Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

.
Sat 16 September  2023
Northern Premier League
Basford  0  Ilkeston Town 1
A goal by Zak Goodson on his return was enough to give Ilkeston the points in a close fought contest. Basford pressed hard for a leveller towards the end but Ilkeston’s defenders held on to give new manager Ian Deakin a first win.
Basford started well and early chances fell to their former Ilkeston players Remaye Campbell and Jack Thomas but both were off target. It took 26 minutes before Ilkeston had their first real opportunity when Tyrell Waite broke free but keeper Kieran Preston raced out to stop his effort. This was followed by a great block by Peter Dearle to deny Goodson then just before half time Ilkeston were rescued by Kieran Fenton’s last ditch tackle on Brodie Litchfield.
Ilkeston made a better start to the second half and were rewarded when Goodson fired home after good play by L’Varn Brandy just after the hour mark. Basford responded and a Thomas effort was deflected over the bar. Brandy then won Ilkeston a free kick on the edge of the area but Fenton’s free kick was diverted for a corner. In a frantic final five minutes of normal time Ilkeston keeper Matt Yates had plenty to deal with and Ethan Cartwright, Tyler Dacres and Charlie Wakefield all had chances charged down as Basford gave it their best shot. It was then all hands to the pump in the seven minutes of added time as Basford increased the pressure but were unable to break Ilkeston’s resistance.
Defeat was the last straw for Basford owner Chris Munroe who promptly fired his manager Steve Kittrick following their poor start to the season.

Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

If Zak Goodson is selected for our next game it will be his 50th start for Ilkeston Town. Has he done enough to get a place in the starting line up? Something tells me he might have!

Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

I thought Zak did alright. He looks stronger now and comes to life when he's on the ball plus he got the all important goal. I think this squad is good enough to keep us mid table maybe better as they start to gel. Mid table would be acceptable to me in our first season in the NPL. Don't forget Step 3 is a new level for Ian Deakin who was managing st Step 5 two years ago. I was impressed with Charlie Wakefield who has now added a toughness to his skill level and looked like Basford's main man.

Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

Interesting game never looked like we was going to let one in but didn't look like scoring till brandy came on.

He did more in 20 odd minutes than most of our players have done in the last 4 games.

Zak looks a different player than when we 1st have him. He's keeping the ball more and playing the way he is facing.

We are still missing a centre forward. TW missed 2 sitters

On another note where was perch and Tyson. If it's going to be play one miss a couple we should let them go and let's us the money on proper players

17/9/2023 6:21 PM  #54

Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

I heard from Zane that Perch is with his dad, who is seriously ill. Don't know where Tyson was. Yes, we need a big lad up top who can score a few goals. I'd persevere with Waite (who had a good first half against Worksop last week) and Tyson for a while. Let this bunch of players get used to playing together.

Walker's really gone off the boil in the last couple of games, maybe it's being asked to play in different positions - left wing/left back/centre forward. Zak Goodson doesn't change for me - he does very little and you barely notice him in a game and then he pops up with a goal - from long range or short range. Good knack to have is that.

Brandy did look sharp when he came on - he reminded me of Arlott-John's debut at Coalville last season (Wardy's first game in charge). The less said about 'the Brandy bunch', Brandy's 15 or so friends who we briefly had on our Supporters bus after the game, the better.

And I thought Luke Cox played well, a really commited performance. Good reaction to being dropped. It was a better performance generally from the defence. It'll be a good test against Lancaster next week.

Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

Was a dire game first half what I got to see if it .
Second it got better .
I did think Walker didn't have a good game as in with the ball at his feet BUT he was the only one winning headers up front . This we have been lacking for ages, we just can't to get a player who head or hold the ball up front .
Brandy did look very lively when he game with some very clever ball control
Defence did what was asked of them defended well.
A very much 3pts needed and a bit of a morale boost.

Re: Sat 16th Sep 23 : Basford Utd v Ilkeston Town

A mention for Kieran Fenton. I thought he had an outstanding game, He gave everything and hardly had the strength to leave the field at full time. Luke Cox also did well at the back and as always Dec Eratt-Thompson gave 100 per cent. Regarding Jamie Walker, I thought he had a decent game, As Kev said, he won loads of headers and kept battling despite being closely marked.
