Re: Sat 28th January 23 : Ilkeston v Coalville : ko 3pm

Great play by Dempsey and Lita bur Coalville clear.   Davies races out and Coalville forward goes down  Its a foul on the edge of the area.  Lucky it wasn't a penalty.  Still its a dangerous free kick and Eggleton equalises          1-1     78 mins

Wilder overhits his cross, nothing going right.  Good catch by sub keeper under pressure. Another cross with nobody there to finish.   Lita does well to put in a cross but again no finisher .

What a disappointing end. No chance of reaching the playoffs now.

Ilkeston  1  Coalville  2

How did we manage to lose that game? 1-0 ahead with ten minutes left playing against ten men and we blew it.

Ilkeston Town  1  Coalville Town  2
Ilkeston’s feint hopes of getting into the playoffs must surely be over after this disappointing defeat. Coalville were delighted to be taking a point when they equalised ten minutes from time but they then went on to win the game deep into added time. Things seemed to be going Ilkeston’s way when Coalville keeper Paul White bizarrely saw red after a fallout with his captain Joe Doyle-Charles just before half time. With the extra man Ilkeston controlled the second half but failure to turn domination into goals ultimately cost them the points.
The first half started slowly and it took 14 minutes before the first chance arrived when Joe Wilson’s effort was turned round the post by White. Leroy Lita saw an effort saved and Dempsey Arlott-John’s attempt was blocked before Ashley Chambers tested Rhys Davies at the other end with a volley. Tom McGlinchey then fired wide after cutting inside.
The second half saw Coalville having to defend and Lita gave Ilkeston the lead on 55 minutes when he showed fine control before firing home. Tim Berridge was close with a header for Coalville but it was generally all Ilkeston looking for a second goal. Ten minutes from time Ilkeston keeper Rhys Davies raced out of his goal and was yellow carded for a rash tackle. The resultant free kick was firmly headed home by Eggleton giving Coalville an unlikely leveller. Ilkeston frantically tried to find a winner and Remaye Cambell came closest when he was inches wide with a terrific shot from the edge of the area. As often happens the winning goal went in at the other end when McGlinchey scored in the 96th minute.

That was certainly a demoralising defeat which really hurt.

Were we desperately unlucky or did we get what we deserved?

Re: Sat 28th January 23 : Ilkeston v Coalville : ko 3pm

.

Most supporters would say they can accept defeat when beaten by a better side or if the other side deserved to win. Sadly neither was the case in my opinion against Coalville. It was more a case of us throwing the game away and with it any chance of making the playoffs.  Despite having a man advantage, having more possession and a goal lead in the second half we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Maybe last season’s success has spoiled us but this was a real sickener for fans. Jamie Ward said afterwards that the games when playing against ten men are the hardest to win. From the opposition point of view they just have to defend and try to stay in the game. This Coalville did and when inevitably a couple of chances came their way they took them.

The Coalville officials at half time were incandescent with rage at having a player sent off for a homophobic remark by one of their players to another of their players. They understandably concluded that the sending off would cost them a self inflicted defeat. They must have been incredibly overjoyed at full time when they stole the points.

It would be unfair to blame Rhys Davies for the defeat but his rash challenge on a Coalville player right on the wide edge of his penalty area seemed unnecessary and resulted in the equaliser.  In my opinion he was lucky not to see a red card.

If only Ilkeston had buried that big chance just before Coalville's winner and of course we could have settled for a draw. But draws are no good to us, We were right to try and win it.

DATE: SAT 28 JAN 2023   BY STEVE WHITNEY

Saturday`s Premier Division Central Round-Up
The weather finally relented and allowed a full fixture list to go ahead in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central on Saturday for the first time since the beginning of the month.

Action from Ilkeston v Coalville

And it was certainly a good day for leaders Tamworth, who extended their advantage at the top of the table to five points after they won 3-1 at Basford United and second-placed Nuneaton Borough and third-placed Rushall Olympic both dropped points.

