Rare loss for Ilkeston Town but other results go in our favour and we are still top of the table. All top three lost today. Surprises toady were at Shepshed who brat Halesowen 2-1 and at Stamford if Soham can hold on for a point!

Can’t win em all. Khalsa were the better side and deserved to win
We can argue the ifs & buts & maybes all day long. But it’’s just one of those days
Other results fell right so we’re still top. It’s been a great run so now we have to build another one
Just put it down to experience and move on. We deserved nothing from the game

Sounds like a game that you have to put down to experience, learn from our mistakes and go again. Not defending an unbeaten run takes a bit of pressure off maybe and next week we can take it out on Stamford who have had a serious wobble today. The top three teams all lost today so todays defeat is not as bad as it could have been had our rivals all picked up three points.

Sporting Khalsa 4 Ilkeston Town 2
Ilkeston’s nine game winning run was brought to an end by a storming Khalsa fightback. The Robins led by 2-1 at half time but Khalsa finished worthy winners with three second half goals.
Ilkeston were denied what looked like a certain penalty in the opening minutes when Jared Bird was tripped in the area. Bird then had a chance on the edge of the area but his effort cleared the bar. Khalsa’s tricky winger Luke Yates was causing problems and created a good chance for Josh McKenzie. Mckenzie was soon involved again when he crossed to Liam Armstrong but Ross Durrant saved well. Khalsa keeper Sam Arnold then did well to rob Remaye Campbell on the six yard line but on 25 minutes a chance fell to Zak Goodson and he took it. Khalsa reacted forcefully but Ilkeston went two up when Billy Bennett’s cross was turned into his own goal by Michael Perks. Just before half time Khalsa got one back when Perks made up for his own goal with a header from a corner.
The second half was more open with both sides creating chances, Ilkeston started brightly and Khalsa were put under real pressure but there was no end product. The game then swung Khalsa’s way and Mckenzie made a great chance for James McGrady who fired over when he should have scored. On 68 minutes Khalsa were awarded a penalty and McGrady equalised from the spot. Both teams pushed for a winner and it went Khalsa’s way with a superb header by Sean Williams on 82 minutes. Ilkeston battled for an equaliser and Charlie Wakefield made a great chance for Goodson but he put it wide. Ilkeston were made to pay for the miss when Yates made sure of the points for Khalsa in added time.

It was a weekend of surprises as the top three all lost.
Carlton are now three games without a win after being held to a goalless draw by Bedworth United.
Chasetown improved their promotion chances by winning the big game at Belper in front of 509 spectators. Joey Butlin and Liam Kirton scored the goals that ended Belper’s six game winning sequence. Chasetown are now twelve games unbeaten with nine wins and three draws.
Coleshill came from 3-1 down the snatch a last minute win at Cambridge to keep their playoff chances alive. The frenzied finish saw Yaw Ofosu of Cambridge sent off in added time. Coleshill have the best away record in the league, winning 8 of their 9 matches on the road.
The basement battle between Daventry and Histon ended all square. Daventry scored first but Histon levelled within a minute.
Once unstoppable Halesowen lost for a third time, this time at hands of Shepshed Dynamo. Matt Melbourne scored both Shepshed goals and both sides had a player sent off.
Yaxley made it back to back wins with a victory over Spalding which takes them away from the relegation places.
Sporting Khalsa pulled off the result of the day by beating league leaders, Ilkeston Town. Khalsa recovered from a 2-0 deficit to run out worthy winners.
Highflying Stamford were surprised by bottom club Soham Town Rangers. Alfie Connor’s equaliser earned Soham a point after Stamford’s Mike Armstrong was sent off.
Sutton Coldfield’s dismal run continued with a 2-1 home defeat by Loughborough Dynamo.
Sam Bennett scored twice for Wisbech including a last minute winner against Corby who have now lost their last four.

My opinion :
Not one of our better performances but credit to Khalsa for a remarkable second half display. It was one of those matches that could have gone either way. We could have been given a penalty early on but it didn't seem to matter when we led by 2-0. It could be said that you shouldn't lose from that position but Khalsa got one back on the stroke of half time to bring them back into the game. Ilkeston's start to the second half was their best spell of the match. Several chances were created as Khalsa were pinned back but they survived the onslaught. Unfortunately it didn't last long and Khalsa soon turned the tide and started to look dangerous themselves. I was too far away to comment the validity of Khalsa's penalty but Bennett was booked for his complaints. After the penalty equaliser both teams tried to find a winner and there were chances at both ends but it was Khalsa who made the late break through. We had a great opportunity to equalise when Wakefield crossed to Goodson who should have scored but somehow put the ball wide. 3-3 would have been a scoreline that both sides would probably have settled for but Khalsa went on to score again at the death to make sure of the points.
We knew the run had to end sometime and this defeat will be forgotten if we are able to turn over Stamford next weekend.

My man of the match has to be Billy Bennett. He was up against the excellent Luke Yates but Billy was still my MOM. Billy always gives 100% commitment, never shirks anything and wants the ball all the time. What a player!!! It was his cross that forced the Khalsa player's own goal.
When I collected the referee's cautions sheet after the game I asked why Billy had been booked and he said it was for disputing the Khalsa penalty. Apparently Billy was fuming.

FROM CARLTON'S WEBSITE
DECEMBER 11, 2021
GOOD AWAY POINT FOR THE MILLERS
Carlton secured a clean sheet and a point away to Bedworth United, a team with an excellent home record and although the managers would obviously have liked all 3, it was a decent result coming on the back of the 2-1 defeat to Sporting Khalsa.
To put Carlton’s defeat in midweek into perspective, Sporting Khalsa beat league leaders Ilkeston Town 4-2 showing they are a decent team indeed.
Chasetown beat Belper Town 2-0 to strengthen their promotion credentials while Halesowen went down 2-1 to Shepshed Dynamo who are Carlton’s opponents next Saturday.
Soham Town Rangers continue to improve and held high flying Stamford to a 2-2 draw, while Coleshill had a fine 4-3 win at Cambridge City.
Carlton are 7th, just a point outside the playoff zone , but have played a game more than the teams directly above them.

As disappointed as myself and the supporters are that the run comes to an end, I promise that nobody is hurting as much as our players. What they have achieved so far this season Is fantastic and we should all remember that they are the reason the bar has been set so high.
We now dust off and start a new winning run. Congratulations to @SportingKhalsa who were again exceptional against us and deserved their win today. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I hope we never play them again. I wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season.
