Great tackle by Wafula in Ilkeston's penalty area. it had to be good and it was.  Great tackle by Dec  Guiseley are pressing. Good counter by Ilkeston just fails.  Cursons effort saved by Battersbie.      1-1.     67mins

Guisley cross shot hits the inside of the post and Yates is able to gather the rebound. A real let off.
Now an Ilkeston corner.

Saving tackle by Dec.  Free kick Guiseley in good position.  Great defending. Chance for Murphy but he skies it. Ilkeston sub to waste time.  Another Guiseley free kick.  Guiseley overhead effort but Yates saves.

Ilkeston Town have moved up to twelth in the table after todays impressive win and are mathematically certain of avoiding relegation unless of course they belatedly fall foul of the Financial Fair Play rules!

Re: Sat 23rd March - Guiseley v Ilkeston - ko 3pm

.
Sat 23rd March 2024
Northern Premier League
Guiseley  1  Ilkeston  Town 2
A goal in each half by Tom Cursons was enough to give Ilkeston a victory which avenged a 4-1 defeat at the NMG earlier in the season and put a dent in Guiseley’s playoff hopes.
The swirling wind caused problems but both sides produced early chances. Cursons had an opportunity for Ilkeston at the far post but put his shot into the side netting.  Ilkeston then had a penalty shout rejected when Cursons was put through by Connor Dixon before going down in the area under challenge. On 13 minutes Guiseley looked sure to score when Gabriel Johnson burst though. His shot was followed up by Kallan Murphy but Larell King got back to make a brilliant goal line block and saw the ball deflect safely into Matt Yates’s hands. Another chance came Guiseley’s way when Prince Ekpolo fired over after Yates had pushed away the original shot. On 24 minutes Tom Marshall was penalised for a foul on Murphy in the area. Leading scorer Johnson stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort come back off the crossbar. Guiseley were made to pay for the miss as Ilkeston went straight down the other end to take the lead through a smart Cursons finish. There was a fierce response from Guiseley and Murphy had a chance but was off target before Jameel Ible scored an equaliser on 34 minutes when a corner wasn’t cleared. Guiseley bossed the remainder off the first half but the teams went in level.
After an even restart Guiseley gradually got on top and Ilkeston had to defend. Yates saved brilliantly from Liam Tongue then Jonathan Wafula back defending, produced an outstanding tackle inside Ilkeston's area to deny Guiseley a real scoring opportunity. On 68 minutes Guiseley were really unlucky when a cross shot by Tongue hit the inside of the far post and rebounded into Yates’s hands. As in the first half, Guiseley’s misfortune was made worse when Cursons restored Ilkeston’s lead two minutes later. Guiseley retaliated with fury but Ilkeston had another chance from a free kick in a central position which Tom Marshall fired wide. Guiseley continued to press but Ilkeston were defending for their lives and Yates was equal to everything thrown at him. In added time both sides created an opportunity. Murphy fired over for Guiseley and Ilkeston debutant Jaden White had a chance to make it 3-1 but saw his effort go the wrong side of the post. After the game Ilkeston manager Ian Deakin praised his team’s resilient performance while Guiseley manager Andy Welsh rued the chances missed in the first half.

Re: Sat 23rd March - Guiseley v Ilkeston - ko 3pm

.
We’ve just come through a run of six really tough games against teams challenging for promotion. Until the Guiseley result, we only had two points to show points from them so the three points on Saturday were welcome and lifted us back up to 12th in the league table.

03 Feb Marine            (H)  Draw 1-1
10 Feb Lancaster       (H)  Lost   1-2
17 Feb Macclesfield   (A). Lost   3-5
24 Feb Radcliffe         (H)  Lost  1-2
16 Mar Hyde Utd.       (H)  Draw 1-1
23 Mar Guiseley         (A). Won  2-1

We’ve shown that we can compete with best teams and this is acknowledged by most fans.
What a signing Tom Cursons has turned out to be with six goals in seven matches and some excellent performances which haven’t gone unnoticed by other clubs.
Lindon Meikle has also proved to be a significant addition with truly outstanding performances in each game he’s played in.

The win at Guiseley means we've won more matches away from home than we have at the NMG.

