Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

Very solid. Days like today - windy/ bumpy pitches etc are prime for upsets - see Halesowen result

Picking a third c back versus direct opposition proved to be the right call. So credit to the management for getting selection right

A big three points no doubt and a very good all round team effort. Defended well. Maggie was the best he’s been for a while. MOM for me Fenton again. Top class. But run close by Goodson whose goals were crucial

One cup final won. Another one Tuesday!

Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

.

Conditions were similar to Yaxley, in that the wind made passing football really difficult. We certainly weren't at our best but we dug in and defended really well. The back line of Williams, Irvine, Maguire and Fenton were all excellent and Corby were restricted to only a few half chances. Corby fought all the way and will no doubt feel they deserved a better result. I felt the game was not won until Goodson scored his second which was top class. Chapman worked really hard in midfield as did Campbell up front.

Conditions can affect results but maybe that wasn't the case at Halesowen. Apparently Spalding deserved their win. Halesowen's defeat and our win gives us a bit of daylight. The Yeltz play again Monday night at Coleshill,  another tricky game for them.

A good day for us and we need to capitalise on it by beating Loughborough on Tuesday night.

Halesowen lost to a goal from Gregg Smith. Earlier in  the day some twitterati were taking the mick saying he was a tad overweight. They are not laughing now! Although after looking at the video they posted they did have a point!

Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

.

Very quick match report

Sat 5th February 2022  Northern Premier League
Corby Town  0  Ilkeston Town  2
Excellent defending and a goal in each half by Zak Goodson earned Ilkeston the points in blustery conditions at Steel Park.
There was an unusual situation after only six minutes when the referee pulled up with an injury. He notified both dugouts and an announcement was made over the tannoy asking if there was a qualified referee in the ground. After a few minutes delay he soldiered on with reduced mobility.
First chance of the game fell to Corby’s danger man Sam Moore. He took the ball past Ross Durrant but Kieran Fenton got back to dispossess him. Ilkeston scored on their first real attack. Alex Troke found Tommy Williams on the right and his low cross was slammed in at the far post by Goodson. Corby pressed for an equaliser but shots from distance by Connor Furey, Sam Moore and James Clifton were all off target.
Ilkeston made a positive start to the second half. Influential Adam Chapman saw a decent effort fly past the post and Corby keeper Ben Heath had a lucky escape when he mishandled the ball. Corby then made a determined push to draw level but despite some good possession they were denied real opportunities. On the hour Moore crossed to Elliot Sandy in the box but Fenton got there first, then one of the Steelmen’s best attacking moves was brought to an end by a last ditch Williams interception. After soaking up all that Corby could muster, Goodson made the game safe for Ilkeston with a super strike on 81 minutes after being found by James Reid. Corby had two half chances near the end. One was stopped by a dominant Joe Maguire and then Stern Irvine blocked a pile driver to preserve the clean sheet. Well done to the referee for seeing out the game.

Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

Ref did ok. When I saw his name I was concerned. It’s the same fella that sent Charlie Marzano off at Spalding last season. Loves to be the centre of attention. But credit where it’s due he got most of the big decisions right

Their bench were crying about the ball being out when Fents clipped it up the line in the lead up to goal one. We were right on top of it though and it was nowhere near out. Stern’s yellow was the correct call too and meant he had to tread carefully thereafter. I thought he did pretty well and his physicality and pace were important against a direct opposition

Playing the back 3 enabled Wakefield to play higher. He’s far too talented to waste at left back but needs must at the moment

Feel a bit sorry for OBH. Decent player who never lets us down when called upon. He must be very frustrated but I guess that’s football

A very good win in awful conditions. Hopefully Coleshill can turn Halesowen over Monday. There’s no love lost between the sides that’s for sure. Will nip down and have a look

Hope Bennett & Gibson aren’t far away from fitness. Add those two to yesterday and it’s a hell of a squad

Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

Sometimes you've just got to grind a result out. And that's what we did. Fantastic effort from the boys. Horrible conditions, bobbly pitch, and playing a team with a very direct style. Certainly not one for the purist and a game of very few chances - did Corby have a good chance in the whole game? Terrific defending from our lads.

Fenton is having a terrific season, and just gets better game on game.

The lack of pace at the back is a bit concerning - Fenton, Maguire, and Williams certainly ain't the quickest, but we've got away with it so far. We do get exposed sometimes when we come up against a speedy winger.

I wonder if Brown-Hill and Carvell will get a run out against Loughborough? I'd give Irvine and Fenton a go as the centre-backs.

Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

.