The Lambs made their first-ever visit to Greenwich Avenue and got off to a good start when they went ahead after just 8 minutes when Dan Creaney celebrated his 100th appearance for the club by firing past Dan Preston in the Basford goal. Then, 5 minutes before the break, Eoin McKeown ran through and lobbed Preston to make it 2-0. But a minute before half-time, the hosts got themselves back in the game with a similar effort, this time Anthony Dwyer lobbing Lambs` keeper Jasbir Singh. Tamworth increased their advantage on 63 minutes when Creaney bagged his second of the game at the second attempt after Preston had parried his initial effort and the game was won.

Nuneaton dropped two home points as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Liberty Way by mid-table Stourbridge. A crowd of 764 saw a game of few chances, with the Glassboys defending well.

Rushall suffered their first defeat since December 6th – eight games – as they lost 2-0 at the Don Amott Arena against a Mickleover side who are now eighth in the table .The hosts took an early 8th-minute lead when Andy Dales curled the ball past Jake Weaver from 20 yards. Liam McDonald’s visitors largely dominated things after that but couldn’t find the final pass or finish. And on 67 minutes, Sports killed them off with a second from Joe Bateman.

Leiston jumped above the Pics into third spot after they won 1-0 at Victory Road against St Ives Town. A Will Davies header in the 28th minute had the Suffolk side ahead at half-time. Leiston `keeper Sam Donkin made a tremendous save in the first minute of stoppage time to prevent the visitors` Jonny Edwards from equalising.

Coalville Town maintained fifth spot after they won 2-1 at the Microlise New Manor Ground against a now ninth-placed Ilkeston Town. A crowd of 982 had to wait until 10 minutes into the second half for the first goal to arrive – and it went to the hosts, courtesy of some great control and cool finish from veteran striker Leroy Lita. The Ravens pulled back on level terms in the 78th minute when Jake Eggleton headed home. And just when a draw looked on the cards, Coalville pinched it with a goal from Lee McGlinchey 5 minutes into time added on at the end of the game.

Not even the highest league attendance at Top Field since April 2016 could help push sixth-placed Hitchin Town over the line as they were held to a goalless draw by neighbours Bedford Town.

Redditch United are now just a point and a place behind the Canaries after they beat neighbouring Bromsgrove Sporting 2-0 at the Trico Stadium. A terrific attendance of 1,106 saw the Reds take the lead a minute before half-time with a tremendous left-footed effort into the top corner of the net by Lewis Hudson. And 10 minutes after the restart, the hosts doubled their advantage when Bernard Mensah flicked home a Matt Sheaf cross. The 2-0 win earned Redditch the `double` over their Worcestershire rivals.

It’s getting perilous now for the bottom two, AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Hednesford Town, who both lost home games.

Diamonds were involved in an early `six-pointer` at Hayden Road against third-from-bottom Stratford Town. And a crowd of 452 saw Diamonds were beaten 2-0 by a Bards side who were reduced to ten-men on the hour-mark when Dan Lafferty was shown a second yellow card. The visitors were already one-up through Carl Dickinson’s 34th-minute effort and then added a second from Will Grocutt from the penalty spot in the 76th minute when down to ten-men.

There was a decent crowd of 499 too at the Race Stadium and they saw Hednesford go down 2-1 to fourth-from-bottom side Alvechurch, who are now ten points ahead of the Pitmen with no less than EIGHT games in hand on them and six of Diamonds! Jed Abbey put Alvechurch in front after 17 minutes, only for Todd Parker to pull Hednesford back on level terms in the 28th minute. What turned out to be the winner for Ian Long’s side came from Tyrell Skeen-Hamilton 10 minutes before half-time.

Alvechurch are now just a point behind Kings Langley after they suffered a 2-0 defeat at The Orbital Fasteners Stadium to Barwell, who moved up to 15th in the table as a result. The Canaries took the lead on the half-hour mark through Tiago Nassunculo. And they ensured the points went back to Leicestershire when Beck-Ray Enoru added a second in the 86th minute.

