Ilkeston relied heavily on the bravery and heroics of goalkeeper Matt Yates as well as some desperate defending to achieve a hard earned 5th away win. Trinity threw everything at Ilkeston in the final quarter but Yates was superb and was not to be beaten. The game was decided with a goal from the half way line by Jamie Walker who spotted keeper Ben Bottomley off his line and his audacious lob dropped perfectly into the net.
The first half was a tame affair with only a few serious chances created. Ilkeston had the better of the early exchanges and Walker’s stunning strike on 24 minutes was a wake up call for Gainsborough but Ilkeston’s defence superbly marshalled by skipper James Perch were comfortable throughout this period. Trinity’s best chance came just before half time when Dylan Cogil’s header flew just wide.
The second half was a different story with Trinity having a real go at rescuing the game. Just two minutes in, Declan Howe had a real opportunity when put through by Justin Iwobi. Howe raced towards goal and was one on one with Yates but Ilkeston’s keeper won the duel. Five minutes later Ben Starkie had a similar opportunity for Ilkeston and this time Bottomley made a fine block. The loose ball fell to Declan Eratt-Thompson who fired goalwards but Bottomley was there again to save. At the other end Howe was spectacularly denied by Yates who turned his shot round the post. Yates was soon in action again saving Ash Jackson’s low drive. With time running out Trinity intensified their efforts and Ilkeston were forced to defend in numbers. On 84 minutes Yates produced an outstanding save to deny Howe from close range and right at the end of the seven allotted minutes of added time Ilkeston survived an almighty goalmouth scramble which saw two Gainsborough attempts blocked by Ilkeston bodies, a penalty appeal, a goal line clearance by Larell King and another brave save by Yates.

This team may not score many goals but they certainly know how to defend a lead. Undeniable commitment in the last two games have earned us four good away points. Yates and the whole team really put a shift in and let’s give a deserved mention to James Perch who is pure class.

He was being treated on the pitch for a long time after the end of the game. so it was obviously a very serious injury.

Well done to Ryan our physio, he's one of the best.
