Re: Tue 20 Sep 22: FA Cup replay: Ilkeston Town v Anstey Nomads: KO 7 45

Fenton misses 4-4 It’s in Anstey win 5-4 on penalties! A dramatic end to a tremendous game Despite Ilkeston dominating much of the game Anstey fully deserved their victory!

I always think that it's inappropriate to comment when you've not seen the game but you can understand the disappointment of Ilkeston fans. Just when we appear to have turned a corner in terms of results we lose to a team two divisions below us. Before the game it looked like we had the possibility of a FA Cup run having drawn another lower league side in the next round which makes this defeat more frustrating.
Dave has invested a lot of money in this squad of players and he could have recouped some of that with a win last night and another win in the next round.
These are the highs and lows of a football supporter. A good win at Bedford on Saturday and this defeat will be forgotten.

Re: Tue 20 Sep 22: FA Cup replay: Ilkeston Town v Anstey Nomads: KO 7 45

The comments from the stand were claiming that the players were not making an effort. This was totally the opposite to what I witnessed. The players gave their all but were undone by defensive mistakes. All three of their goals could have been avoided. The defence looked uncertain like it did the latter part of last season and maybe it needs an overhaul in the coming weeks or months. The management might even have to think about players who have been fixtures at the club and make some difficult decisions.
Back to the game! If you forget the result it was a much better performance than Saturday. Eratt-Thompson and Wilson were brilliant down the right and all the danger came from them. Gibson was just Montel again looking like he was going have to win it on his own. Remaye worked really hard as usual. Jack Thomas was good in midfield but tired after the endless running he did. Unfortunately O’Grady does not look comfortable as a wide midfielder and Troke rarely plays a forward ball although he is neat and tidy. The thing that cost us was the panicky defending from crosses and free kicks. All that being said Anstey were a well organised committed side who have a keeper who looks anything but an athlete but is one of the best keepers I have seen in a good while at the NMG. I can understand the fans being upset because they are not used to losing but some of the comments from the Clocktower were totally unacceptable! Or maybe more accurately totally wrong!

Re: Tue 20 Sep 22: FA Cup replay: Ilkeston Town v Anstey Nomads: KO 7 45

THE ROBINS PAY THE PENALTY AS ANSTEY PROGRESS AT THE DEATH

Ilkeston Town 3
Wilson 45+1
Campbell 48’ 100’

Anstey Nomads 3
Omotola 5’
Robbinson 55’
Reeve 94’

Anstey Nomads win 5-4 on penalties

Att 561

Anstey Nomads went through to the next round of the FA Cup after winning a dramatic penalty shoot out 5-4. Ilkeston had come back twice from behind with goals from Wilson and two from Campbell. The visitors strikes came from Omotola, Robbinson and Reeve.

Anstey got an early break when on five minutes Omatolani Omotola got a touch to a free kick and saw the ball loop over the stranded Saul Deeney and into the back of the net. Ilkeston fought back strongly and Conrad Logan made a good save from Jack Thomas and then Kieran Fenton headed over from a Declan Eratt-Thompson corner. The Robins were causing the Nomads down the right with Joe Wilson and Eratt-Thompson combining well. Anstey were also creating openings and Michael Reeve lobbed Deeney only to see his effort drift just wide and then Harry Wakefield shot over when in a good position.

Despite their domination of possession Ilkeston were becoming frustrated by some erratic decision making by the referee and stubbornness of the Anstey defence. However just before the break a piece of magic gave Ilkeston their opening goal. Eratt-Thompson this time surged down the left, fed Montel Gibson who flighted a sublime ball to Wilson who beat Logan with a terrific shot from the edge of the area.

Ilkeston went on took the lead straight after the break when Remaye Campbell prodded the ball home from close range. The lead only lasted seven minutes when the impressive Freddie Robbinson was given far too much to score from twenty-five yards with a well-placed shot into the corner of the goal.

Both teams now started to press for a winner. Deeney made a good save on 85 minutes but Logan made the best stop of the game when he tipped a fierce Gibson shot over the bar three minutes later. Now two tiring teams faced another thirty minutes and Anstey were first to capitalise when Reeve gave the visitors the lead on 94 minutes only for the Robins to equalise through Campbell six minutes later. All that was left was for the drama of penalties to unfold. All the penalties were converted except for the one taken by Ilkeston skipper Kieran Fenton. Anstey understandably celebrated with gusto when it dawned that they had won the tie and despite playing second fiddle for most of the tie they thoroughly deserved their victory.

Concentrating on the league will not make the nature of the defeat any easier to stomach for Ilkeston but tonight’s game produced a much better performance than Saturday. There many positives for Ilkeston but the newly appointed management team will be looking at the way Ilkeston conceded four soft goals over the two ties. The Robins will have an opportunity to put things right on Saturday when they travel to Bedford Town. They will have Dempsey Arlott-John eligible to play and may give a debut to new signing Reece Hutchinson both left sided players.

Ilkeston Town line up:- Deeney, Wilson, Bennett (Brown-Hill 91’), Thomas (Solanke 84’), Willock, Fenton, Eratt-Thompson, Troke, Campbell, Gibson and O’Grady (Wakefield 67’). Subs not used Turner and Bukowski.

Anstey Nomads line up:- Logan, Bayliss, Wolfe, Annable, Gibbens, Robbinson, Armeni, Snaith (Blackshaw 62’), Reeve, Wakefield (Hollis 85’) and Omotola (Clarke 30’ (Richardson 107’)).
Subs not used Hollis and Storey.
