Alnwick Town beat Ponteland United 1-0 after scoring after ninety seconds through Lewis Fairbairn in the final of the League Cup. The game was played at Morpeth Town in front of a healthy looking crowd of about 400. Portland had some chances to equalise after their early set back with Matty Alexander one excellent save early in the second half. Portland who had beaten Alnwick twice in the league appeared to run out of steam after the hour mark and rarely troubled the excellent Alnwick defence. Alnwick in fact came closer to scoring after rejuvenating their attack and midfield with their five substitutions win the second half. Veteran Laws was causing problems for ponteland belying his advancing year and Rich Payne chased everything that moved. At the final whistle the flares were ignited and the Alnwick 472 crew stopped singing about Harry Potter and celebrated.
The following day there was further good news for Alnwick Town as their promotion to the Northern League was confirmed. The team may need strengthening and the club will need to generally up its game to compete st its new
