Marske Exit the League

Marske United - Club Statement

Dear Football Friends & FamilyAs many of you are aware Marske United Football Club faced the real threat of extinction. Our village football team has punched above its weight for many years, achieving exceptional success along the way, but unfortunately stretched itself too far and lived beyond its means.
The price of a rapid rise through the leagues is exponential for a volunteer ran football club.  Ever increasing travel, wage and maintenance costs, alongside greater infrastructure requirements and the pressures on unpaid volunteers are just some of the many challenges faced by non-league football clubs throughout the region and across the country.
These issues combined with our own unique circumstances such as floodlight sabotage, pitch related postponements, and material delays in last summer’s essential drainage work which prevented any pre-season home friendly revenue ultimately brought an existential threat to Marske United, which has been fighting to survive from week to week.In all our efforts, our number one objective has always been to try and save the football club.
At one stage that did not look possible, and we apologise unreservedly for how events have transpired, both in recent months and over the past year. The club is sorry for how the situation has been handled from our perspective.
However, today we can confirm that we have ultimately been successful in our mission. Thanks to the fundraising efforts, and significant financial contributions from the new directors, we now have enough funds to service and stabilise the critical concerns needed to ensure our football club can continue to exist. If this money had not been raised, then Marske United would not have been allowed to return in any familiar name, shape or form at any level, or play at Mount Pleasant ever again.
The club has been saved. However, our second objective was to save our season.Unfortunately, despite our best efforts on and off the pitch, we will not be able to achieve this after exhausting every available option to raise the £120,000 in funds required to get the First Team to the end of the season.
The ongoing weekly and monthly costs to operate at this level are just too great, even with the implementation of further significant cost saving measures to reduce the deficit. At this stage any further attempts to continue down this path would ultimately jeopardize objective one, as there are no guarantees we would be successful in our efforts, and these would most likely be detrimental to our main mission, leaving the club with no funds, nor future.
However, our collective efforts have not been in vain. All of the money raised so far will provide our community club with a solid foundation to rejoin the football pyramid at lower-level next season where space is available. This will provide Marske United with a platform to rebuild again properly in terms of organisation and infrastructure, and the club will survive.
Thus, with a heavy heart the club informed the Northern Premier League and the FA of our decision to withdraw from the Northern Premier League Premier Division which has been accepted.
We would like to place on record our thanks to all official stakeholders for their assistance, guidance, and support behind the scenes, which is often unseen by most. Discussions as to which league the Marske United First Team will play in next season are already underway. A final decision will be ratified by the FA at the end of the season.
The Marske United Junior Teams will continue to play this season. We also plan to move our remaining Marske United Reserve Team fixtures from New Marske Sports Club to Mount Pleasant to continue to provide weekly football for the community, free of charge, as per North Riding League regulations. This will ensure that the facilities at Mount Pleasant are well-maintained ahead of the return of league football for the First Team next season
We would like to thank all the players, coaches, volunteers, partners, other clubs, but most importantly the fans for all their countless efforts and unwavering support. For now, there will be break, but this not a goodbye by any means, and as always, we will be back!
Sea...Sea...Seasiders
Marske United Football Club

League Statement regarding the Resignation of Marske United
On 3rd January 2024, the Northern Premier League received a letter of resignation from Marske United FC along with a signed motion voted upon by the club’s committee present at a meeting held on 2nd January confirming the decision to resign from membership of the NPL.
The League has been in regular dialogue with Mark Hastings-Long, chairman of Marske United, providing help and guidance. Mr Hastings-Long has been working hard to find a way to address the issues facing the club and has provided regular updates to the league. However, the latest financial information shows the accumulated monthly losses mean that the club cannot realistically complete the 2023/24 playing season. The league is disappointed and sad to lose a member in such circumstances and thanks the club for their attention and efforts over the past few weeks. The NPL board will convene in the coming days and no further statement will be issued until after that meeting.

The above statement by the Northern Premier League makes it sound like they played no part in Marske's exit.

Re: Marske Exit the League

Looks like Ilkeston, Morpeth, and Matlock are the big losers - all losing 6 points. We go from a point ahead of Workington to 5 points behind. We really are looking over our shoulders now. Wouldn't be so worrying if our form was a bit better.

Bamber Bridge, Basford, Atherton, Workington. Gainsborough, Ashton and Guiseley all benefit from Marske’s withdrawal as they were beaten by them and so lose no points.

I think Ashton beat Marske in August and so lose 3 points?

Adam Boyes has scored 18 goals for Marske. (13 in the league).

Wonder where he will go.

Tin Shed Titans @TinShedTitans
Club legend, best goalscorer we will ever see wear yellow and blue, and stuck by the club until the end when almost everyone else had given up on us. Never be forgotten what this man has done for us. Hopefully plays for us again one day

Re: Marske Exit the League

I keep being asked why the League haven't yet provided a league table with Marske's results removed.

I think that they have to wait for the FA  to formally approve the decision. This should take place at their next scheduled meeting.

Re: Marske Exit the League

Whilst I wish Marske all the best I can’t help thinking that they have come out of this situation rather well from a financial perspective.

From what I have heard they were living beyond their means with most of their players being on contracts which meant it was difficult for them to reduce their weekly outgoings. As such they were losing money every week. Hence the attempt to raise money through a share issue and the calculation of £120,000 needed to complete the season.
I have heard that the £25,000+ they received through Just Giving has enabled them to clear their immediate debts and restart next season debt free albeit at a lower level..It must be very unusual for a club that is not going into Administration to resign from the league this way.

Ilkeston, Matlock and Morpeth are worst affected by Marske’s withdrawal each losing six points.
Basford, Bamber, Atherton, Workington, Gainsborough and Guiseley are the biggest winners because they lose no points

The teams that have played an away game against Marske have suffered a loss of around a thousand pounds in travel costs for a match that no longer counts

Here’s another question: Could the players on contract claim their wages till the end of their contracts?
Apparentley the Club tried to get the contracted players to agree to lower wages but most of them refused.

Re: Marske Exit the League

The Northern Premier League have now issued the following statement

Further Statement: Marske United
 about 3 hours ago. By James Gordon

At a meeting on Friday 5th January the League Management Committee met to discuss recent events at Marske United FC.
The board ratified the decision to accept the resignation of the football club from membership of the NPL. FA NLS Regulation 5.5.3 is therefore applied:NLS Regulation 5.5.3(a)

In cases where the vacancy is created prior to the end of the Playing Season, at Steps 1 and 2 the vacancy will be filled by the best ranked Club in a relegation position at the end of the Regular Season, eligible of being reprieved in that same division. In the event of there being more vacancies than Clubs eligible to be reprieved, such vacancy or vacancies will be filled by Clubs eligible to be reprieved in the Competition’s other division(s) on a points per match ratio.

At Steps 3 to 6, the vacancies shall be filled at the sole discretion of the Committee.
(b) Where, prior to the end of the Playing Season, a Club notifies its decision to resign from its League with immediate effect or where a Club is removed from the League for any reason, then the playing record of that Club will be expunged and a vacancy is created on the date the resignation or removal is formally recorded by that League.(c) In all such cases that Club is treated as a relegated Club and the vacancy will be filled in accordance with 5.5.3(a) above.

The playing record of the club will be expunged and published from 5pm on Friday 12th January prior to the weekend’s fixtures, with the revised league table showing Marske United in 22nd place with zero points.Any decision around any potential reprieves is made by the FA as part of the club allocations process in May.

We wish Marske United well as they look to re-build at a lower step and allow the continuation of a football club established in 1956.