Mark Duffy's Derbyshire Times match report :

REPORT: Corby Town 0-2 Ilkeston Town - Goodson's double keeps Robins top
Ilkeston have won games far more attractively and convincingly than this over the course of the season but a 2-0 victory in a wind-battered Northamptonshire could end up being one of the more satisfying results of the campaign.
It was a poor game where quality was neither allowed nor able to shine through thanks to Steel Park being buffeted throughout by swirling gales, but that will only make these three points even sweeter for an Ilkeston side that defended superbly throughout and ultimately won thanks to two moments of quality from top scorer Zak Goodson.
His second goal in particular was a sight for the somewhat fatigued eyes of those who had been forced to watch the preceding 80 minutes, and a moment that Ilkeston deserved if for nothing other than their efforts in repelling the hosts at the other end.
It wasn’t that keeper Ross Durrant had needed to make many saves, more that the defence and Durrant himself had dealt well with the wind-affected crosses flung their way and limited Corby’s entries into the penalty area throughout, the hosts mostly making do with shots from distance.
And it all added up to a win that left Ilkeston alone at the top thanks to a defeat for Halesowen Town who drop to third behind the now second-placed Chasetown
After an early delay thanks to an injury to referee Martyn Fryer – the Nottingham official eventually able to carry on for the whole game despite pulling a hamstring – Corby nearly found a way through 12 minutes in when Sam Moore got to a long ball before Durrant but couldn’t get a shot in on the empty goal before Kieran Fenton dived in to tackle well and Ilkeston cleared.
But it was the Robins who would take the lead six minutes later when Alex Troke’s fine ball sent Tommy Williams down the inside right channel and he squared for Goodson to find the roof of the net from six yards out.
Connor Furey curled a free-kick just wide for the hosts on 25 as they sought a way back into the game, Moore then driving an effort past the post from outside the penalty area and James Clifton doing similar on 34 minutes.
Jordan O’Brien was next, his shot from distance just too high but those kinds of efforts were all the hosts were being allowed by a combination of good defending and the wind interference.
The second-half saw Ilkeston with the wind at their back and Adam Chapman’s low effort in the opening minute was just wide.
Chances then became very few and far between as the conditions continued to be largely in charge, although Ilkeston were defending well as a unit to repel most of what was thrown at them.
The back three of Fenton, Joe Maguire and Stern Irvine were rock solid, the latter throwing himself bravely at a Corby shot late on.
And the visitors would then secure the killer blow with a second on 81 minutes, as Goodson received the ball on the right edge of the penalty area and curled a superb effort into the far corner.
That would ultimately be enough, the hosts huffing and puffing but unable to break through and it being left hard to fault the Robins’ display as they returned back up the M1 with the points ahead of their next assignment at home to Loughborough Dynamo on Tuesday night.

Corby: Heath, Hartley (Garwood 66), Apindia, Abimbola, White, Mulligan, Furey (Brittain 76), Clifton, Sandy, O’Brien, Moore  Not used: Gee, Grubor, Taylor
Ilkeston: Durrant, Williams, Irvine, Chapman, Maguire, Fenton, Goodson, Bird (Verma 79), Campbell, Troke (Reid 63), Wakefield  Not used: Caine, Brown-Hill, Carvell

Re: Corby Town v Ilkeston Town - 5th Feb'22

.

Northamptonshire Telegraph match report :

Loss to the leaders is 'hard to take' for Corby Town boss Mills
The Steelmen were beaten by the league leaders at Steel Park
By Jon Dunham

Gary Mills admitted it was another “hard one to take” as Corby Town were beaten 2-0 by Northern Premier League Midlands leaders Ilkeston Town at Steel Park.
The Steelmen turned in another battling display but were ultimately undone by a goal in each half, both scored by Zak Goodson for the visitors.
The loss came a week on from a 3-2 defeat at another of the league’s high-flyers Chasetown, another game in which boss Mills felt his team deserved more for their efforts.
“That’s two weeks running where it’s been hard to take,” the Steelmen boss said.
“I didn’t think there was anything in the game really. The conditions didn’t help but you have to deal with it.
“They worked hard. It was difficult for them out there. The pitch is bobbly and the wind was bad. It was a case of playing the conditions the best you can.
“They have worked hard and, performance wise, I couldn’t ask for more than they gave me.
“The ball didn’t quite drop for us in the first half and Jordan O'Brien had the best chance for us in the second half to equalise. Those types of opportunities are the ones you have to take in games like this. It’s little things that cost you.
“The lads battled and battled and we switched off for the first goal where the lad has got in round the back too easily for me. We were a goal down having started the game better than them.
“They are top and we are having such a poor season that we didn’t envisage at the start of the season and we are having to battle to try to get points.
“So, to say there was nothing in the game against the team at the top, it’s hard to take.
“Through sheer desire and our play in general, a draw probably would have been a fair result.”
The Steelmen have some midweek action ahead of them as they make the trip to take on Cambridge City on Wednesday night.
