No one has mentioned Charlie Jemson. I thought he had a steady game without being tested too much. He's very much a safety first defender who doesn't take chances. I've certainly not written off Joe Maguire.

Very steady based on what I’ve seen so far

Feel for Stern though. Waited patiently as number 3 c half. Never let us down and looks like he’s still number 3 after Jemsons arrival

Think he’d do a job at right back too. Hope he sticks with us as he’s one for the future

Sat 5th March 2022  Northern Premier League
Spalding United  0  Ilkeston Town  0
Ilkeston’s promotion push was stalled after a goalless slog in the mud at Spalding. It was a game of very few chances and not a lot of skilful play on the gluepot surface. Fortunately, rivals Halesowen and Chasetown also failed to win so the Robins stay top.
It took seven minutes for the first attempt on goal by Aman Verma which went wide. A shot by Charlie Wakefield was deflected into keeper Michael Duggan’s arms and a Zak Goodson shot was then comfortably saved. Next to have a go was James Reid but his effort was deflected wide by a defender. Spalding’s first genuine attempt on goal came in the 38th minute when Abdul Koroma’s low strike was pushed away by Ross Durrant. The scrappy first half ended with Ilkeston having had the greater possession but without either side creating any clear cut scoring opportunities.
The Robins started the second half with more determination but a Spalding counter attack produced a chance for Dylan Edge which he fired wide. Ben Seymour-Shove then saw his firmly struck shot bring a good save from Durrant. Defences remained on top and neither side really looked like scoring with Spalding always happy to take a point but in the final 15 minutes Ben Starkie and Greg Smith gave them hope of a win. Starkie started to pose a threat with some clever approach play and a blind shot on the turn by Smith was only just wide. Ilkeston regained the initiative towards the end and two minutes from time a Remaye Campbell header from Alex Troke’s cross nearly stole the points. There was one final chance from a free kick about ten yards outside the Spalding area after a foul on Campbell but Kieran Fenton’s effort cleared the crossbar.

From SPALDING TODAY :

Reaction from Spalding United manager Brett Whaley after the goalless draw with Ilkeston Town
By James Bedford

Manager Brett Whaley praised his side's solid defensive foundations as they held league leaders Ilkeston Town to a goalless draw at the Sir Halley Stewart ground on Saturday. The table-topping Robins arrived as the division's leading scorers having netted 83 goals in 30 outings this season. However, Spalding stifled Ilkeston's attacking threat as the Derbyshire visitors failed to score in a league game for just the third time this season as the Tulips kept their fourth clean sheet from their last six games.

Whaley said: "I was pleased with the point which you obviously take against the league leaders. "When we first came in, we tried to defend quite high but we've changed that now by trying to say to sides come and break us down. "Defensively we have become a lot stronger so I was really pleased with the clean sheet as well.  "They had some pressure but our back four are really putting their bodies on the line at the moment and were well protected by the two midfielders in front so, as a group, we defended really well

"When you look at how many goals Ilkeston have scored over the course of the season to keep a clean sheet against them is a real achievement." The Tulips also created the better openings in a close contest of few clear-cut chances as they came on strongly in the second half. Whaley added: "I did feel that we were poor with the ball in the first half though and, if we had kept it better, maybe we would have asked them a few more questions. "I just thought that little bit of quality wasn't quite there on a difficult pitch because a good pass at the right moment could have created chances because there was space for us to attack.

"We were a lot better with the ball in the second half though and created half opportunities as well as their keeper making a great save from Ben Seymour-Shove. "We look good on the counter-attack against the top sides because we're finding that, if we defend properly, we can break quickly on them. "It was just that our choices and ability on the ball probably let us down a little bit in the first half where there were opportunities for us to counter more than we did.

"You would take a point though from being in the middle of a really tough run of fixtures and to be sitting in the dressing room after playing top of the league and being disappointed not to have won the game is another sign of what we're doing. "The point moved Spalding into ninth place with the Tulips back in action at the Sir Halley Stewart ground next Saturday when they host Sutton Coldfield.
