Last season, Gary Hayward got us off to a flyer, winning our opening three fixtures.
Marske (A) 3-1 Waker
Gainsborough (H) 4-0 Fenton, Tyson, Walker 2
Workington (H) 6-1 Walker 2, Barrows, Hallam, Eratt-Thompson, Tyson
Our first fixture was a long trip to Marske. We went behind to a penalty and trailed 1-0 at half time. There was a lengthy stoppage after the referee picked up an injury and a call was put out for a replacement official. After the restart when a new official had been found, three goals in 12 minutes swung the game our way. Jamie Walker headed an equaliser on 53 minutes. Henri Wilder put us ahead on the hour and an own goal on 65 minutes sealed the win.
Against Gainsborough and Workington we looked like world beaters hammering in ten goals giving us a maximum of nine points from our opening three matches. The appointment of Gary Hayward as manager looked like a master stroke.
Unfortunately the bubble was to burst and the next four matches ended in defeats. We lost 1-0 at FC United then lost again 4-1 at Bradford Park Avenue and again 4-2 at home to Whitby on the Bank Holiday. This was followed by a 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Mickleover which proved to be Gary Hayward’s last game in charge.

Gary Hayward's reign as Ilkeston manager must be one of the shortest on record. He presided over just 7 matches;
3 wins and 3 defeats in the league plus an FA Cup defeat.
The win in the first match at Marske United was later to be removed from League records after Marske dropped out of the league.
