Re: Sat 12 August 23 : Marske United v Ilkeston Town

.
Sat 12 August 2023
Northern Premier League
Marske United  1  Ilkeston Town  3
Ilkeston opened their Northern Premier League campaign with a win at Marske-by-the-Sea in the North East. They trailed at half time but fought back to win after a delayed second half restart following an injury to match referee Glen Hart and a successful appeal for a substitute official.
The first half was fast and furious with both sides having chances following corner kicks but there were not many clear goalscoring opportunities. The best chance fell to Marske when Doncaster Rovers loanee Tavonga Kuleya’s shot was blocked and Jason Kennedy’s follow up was volleyed wide.  It looked like the first period would end goalless until the 41st minute when Robins keeper Matthew Yates bought down Edward Church and Nathan Thomas converted the penalty to give the Seasiders the lead. The same player nearly scored again a minute later with a cracking effort just wide and Ilkeston’s Jamie Walker also saw a shot whistle wide as the even first half ended with a flurry of action.
The second half saw Ilkeston take control with substitute Jack Tolley making an immediate impact. Tayo Alexander-Tucker tested Marske keeper Nathan Harker before Ilkeston’s early pressure told following a corner. Walker rose highest and his powerful header levelled the scores on 54 minutes.  Ilkeston continued to dominate and on the hour it was 2-1 with a goal lashed in by Henri Wilder.  A thumping drive by Thomas nearly brought Marske an equaliser and they then went even closer when first Yates saved and Tolley cleared the follow up off the line. Marske’s misfortune was compounded when Ilkeston went down the other end and made in 3-1 when the  unfortunate Harker misjudged a high ball and put it into his own goal on 70 minutes. Marske couldn’t find a way back and it could have been 4-1 when Walker had a goal disallowed for offside. In added time Harker made a super save from Declan Eratt-Thompson. Walker back heeled the loose ball goalwards but it was cleared off the line.

Re: Sat 12 August 23 : Marske United v Ilkeston Town

Highlights from yesterday's game. We were much the better team in the second half and could have scored one or two more, but they had 2 gilt-edged chances in the first half and could easily have gone in 2 or 3 up at the break ...

And you can make your own minds up on our 3rd goal! The Marske players and management team weren't too happy, convinced it was a foul on their keeper.

Re: Sat 12 August 23 : Marske United v Ilkeston Town

.
I thought both of the referees did alright ie they were reasonably consistent and fair. I was told that the first referee's father was a Football League referee.
Good half time substitution by Gary Hayward as Tolley made a real difference with his speed and taking on defenders. A  good idea also to bring on Hanson to shore things up when we were 3-1 ahead. Their keeper was lucky not to be red carded following his protests after his own goal. I was impressed with Barrows who we've got on a three month loan. He shirked nothing and played like he was a regular in the team. The whole defence looked solid and Eratt-Thompson and Dixon did well in midfield. We saw what Walker could do in the second half. Alfreton's loss is our gain. He's going to score and make goals for us. Marske are not one of the better teams so it was important that we won. It will be much tougher against Gainsborough Trinity who made the playoffs last season.