Needham Market slipped down to 17th after they were beaten 1-0 at Garden Walk by tenth-placed Royston Town. A penalty just before the hour-mark from Nathan Tshikuna eventually proved enough for Steve Castle’s side.

Re: Sat 28th January 23 : Ilkeston v Coalville : ko 3pm

How does the lineo know the abused player isn’t a lesbian?

You can identify as what you like these days. If I was Coalville I’d appeal it and claim that he was a lesbian at that particular point in time

Might make for some excellent headlines that. I think they’d win the appeal

Attendances not great. Any views on why not?

Re: Sat 28th January 23 : Ilkeston v Coalville : ko 3pm

Really think let's re group and let the higher earners go. It's not worked we have been lacking behind teams with a lot less money. Personally I want a non league manager , yes I like wardy but he doesn't know the non league circuit .
I suppose I will get slated but that's how I feel. I would like a team with a miles lesser wage bill who really want to play.
At the beginning of the season I thought yes we have a great team ...on paper . But we have struggled all this season.
Just goes to prove with all the experience we have in the team it hasn't worked .
So let's re group but enjoy our season  but  l can't  see us making the pa lay offs now .
I am I sounding negative ...maybe but we have a great club , great owner and great fans and that will keep us in good stead for the future .
Sorry

Mate. They had a group who wanted to play for the club. Billy, Olly, Stern, Ross, Charlie, Birdy, Tommy Williams etc. No superstars. But all steady. And not expensive either. None were considered to be good enough and have been replaced largely with journeymen  .

Watching football has it's highs and lows and we experienced on massive low on Saturday. We needed a win and we should have got the win but sometimes it's not your day.
It's a long time since I felt so devastated after a match and It took me a while to get over it. I know a lot of fans felt the same. It would have been a sickener to have drawn but to lose was a crushing blow.

Fortunately we don't have to wait long for another game. We play again Tuesday so have a chance to forget Saturday.

Match report by Harry Worgan

Last-gasp winner earns Coalville victory
Jan 30, 2023

By Harry Worgan

A 96th minute winner saw us lose 2-1 to Coalville Town on Saturday, despite the visitors being down to ten men before the break. Leroy Lita had given us the lead early in the second-half before Jake Eggleton headed in the equaliser. Then in the dying moments Tom McGlinchey struck a dramatic winner. After a tense opening 15 minutes the game suddenly burst into life. Lee Tomlin went close before Remaye Campbell saw an effort saved by Paul White. Campbell then turned provider as Joe Wilson drew another good stop from White just a minute later. Up the other end Rhys Davies was forced into action as Ashley Chambers found some space in the area. After Lita had gone close the visitors had another chance through McGlinchey as he cut inside before curling an effort wide of the far post on 25 minutes. The end to end nature of the contest continued beyond the half hour mark as Dempsey Arlott-John saw his shot blocked before Chris Robertson went close straight down the other end from a corner. The game then took a strange turn in the dying moments of the half as the assistant referee called referee Anthony Tankard over and he quickly showed a straight red card to Coalville’s White, which was quickly followed by the half time whistle.
The second-half started with Wilson avoiding a second yellow, before being quickly replaced by Dan Bradley as Coalville saw a headed effort flash wide.We then took the lead on 55 minutes. A ball into the box was controlled by Lita and he stroked it beyond the substitute ‘keeper Jake Laban.Arlott-John, who had been lively throughout, found himself in a couple of good positions but failed to deliver the end product as he fired over before overhitting a cross. Coalville then went close through Tim Berridge before the substitute saw another effort go just pass the post moments later. Another flashpoint in an already tense contest happened on 77 minutes as Davies was booked for taking out Berridge just outside the area, with plenty of protests from the visitors that it should have been a red card. From the free-kick the visitors were level as Eggleton rose highest to head in at the back post. Both teams pressed for a winner as Finn Delap slammed an effort inches wide before Chris O’Grady flicked a header over the bar. Up the other end the visitors went close through Tendai Chitiza before they found a breakthrough in the 96th minute as McGlinchey squeezed the ball home to give his side all three points.
