Cursons appears to be fouled again but he's getting nothing from the ref.  Langley does well at the feet of Cursons. Morpeth living dangerously just now.     0-1.    53 mins

Great defending by Parker to hold off James in the box.   We're back in the ascendency as the rainfall increases. Cursons fouled again. this time he gets the free kick as it's on the halfway line.      1-1    69 mins

Ilkeston corner. It's chucking it down with a vengeance. Nothing from the corner. Dixon tripped - nothing given. I think the ref is making allowances for the conditions.      1-1.    76 mins

Fantastic performance. Bossed the whole game. Terrific strike from Kirkby-Moore.  Should have won 5-1 or 6-1, but I'll take 2-1.

Re: Tue 8 October 24 : Morpeth v Ilkeston : ko 7 45

We get back to Ilkeston only to find the road to the ground off the dual carriageway at the Cotmanhay sign is closed due to flooding. So we try the other way via Tesco and Awsworth Road. Awsworth Road is closed. Eventually we get to the ground via Ebenezer Street and the flooding has actually subsided so that the cars can get out of the car park. Arrive home 10 past 2.

Re: Tue 8 October 24 : Morpeth v Ilkeston : ko 7 45

.
Tue 8th October 2024
Northern Premier League
Morpeth Town 1  Ilkeston Town  2
Ilkeston bounced back from their FA Trophy defeat with dominant performance in torrential rain at Morpeth. The Robins fell behind at the start of the second half but a spectacular strike by Harvey Kirby-Moore and a late goal by Jamie Walker gave Ilkeston a deserved win.
The pouring rain and wet surface of the 3G pitch ensured it would be a fast moving game. The first chance fell to Morpeth after a dangerous cross into the Ilkeston box. Lindon Meikle almost sent Tom Cursons clear but the ball hit the Ilkeston striker’s heel. A powerful drive by Walker from distance was only just the wrong side of the post then Cursons had a chance but dragged his effort wide. On 35 minutes Morpeth keeper Dan Langley did really well to block a close range attempt after a cross into the box was met by Sam Parker. Cursons then created a chance for himself but was denied by Langley. George Wilkinson stepped in to stop a Morpeth counter attack before Walker fired narrowly wide for Ilkeston just before half time.
Morpeth went ahead in their first attack of the second half. Fenton John lifted the ball over Ilkeston’s defence to Luke James who fired into the bottom corner of the net. Langley bravely spread himself to save from Cursons then L’Varn Brandy fired over from Jordan Stevens cross. The equaliser when it finally came was worth the wait. Kirby-Moore received the ball on the edge of the box, spun round and found the top corner with a fabulous strike. A couple of minutes later the ball was in the Morpeth net again but Ilkeston celebrations were cut short when the strike was disallowed. There was then a chance for Morpeth when James was driving towards goal but Parker did well to prevent him from getting his shot off. Another chance fell to Cursons but again he was denied by Langley. The winner came on 80 minutes following a left wing corner. The ball bobbled around before Walker finally poked the ball home.

Re: Tue 8 October 24 : Morpeth v Ilkeston : ko 7 45

After the 'bad day at the office' on Saturday, this was an excellent performance. The attitude was spot-on, the boys were at it from minute one, and for me they bossed the whole game. We had good chances to score 3 or 4 more. TC should certainly have had a couple. One of those games where all players were a 7 out of 10. Interesting decision to put Jamie Walker at left full-back and Sam Parker at centre- back, but both did well. Terrific strike from Kirby-Moore for the first goal. That lad's got bags of talent and the right attitude, we just have to be patient with him. He's only 19. For me, the key last night was how well Meikle played, almost back to the form he showed towards the backend of last season. He and Connor Dixon found lots of space and controlled the midfield. It felt like we had a well balanced team again.

Absolutely chucked it down for most of the game but the pitch coped with it really well until the last half hour when the left side of the pitch (the Walker/Brandy side) started to look quite waterlogged. When you score what proves to be the winner in the 80th minute you're just hoping they're going to finish the game.

I won't say the 3 1/2 hour journey back flew by, but boy, it really helps when your team wins and everyone is in good spirits. I appreciate it would be very difficult to implement (maybe impossible), but I wonder if they could give some consideration to midweek away league fixtures being no more than 2 hours travel from your ground.

How can fans be so happy in the rain? An Ilkeston away day win of course.  It's a long trip to Morpeth and a very late return. Lindon Meikle had to drive up straight from his teaching job an hour behind the players on the coach so he was  late arriving at the ground. He then proceeded to look the best player on the pitch. It was a game that we dominated but couldn't find the net. We then go behind at the start of the second half. It didn't phase us and we kept plugging away. What a brilliant equaliser from Harvey. Then we think we've scored again only to see the goal disallowed. We keep going and the winner eventually comes and it's Jamie Walker back on the scoresheet. A really good team performance with every player contributing. For a change Tom Cursons didn't score but give him credit , he gets himself into so many scoring positions.  No Tom Marshall but defensively we were sound with George Wilkinson looking like a solid acquisition. This squad of players are a real team who work well together and have a great camaraderie. Saturday's blip is now forgotten and again we look like proper playoff contenders. To win at Morpeth is not easy and to come from behind makes it more special. The bond between the supporters and the management team and players is amazing to see. For many supporters this is the best team we've had in a long while and at this moment in time, a playoff challenge looks a real possibility.

Admission prices at Morpeth were : Adults £10, Concessions £6, U16s £3. (significantly lower than other grounds)

Morpeth’s secretary told us that the Club had made a conscious decision to reduce last year’s price of admission by £2.
They gambled that they would attract enough extra people coming to matches to offset the amount lost by the price drop.
He said that so far gate receipts was slightly down on last season but the increased attendances meant more people were spending on drinks and food.
