New Signing Liam Daly

.

DATE: WED 10 AUG 2022    BY STEVE WHITNEY
Ilkeston Bring in Experienced Defender
Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central newcomers Ilkeston Town, who began their campaign with a hard-earned point at Tamworth last Saturday, have bolstered their defence with the signing of the vastly experienced Liam Daly.

The 34-year-old joins from Vanarama National League North side Kettering Town. He had only joined the Poppies in March 2022 from Ilkeston’s league rivals Nuneaton Borough. He had arrived at Boro in October 2021 from league rivals Stourbridge where he had been since July 2021 after joining from National League side Barnet. He had signed for the Bees in January 2021 for an undisclosed fee from National League North side Gloucester City. He first joined National League club Solihull Moors in 2008 from Redditch United, having previously been at Birmingham City as a youngster. He left for Leamington in 2010, where in four seasons he made almost 200 appearances, scoring 20 goals. He helped the Brakes to win the Southern League Premier title in 2013. He returned to Moors for the start of the 2014/15 campaign and after a few weeks at Kidderminster Harriers at the start of the 2017/18 season returned to the club again before switching to Gloucester in November 2019.

Another ageing centre-half? Problem with Turner or Willock?

Re: New Signing Liam Daly

We have defenders carrying injuries. Ben Turner was injured but getting back to fitness. Marshall Willocks injured. Dan Bradley came off on Saturday with a knock. Ban O'Hanlon working his way back after picking up an injury in pre season and Billy Bennett still out with a knock picked up in pre season.
I presume Liam is in to fill the gaps but with his pedigree he could easily became a fixture with the players returning from injury fighting for their place.
Its good that the club can move so fast to secure reinforcements!

Unfortunately we have quite a few defenders out with injuries especially at centre back .Dave wants us to get off to a good start so he’s decided to bring in cover for that position .a few of us went down to training last night. Take it from me Liam Daly is a big lad. When all the squad are available there will real competition for places

With Ben Turner and Marshall Willock unfit for the Tamworth match we had to play Dan Bradley at centre back. Bradley then gets injured and Kalern Thomas had to play there, This resulted in several players having to play out of position. Because of this current injury situation it was felt that we needed to bring in a specialist centre back to enable our other players to  play in their best positions. Presumably that is why Liam Daly has been signed.
