Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

.

Next up is Spalding United away.  With now just a single point lead at the top of the table we really need maximum points from this match.

Spalding United are one of those teams that you don’t know what you’ll get when you play against them. Their home record is : P14, Won 7, Drawn 2, Lost 5.

They are mid table and we beat them 5-0 at the NMG. However, they have beaten Halesowen, Stamford and Coleshill and that shows what they are capable of on their day.

If the match is called off -   it could be re-arranged to be played on Saturday March 5th when there is no fixture.

With the two new signings we're now unsure what our team will be to play at Spalding. Charlie Jemson is a central defender but I'm not sure what Morgan Thomas-Sadler's favoured defensive position is.

Re: Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

.

The last time we went to Spalding, this was the result :

Tuesday 6th October 2020  :  Northern Premier League - South East Division
Spalding United  1 Ilkeston Town  2
Ilkeston remain unbeaten despite playing one short for 80 minutes after Charlie Marzano saw red. The Robins got off to a flying start with a goal inside the first five minutes. Alex Troke did really well keeping possession before giving Zak Goodson the opportunity to bulge the net. Ilkeston were well in command when Marzano’s late challenge was deemed to be worthy of a straight red. Despite the player advantage Spalding were kept at bay and Ilkeston made more scoring opportunities up until half time. Goodson was a constant threat while Spalding’s chances were few and far between.
The second half saw much more determination from the hosts. They had two big scoring opportunities in quick succession and Kieran Fenton had to clear off the line before Ilkeston swept down the other end and went two up on 54 minutes. Goodson was again the scorer taking his season’s tally to seven in six matches. Spalding were stung into action and Ilkeston were forced to defend for most of the remaining time. On the hour Ilkeston were fortunate when a Spalding effort hit  the outside of the post. As the game progressed Ilkeston were under almost constant pressure with Kieran Fenton outstanding at the back. Spalding finally broke through on 85 minutes and what a goal it was by Scott Floyd through a crowded goalmouth right into the far top corner. That signalled an almighty effort by Spalding to grab a point. Ilkeston were hanging on when the board went up showing five added minutes. A Spalding shot skimmed the crossbar but that was the closest they got as Ilkeston held on to the three points.

Re: Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

With Maguire and Fenton unavailable, in my opinion we need Stern Irvine in our defence at Spalding. Stern is the quickest central defender we have. I don't know about Morgan Thomas-Sadler but from what I remember Charlie Jemson was not noted for his speed. Quick central defenders are pretty rare and any footballer with pace tends to play up front.

I was wondering where the new signings leave Joe Maguire. I'm guessing Charlie Jemson is in direct competition with Joe so presuming Charlie plays at Spalding, It will be interesting to see how he has developed. Joe Maguire has received some criticism recently but he is more experienced than Charlie Jemson. On the other hand Jemson is 23 so should be approaching his peek. Jemson could play alongside Maguire but that seems unlikely as it would sideline captain, Kieran Fenton, who has been one of our best players this season.

I’m also assuming that Morgan Thomas-Sadler has been brought in because Billy Bennett has a long term injury.

One thing is for sure and that is; we now have even more competition for places and our owners are giving automatic promotion their best shot.

Spalding rely greatly on Jordan Macleod for goals. He is in the top five goalscorers in our league with15 league goals and a hat-tick against Belper in the FA Trophy.
Spalding have used 45 different players this season compared to Ilkeston’s 28.

Eunice Takes Toll On Fixture List

Several Pitch Inspections across the League due to Storm Damage

Storm Eunice has pummelled the UK this afternoon and has lead to several Pitch inspections being arranged for Saturday morning's scheduled fixtures across all the divisions.
Two matches have already fallen this weekend due to the weather - the Friday night fixture between Market Drayton Town and Kidsgrove was postponed at 11am whilst the Premier Division tie between Basford United and Warrington Town was called off following significant damage at Greenwich Avenue including to utilities meaning that safety concerns lead to the postponements.

The following matches have been given scheduled pitch inspections as of Friday 8pm

Re: Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

Disappointed that the game is off but maybe a good thing as we had a weakened side due to suspensions (Fenton and Maguire), injuries (Chapman and Gibson) and illness (Carvell).

The suspensions carry over to the match against Carlton but hopefully Chapman,Gibson and Carvell will be recovered and available.

Postponed matches :
Carlton  P  Halesowen  P
Chasetown  P  Stamford  P
Shepshed  P  Yaxley  P
Spalding Utd  P  Ilkeston Town  P

Matches being played :
Bedworth Utd  v Sporting Khalsa
Cambridge City v Sutton Coldfield
Coleshill Town v Belper Town
Corby Town  v  Histon
Daventry v Soham Town Rangers
Loughborough D  v  Wisbech Town

Re: Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

Looking at the injuries, illness and suspensions a postponement was not too bad a result and with all our rivals called off we will still be top of the table.
The decision now is whether to brave the elements to watch Kimberley Miners Welfare at the NMG with ex Robins Lois Rose, Jordan and Ryan Wheatley or keep warm on the sofa? I know what my heart is saying but my head is just getting thd edge at thd moment!

Re: Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

Half time scores :
Bedworth  1  Khalsa  0
Coleshill  0  Belper  0

Kidderminster  0  Alfreton  0   Abandoned
Buxton  1  Gainsborough  0
Long Eaton  1  Eastwood  0   (Robinson)
Kimberley 3 Holwell 1

The Alfreton match was abandoned following an injury to a player. The ref spoke to both teams before making his decision to abandon. Not sure if it was due to the injury or that the pitch was unsafe to carry on.

A very enjoyable afternoon watching Kimberley today. Even with them winning 7-1 in the 1st half the other side had 2 or 3 good chances to go in front.
A good crowd of around 120

Re: Spalding United v Ilkeston Town : Sat 19 Feb '22 : (Match Postponed)

Enjoyed going down to the NMG watching Kimberley yesterday. Had a good chat with Sav ( well listen|) and Whiteball behind the goal at the home end. Thought the first half after going 2-0 up Holwell made a right game of it nearly scoring with two great chances . The second half saw Kimberley dominate more putting the game to bed . So yes really enjoyed the game .
It was great to have a chat with Lois Rose after the game chatting how he is doing at Kimberley and his past at ilson .