A bit like Warrington Rylands who have not lost away all season ( they have drawn eleven) where as Basford have only won one away from home.

Guiseley's Match Report

https://guiseleyafc.co.uk/ruthless-robins-spring-surprise-snatch-victory-over-lions/

Ruthless Robins Spring Surprise Snatch Victory Over Lions
Guiseley fell to their first home defeat since January as they were defeated 2-1 by an Ilkeston Town side that rode their luck at Nethermoor, writes Edward Robertson.
Manager Andy Welsh was left to rue the fine margins that cost his side. “It’s disappointing, of course. We miss the penalty, then they go up the other end and score, and we lose our momentum. Arguably, we could have had three or four but we didn’t take our chances.”The game started briskly as the Lions missed a huge chance to take an early lead. Great work from Michael Afuye created space for Gabriel Johnson. His effort was parried by Ilkeston goalkeeper Matthew Yates. The rebound fell tantalisingly into the path of Kallan Murphy, who was then in turn denied brilliantly by Llarell King who blocked the ball on the goal line. After twenty five minutes, Guiseley thought they’d struck gold. Murphy was bundled to the floor in the penalty area and a spot kick was signalled by the referee. However, much to the home fans dismay, Johnson’s effort smacked against the crossbar and away from danger.Things would go from bad to worse for the Lions. The resultant clearance found Thomas Cursons in the Lions half. The striker wormed away from Aidan Walker and Jameel Ible and poked the ball past Ollie Battersby to give the visitors a lead against the run of play. Guiseley weren’t behind for long and equalised only eight minutes later. Leigh Whelan’s free kick from the centre circle released Afuye down the right hand side. The loanee’s sweeping cross found the feet of Ible, who knocked home to level the closely contested affair.
The second half started in the same positive manner for the Lions when Liam Tongue’s precision drive shot was palmed away by Yates. As the second half progressed it was Guiseley who continued to push for a winner. Murphy’s determined run down the line and resulting cross was deflected by a defender and over the outstretched arms of Yates. The ball hit the crossbar and rebounded off the line and into the grateful clutches of the goalkeeper, leaving home fans grumbling that the incident had denied the laws of physics. With just twenty minutes remaining, Ilkeston snatched the game from the host’s grasp. An accurate cross from Lindon Meikle found Cursons who again slotted past Battersby to give the Robins a lead against the run of play. Despite changes made from the bench the Lions struggled to re-establish their foothold on the game. The visitors claimed the three points to pour cold water on Guiseley’s play-off charge. Welsh was keen for his charges to learn from their mistakes. “We’ve missed some chances, had crosses that flashed across the goal. But if we want to go up this year, we have to be ruthless, we have to take our chances and we have to defend better.”

Re: Sat 23rd March - Guiseley v Ilkeston - ko 3pm

Highlights from the game. Yes, on another day we could have been 4-1 down at the break. Thought we probably edged the second half. Meikle's a class act, hope he's back next year. Don't know what happened to Jamie Walker - landed on his shoulder and damaged it? Fantastic effort from the boys, especially when you think about the makeshift backline - missing Perch and Cox, Walker at left back to King at left-back and Wafula at right-back (they don't show it on the video but he made a magnificent last ditch tackle in the penalty box towards the end of the game).

A tad windy throughout. And for those not at the game Guiseley only had one penalty - one or two problems with the video editing I think.

Re: Sat 23rd March - Guiseley v Ilkeston - ko 3pm

.

I think it's fair to say that the away matches live longer in the memory.
Guiseley was our seventh win on the road and I can remember all of them:

1 Our first away win was at Basford 1-0, Goodson the scorer
2 We followed that with a memorable 4-0 win at Lancaster. Walker hat-trick plus one from Brandy
3 The next away win was at Atherton 3-2 Goals by Marshall and Walker then a last minute winner by Ben Starkie
4 We won by the only goal at Gainsborough. Walker the scorer from the half way line
5 We then had an outstanding 2-1 win at Worksop. Brandy and Walker the scorers
6 That was followed up by a 2-0 win at Stafford Rangers. Cursons at the double
7 On Saturday another great win at Guiseley. Cursons at the double again.
