GOAL.    we've snatched it.     Dixon finds the top corner.          3-2

My mistake. Ben Starkie was the scorer.  What a superb strike like an arrow into the very top left hand corner of the net to settle the game.

Not a good performance but we got the win. The pitch was awful. It was almost impossible to play decent football on such a pitch and against such physical opponents.

Re: Saturday 4th Nov 23 : Atherton v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

.
I suppose "all's well that ends well." There was a definitely a feeling of euphoria among supporters at the end after Starkie's cracking last gasp winner but we got out of Jail. We didn't play well but that could be blamed on the conditions and the fact that Atherton were very physical. It was really heavy going and energy sapping. Alex Marshall in particular received some rough treatment and showed creditable restraint. Alex and Tom both had decent games I thought and so did Larell King. Deaks wasn't at the game  through illness so we probably won't get any after match comments but we'll have to play much better against Warrington our next opponents.
Ourselves and most other teams have now played 14 matches so we are now 1/3 way through the season. We have 22 points from our 14 games and are 9th in the table. If this rate of points is maintained we would have 66 points at the end of the season which would be a top half finish.

Sat 4 November 2023
Northern Premier League
Atherton Collieries  2  Ilkeston Town  3
Ilkeston snatched victory from the jaws of defeat thanks to Jamie Walker’s penalty and Ben Starkie’s bonfire night rocket in truly awful playing conditions.
After so much rain it was surprising that the pitch was passed fit to play on but Ilkeston made an early breakthrough with Alex Marshall heading in at the near post from debutant Larell King’s long throw-in. Marshall then created an opportunity for Declan Eratt-Thompson whose shot was too high. Marshall’s effort from the edge of the box then brought a good save from Nico Defreitas-Hansen. Ilkeston almost got a second but were denied by Dylan Moonan’s brilliant header off the line and over the bar. The nearest to an Atherton goal was a Lewis Mansell header which glanced the post on 39 minutes but the host’s only real threat was from set pieces so Ilkeston were comfortable at half time albeit with just the one goal lead.
Three minutes into the second half the lead was lost when Collieries defender Dylan Thompson powered home a header from a corner. Alex Marshall was close with a header for Ilkeston but Atherton were starting to grow in confidence in the heavy conditions and a Nathan Caine header brought a fine save by Matt Yates. With 15 minutes left Atherton went ahead with another goal from a corner through Enoch Lusiama and Ilkeston looked in danger of losing. But on 81 minutes they levelled when Eratt-Thompson was fouled in the area and Walker sent Defreitas-Hansen the wrong way from the spot. Atherton sensed an injustice and pushed forward putting Ilkeston under some late pressure by forcing several corners. They then had a vociferous penalty appeal rejected by the referee who instead booked Nathan Caine for diving. In added time the game looked destined to end in a draw but right at the death Ben Starkie hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner to give Ilkeston all three points.

Re: Saturday 4th Nov 23 : Atherton v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

Still not sure how we won on Saturday, but it was a strike worthy of winning a game (good throw-in from King as well - that will be a useful weapon for us) ...

Atherton Collieries very fair Match Report

https://athertoncollieries.co.uk/report-colls-2-3-ilkeston-town/

Report: Colls 2-3 Ilkeston Town

Ben Starkie scored a showstopping stoppage-time winner as Atherton Collieries were beaten 3-2 by llkeston Town at the Skuna Stadium.
Dylan Thompson and Enoch Lusiama each registered their first goals in Colls colours, but ultimately found themselves on the losing side as Alex Marshall, Jamie Walker and substitute Starkie all netted for Ilkeston. The visitors took the lead early on, with Marshall rising first to meet Larell King’s looping long throw, before guiding the ball over Nico Defreitas-Hansen for the game’s opening goal. The Colls did begin to grow into the first half in the latter stages, however, and their best chance came as Lewis Mansell beat Matt Yeates in the air, only to see his effort cannon out of play via the goalpost.
Shortly after the break, the equalising goal would come, as centre-back Thompson headed home from a corner to notch his first Atherton Collieries goal in just his second start since his move from Nantwich Town. It was a first headed goal of the competitive season.
Another corner, and another first-time scorer, made it comeback complete for Colls, with debutant Lusiama eventually turning the ball home from close range after an almighty scramble in the six-yard box. He looks primed to be a terrace favourite.
But the pendulum was set to swing once more, as Walker first levelled things at 2-2 from 12 yards, before Starkie’s 92nd-minute strike went crashing in off the crossbar in a final, dramatic twist. The majority of Skuna was plunged into stunned silence while the pocket of Derbyshire visitors quite rightly celebrated the wonder strike passionately. David Chadwick’s men had moments earlier been denied a penalty of their own when Thompson went down much to the frustration of the natives.
A much improved home display in particularly testing conditions that the supporters appreciated wholeheartedly at full time. Should the lads have got something out of the game? Most definitely but they must now dust themselves down for a trip to Worksop Town next Saturday. Check social media outlets for travel details. #FollowCollsAway
The Colls: Nico Defreitas-Hansen, Josh Solomon-Davies, Josh Askew, Ben Rydel, Dylan Thompson, Jordan Boon, Joe Adams, Sidi Fofana, Lewis Mansell (Enoch Lusiama 56’), Harvey Gregson (Dylan Moonan 85’), Oli Patrick (Nathan Caine 67’) - Subs (Unused): Lewis Coulton, Jordan Fagbola
Colls Mon of the Match Sponsored by Atherton Accountancy Ltd: Josh Solomon-Davies (Sponsored by Neptune Wealth Management) - Solid in defence and enterprising in attack.

Re: Saturday 4th Nov 23 : Atherton v Ilkeston : Ko 3pm

Awful conditions on an awful pitch - it was like a Sunday afternoon park pitch. You get all sorts of different tests in a season and we did show real character.  The cameraman/editor obviously thinks they should have had a penalty in the second half and doesn't even include the incident from which we got a penalty. Unusual for Perch and Cox to be undone by 2 crosses.

Brief highlights ...

it was actually good to see that the ref wasnt fooled by the diving from their players , fair play to him.
