Some days are diamonds and this was such a day for Ilkeston's travelling supporters. Deaks told us that the team would come good and today they showed us what they are capable of against one of the best teams in the league. We matched them all over the pitch with outstanding performances by every single player. Every player deserves praise but I'll just mention five. Dixon was unbelievable. Yates was incredible in the last 20 minutes. Walker was back to his best. Eratt-Thompson was absolutely outstanding. Tom Cursons had a fine match. Not everything came off for him but he kept battling away and causing problems for the Worksop defence.
In my opinion our best performance of the season,

Sat 13th January 2024
Northern Premier League
Worksop Town 1 Ilkeston Town 2
Ilkeston produced probably their best performance of the season to stun promotion contenders Worksop Town. The hosts had only been beaten at home once in the last two seasons but goals by L’Varn Brandy and Jamie Walker gave Ilkeston a deserved win. Keeper Matthew Yates played a big part in keeping out Worksop’s high scoring attack when the hosts threw everything at Ilkeston in the closing stages
A fast start saw both teams look for an early goal. Jay Rollins fired wide for Worksop in the opening minute and Walker had two quick fire efforts blocked inside the area for Ilkeston. Jordan Burrow glanced a header wide of the post before Ilkeston replied through Tom Cursons who forced Seb Malkowski to save at full stretch. Worksop went ahead with a looping header from Burrow on 11 minutes but Ilkeston levelled two minutes later when Brandy was perfectly placed to prod home a cross at the far post. The best move of the game involving Cursons and Connor Dixon ended with Malkowski denying Dixon a spectacular finish with an outstretched foot. Malkowski was soon in action again pushing Tom Marshall’s free kick round the post.
On 53 minutes Worksop had a goal disallowed for offside. Ilkeston went up the other end and Walker headed them into the lead. Cursons nearly doubled the lead when he got past Malkowski but he couldn’t find the net from the tight angle. Worksop made a big effort to rescue the game in the final 20 minutes and Yates and the Ilkeston defence had to be at their best. On 83 minutes Yates made two unbelievable saves to deny Rollins. Luke Hall then had a chance but put his shot wide before Yates did really well to hold on to Alecs Starcenko’s low drive. Deep into added time Ilkeston’s keeper denied Burrow with yet another outstanding save after Vaughn Redford’s back heel had created the opportunity.. Ilkeston threatened to make the game safe on several occasions with counter attacks but Malkowski like Yates was in superb form between the posts.

An away day on the Supporters bus
We made the journey to Worksop hoping for a decent performance but with no realistic expectation of getting a result.
The supporters bus arrived in Worksop around 12 and the majority of supporters got off in town for drinks.
The supporters who stayed on the bus to the ground had to wait for the turnstiles to be opened but when Deaks arrived he spent a good half hour talking to us and answered every question put to him. Of course Deaks was more optimistic than us but after listening to him we were more hopeful than before.
Once inside we were looked after by the friendly Worksop stewards who showed us where everything was ie bar, food outlets, toilets, club shop. This is non-league - all very friendly.
New signing Lindon Meikle was in the team and by 3pm there were 930 spectators in the ground creating a great atmosphere of anticipation.
Ten minutes in and the team were playing much better than expected. Unfortunately we concede a goal but we hit back straight away and confidence is restored. If anything we are the better side and we go in level at half time. The feeling is that we've given a good account of ourselves so far regardless of how the game may finish.
But the second half sees us take the lead with Walker's header. Unbelievably we're ahead and deservedly so. With nothing to lose Worksop make a real effort to turn the game round. We have to defend but Yates is inspired and makes save after save. It's full time and we've caused a big upset.
There is so much elation on the supporters bus for the journey home. There's loud singing to pop songs and even a conga down the aisle. What a great day Saturday turned out to be

Spot on John. Everybody was buzzing on the bus back. So much sweeter when you think you've got no chance of winning.
