Next Saturday is the match we’ve been looking forward to for some time against our friends from just down the road; Basford United.
Basford are in a relegation fight but like us they have won their last two matches and will be looking make it three. They also have several ex Ilkeston players who will be keen to do well so a close fought encounter is in prospect. We also welcome back our former coach James Jepson .

With two league wins and a Notts Senior Cup win at Carlton behind them Basford must be full of confidence. However that confidence will be tested tonight when the Ambers take on league leaders Radcliffe at Greenwich Avenue.
A defeat would bring them down to earth but if they were to avoid defeat they would come to the NMG with high hopes. I'm pretty sure Deaks and his management team will be watching the Radcliffe match with interest.

Our next two matches give us an opportunity to banish any lingering relegation fears.
If we can pick up maximum points against Basford and Stafford Rangers we can start looking upwards rather than downwards
The relegation battle :
Bradford have only won three league matches. They beat Morpeth and Ilkeston early in the season. After beating Ilkeston 4-1 they went 13 games without a win until they surprisingly beat Macclesfield 4-3. Since then they lost lost their last six.
Atherton have won four league matches. They have beaten Bradford twice, FC United and Workington.
Bradford and Atherton have showed no sign that they might put a winning run together.
Stafford, like Bradford had a couple of early season wins. They then went a massive 18 league games without a win which saw them drop to the bottom of the league. Since then they have beaten Gainsborough and Matlock. I can’t see once proud Stafford Rangers not putting up a fight to stay in this league.

This Saturday's fixtures: (20th Jan 24)
Atherton v Guiseley
Bamber Bridge v Marine
Hyde v Bradford
Ilkeston v Basford
Macclesfield v Radcliffe
Matlock v Gainsborough
Morpeth v Ashton
Stafford Rangers v Worksop
Whitby v Lancaster
Workington v Warrington
The two teams closest to Junction 26 of the M1 Motorway meet at The NMG. The form book often goes out of the window for games like this. After two wins, Basford's bubble was burst by Radcliffe on Tuesday night whereas Ilkeston go into the match following big perfomances against FC United and Worksop.
The match of the day has to be Macclesfield v Radcliffe. There could easily be a 5000+ crowd and I'm taking Macclesfield to win.
Guiseley and Hyde will expect to win against their drop zone opponents Atherton and Bradford
Gainsborough Trinity will want to pull away from the relegation area and they just might get a result at underachievers Matlock Town.
Morpeth v Ashton looks like a stalemate and Marine may find Bamber who have only lost once at home, a bidge too far
Stafford Rangers will be hoping for an Ilkeston win and a victory for themselves as they try to reduce the five points gap between themslves and Basford but Worksop will probably be too strong for them.
Whitby will just be hoping that their match is on and in the battle of the "W-r-ingtons" - Warrington Rylands could lose their unbeaten away record at Workington.

.Really hope we can win this one. It won’t be easy. Basford have more experienced players than us but our recent form must give us the edge. The signing of Tom Cursons has made a big difference to our performances in our last three matches and our most recent signing, Lindon Meikle also looks to be a good one following his debut at Worksop. We now have two experienced players in Perch and Meikle to make up for the loss of Wilder and Fenton.Dixon and Eratt-Thompson have been on fire in the last two matches and with Walker seemingly back to his best we now look capable of scoring goals. Add to that the fact that we have one of the best keepers in the league and the feeling is that we’ve now got a team who could possibly make a late challenge for a playoff spot. What a difference from a few weeks ago when it was all doom and gloom after four defeats on the bounce.
Last season when Basford came to the NMG only a late goal from Remaye Campbell saved us from defeat. We can be sure that Basford will raise their game again for this clash so I think we can expect a close game.

.
Could be a decent Gate on Saturday if Basford bring a few supporters like they did last season when we were both in the Southern League.
Last season when Basford came to the NMG the gate was 1001 but that was Boxing Day.
Both teams have shown improved form of late so that could bring a few extra in.
Ilkeston won the reverse fixture at Basford with the solitary goal scored by Zak Goodson watched by 702 fans (Basford's highest attendance this season)

Sometimes it's harder to win when you're expected to do so. Especially when playing in front of a big home crowd. Ilkeston v Shepshed (to clinch promotion) comes to mind.
We had a good turnout for the last home match against FC United and we followed it up with a top notch performance at Worksop. Hopefully that will translate into another decent crowd tomorrow.
After Ian Deakin's openness at the Fans Forum and two much improved team performances, a feeling of togetherness and optimism is now much more prevalent among supporters and a win against Basford will maintain the momentum.

Looking at tomorrow's fixtures and the league table:
Atherton v Guiseley
Bamber Bridge v Marine
Hyde v Bradford
Ilkeston v Basford
Macclesfield v Radcliffe
Matlock v Gainsborough
Morpeth v Ashton
Stafford Rangers v Worksop
Whitby v Lancaster
Workington v Warrington
A win tomorrow can lift us one place to 11th if Morpeth lose. We will then be back on 36 points (the total we had before Marske's results were expunged)
If we were to lose tomorrow; then Bamber Bridge, Workington and Matlock could go above us if they win.
What I would love is a cracking game and Tyrell Waite scoring the winner in added time.

Basford’s away record: P12, W1, D3, L8, F11, A23, Points 6
Their away record is not brilliant but they have earned three very creditable draws on the road at Macclesfield, Warrington and Morpeth.

It's Matchday
and we're looking for a 3rd win on the bounce.
Standing in our way are local rivals Basford United.
Basford’s away record may not be great : P12, W1, D3, L8, F11, A23, Points 6
But our home record is nothing to shout about. P12, W5, D2, L5. F23, A17, Points 17
Only Basford , Stafford, Bradford and Atherton have lost more home matches

Great effort by Dixon but Preston tips it round the post. poor defending by Basford and Welker puts Ilkeston ahead on 4 minutes. 1-0.

Basford have recovered their composure after the shaky start. Marshall has to concede a corner which is cleared. Now Basford concede a corner. Cox header from the corner is over the bar. 1-0. 12 mins

Ilkeston are looking the better side. No threat from Basford so far. Ilkeston are piling up the corners. Brandy is our main threat. Saving tackle by Fenton, It's corner after corner just now

Blatant handball by Basford defender after Brandy ties him in knots but it's not given.
half time. 3-0.
Chris Munroe is not happy
But everything could change. There's 45 minutes to play and Basford have to be better.
