic and major development works.

“The timing of the takeover couldn’t have been any worse if I’m completely honest and I have to thank Dave and Andrew for the way they have backed the club financially and myself through what was a very difficult time with no fixtures, no income, and no business activity. “The improvements have also been phenomenal and are there for all to see.

“I hope that moving forward people can understand my decision and respect the fact that life is too short to carry any regret. I worked extremely hard over the years to achieve my UEFA A licence coaching qualification and this enables me to have the greatest impact on the training field.

"Whilst being part of the ownership of a football club may seem glamorous to some, most of the time it certainly is not. Over the past few months my desire to return to the dugout has grown considerably.

"The business side of the club has replaced working with players on the grass and this in turn has become a constant noise in my head, one that I finally have to listen to.

“With all of this in mind I have taken the decision to step away, in order to give me more time to assess my options, to discover what is out there for me either now or in the very near future.

"This is something I simply could not find the time to do whilst juggling my work commitments, family time and running of the club.

“The club however is in great hands and has a real positive future. “I would like to thank Martin, Danny Draper, Liam Attwood, Mike and Kelly Pike and Mark Frost for all of their assistance, along with everyone else at the club that have supported me, but most of all, I would like to wish my friends Dave and Andrew all the very best with the club moving forward.“We have together contributed towards unifying a community, created wonderful facilities and helped hundreds of children feel part of something bigger and better.”

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

.

Many people are surprised and baffled by Mark Clifford's announcement today. We'll have to see how this develops.

Meanwhile a big thank you to Mark for the role he played in David Hilton and Andrew Nally's amazing transformation of the New Manor Ground.

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

I am gutted at this development. Mark has done so much to rescue the club from the very dark place it was heading towards before he took over. We have to respect his reasons for stepping down but I have no idea who can step into his shoes.

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

Yeh, not good, but life goes on. Fully understand Mark’s position, he wants to coach players rather than be in an office/business/admin role. Good luck to him.

You never know, it might give us the chance to get someone in who’s better suited to the role, someone who is more the office/business/admin type and who doesn’t have ambitions to be a coach.

Whatever, the footy goes on. 3 points on Saturday please.

I’m not sure anything in football surprises you anymore, but boy, the Buxton management team getting the sack seems very harsh to me. They took the decision to take a family holiday that had been cancelled a number of times because of Covid and they had to take it before the end of the year or they’d have lost their money. A 20-game unbeaten start to the season. Yes, it’s a big weekend for the club, but surely a little compassion would have been in order.

seems to me theres somethin more going here because they (Buxton) were very quick to replace the management . Stinks to high heaven sacking the management especially whats been going off the last few years .

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

Cunningham was sacked by Curzon Ashton for talking to another club (presumably Buxton)

Then the Buxton management get sacked for going away. Coincidence perhaps? 🤣

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

I can understand why the Assistant Manager got sacked after going on a pre booked holiday and only letting the club know a week before the biggest game in the clubs history against York City bit I have no idea why the Manager Gary Hayward had to go as well. I thought the managers from Curzon had been sacked for talking to Telford!
Anyway I am sure that Mark Clifford will find a suitable post with an ambitious club as a Manager or Coach I just wish he was still with us. He was always so positive and always looking to move forward. When he came to Ilkeston most of us oldies were very sceptical and negative after the the way the Alan Hardy era ended. Mark picked us up and gave us hope!

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

That’s unusual. The oldies being sceptical! I sometimes wonder why some of them bother coming. They don’t sound like they enjoy it. Unless they enjoy moaning of course. I’ll leave that one there……

Re: Mark Clifford Steps Down

.

How coincidental, Basford should make him an offer a few days after leaving Ilkeston.
