Bank Holiday Mon 28 Aug 2023
Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town 2 Whitby Town 4
It turned out to be a doubly disappointing Bank Holiday weekend for Ilkeston after two four goal defeats. They were given a lesson in finishing by the Seasiders who had less of the ball but took their chances.
The opening period was scrappy but Whitby went ahead on 8 minutes when Lewis Hawkins bundled the ball in after Yates had saved the original header. Ilkeston hit back with two attempts by Jordan Hallam which cleared the bar. Whitby keeper Shane Bland saved efforts by Declan Howe and Mitchell Woakes before Luke Cox found the net with a header which was disallowed. Despite having had more possession Ilkeston went two behind on 44 minutes when Adam Gell capitalised on a mistake by Cox. If that wasn’t disappointing enough Jerome Greaves added a third Whitby goal in added time.
The second half saw Ilkeston push hard to get back into the game and Declan Eratt-Thompson made it 3-1 after 64 minutes. The goal lifted Ilkeston and they were very close to a second goal three minutes later when Henri Wilder’s shot struck the post. Just when the possibility of a comeback looked on Whitby scored again through Greaves. Ilkeston were then denied what looked like a clear penalty when Eratt-Thompson was clattered. On 85 minutes Jamie Hanson’s header was cleared off the line as Whitby rode their luck. Ilkeston finally scored again on 90 minutes from a Wilder header but Whitby held on for what looked like a convincing win.

It was so frustrating yesterday. In front of a decent crowd we could have done better. That was a winnable game and we concede four goals. Fair play to Whitby who took their chances. The two goals just before half time killed us. If we were blinded with false optimism by our first three performances we now know that winning games in this league isn't easy. On the bright side, we’re not getting outplayed, we’re just giving goals away, eight in the last two matches. And it seems that we’re totally reliant on Jamie Walker for goals. Our best attacks in the second half involved defenders Henri Wilder and Kieran Fenton. What a pity Wilder’s shot hit the post instead of going in. It could have been a grandstand finish. We’ve not gone from being a good side to a poor side. The last three games have been a reality check. Our present mid table position is probably a true indicator of where we are likely to be throughout the season. There’s no reason why we can’t win as many matches as we lose. We get a break for the league next Saturday with a difficult FA cup tie at Mickleover. With Mickleover unbeaten and us losing our last three, no one expects us to win that one.

After the match one of the Whitby officials said to me. This is one of the nicest grounds we've been to and the food is top notch. Not only the best food but proper prices unlike some grounds where a burger costs £7.
Well done Patrick Nally and all the catering staff.
