When Gresley’s Moat Ground was declared unfit for a second time after a 2 30pm pitch inspection it was quickly agreed to switch the tie to Ilkeston for a 7 45 kickoff on the same day. But despite Ilkeston having home advantage it was Gresley who progressed to the next round. Several of Ian Deakin’s players were rested for the Workington fixture to come on Saturday. Mitchell Leivers made his debut in goal for Ilkeston.
The first half produced few chances with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested until Liam Loughlan’s effort on 20 minutes which bought a good save by Greasley’s Harvey Woodward. Ilkeston got the ball in the net from a Tyrell Waite header on the half hour after some great play by L’Varn Brandy but an offside flag was raised. Just before half time Gresley had their best chance from a free kick just outside the area. Martyn Smyth tried to catch out Leivers at his near post but the Ilkeston keeper responded with a good save. This was followed by a decent Brandy effort for Ilkeston which bought a tame first half to an end on a high note.
The second half started with more urgency and Waite was close with a header just three minutes in. On 56 minutes Micah Jebbison volleyed wide and a Brandy free kick almost sneaked in at the far post as Ilkeston pressed but it was Gresley who broke the deadlock through Nathan Banton firing home from close range. A good effort by Waite was pushed round the post by Woodward and Ilkeston were closer to an equaliser when first Loughlan and then Jebbison had shots blocked in quick succession. With five minutes remaining there was a penalty shout when Jebbison went down in the area under challenge but he was booked for simulation. The same player almost rescued the game for Ilkeston on 90 minutes when his effort hit Woodward and went narrowly wide.
