WE''RE TRYING BUT NOT MUCH IS GOING RIGHT.  WE HAVE the ball in the net but there was a foul on the keeper according to the ref..

What a disappointment to throw away the 3 points earned at Morpeth by losing against a very poor Workington. The wind made it difficult to play decent football but we missed too many chances and didn’t defend well enough. Cursons has got to improve his conversion of chances to goals and other players must find the net besides Cursons. I know that we’re always going to lose some matches but it’s so frustrating to lose to an inferior side. We certainly missed LV’s running at defenders. Dixon fought hard in midfield but it seemed like Workington knew they had to stop him playing because whenever he got the ball they swarmed round him like wasps. Far be it from me to tell Deaks what to do but why hasn’t Koby been given a chance. He would have been my first choice sub to come on when we needed goals. Of course we would really benefit from having a fit Dec Eratt-Thompson back in the team. He would make such a difference. The Workington defeat means it puts more pressure on us to get all 3 points against Guiseley in order to stay in playoff contention.  At present it feels like one step forward, one step back with good displays against Ashton and Morpeth followed by defeats against Coleshill and Workington. Moan over - We should appreciate what we’ve got and accept that there will always be setbacks.

Two remarkably similar goals from in-form Steven Rigg,  within forty-eight seconds of each other, turned the game in Reds’ favour.
He struck in the 37th and 38th minutes with two sublime goals, lobbing the stranded Matt Yates from almost the same square metre of Borough Park turf.
The goals epitomised the confidence oozing from Rigg at the moment who is not only Workington’s top scorer, but a centre forward who is leading the line well and pivotal to how the team plays.  He has been an unsung hero for much of his five seasons at Borough Park but is now deservedly getting the plaudits on a regular basis. And those two goals got Workington back into a game they possibly would have lost earlier in the season.
A confident spell from the visitors and Reds’ inability to get to grips with a fierce swirling wind culminated in the Derbyshire outfit opening the scoring. Steven Swinglehurst lost his footing as he twisted and turned trying to judge the flight of the ball and Tom Cursons, who had squandered two earlier chances, took advantage to drive the opener past Alex Mitchell in the twenty-seventh minute. But Swinglehurst atoned for his unfortunate mishap with an assist for the equaliser ten minutes later.  His long ball from back to front got Rigg goal-side of the blue shirted back line and he confidently restored parity. The home support was still celebrating his first goal when he netted a carbon copy second soon after.  This time it was Josh Galloway who sent Rigg in the clear and with the crowd probably thinking, “I bet you can’t do that again,” he did!


Workington’s rear guard was more secure after the break and they needed to be to deal with Ilkeston’s aerial threat. Mitchell bravely saved one effort on the line when he smothered the ball amidst several pairs of boots and Town thought they had equalised via Harvey Kirkby-Moore but the ‘keeper had been fouled in the build-up. Cursons scooped another close-range effort over the bar when two defenders failed to deal with a cross from the left but Workington survived that scare and actually managed the situation well in the later stages. In fact, they had a great opportunity to score a third when man-of-the-match Rigg was presented with a chance to complete his hat-trick.  It seemed just a case of finding an empty net from the edge of the area but Yates recovered his ground to make a fine save.
Overcoming a nervous start, and the conditions played a part in that, followed by a character-generated recovery and good game management in the later stages extended the winning sequence to four matches in all competitions.

Yes, we're missing Dec, yes, we're too reliant on TC to get the goals (13 out of 25 of our goals in league and Cup), but to me the biggest problem is our defence. If your attack is having an off-day, your defence gets you out of trouble by keeping a clean sheet. Ours doesn't do that. 16 games in league and Cup, and only one clean sheet, against Heanor. We've conceded in every league game so far. Clearly this has to improve. If it doesn't we won't make the playoffs.

Incidentally, we're the epitome of a 'both teams to score' team - both teams have scored in 11 out of 12 of our league games. We've conceded in every league game and scored in every league game except Worksop.

Deaks talks about the anger and frustration he felt after the game. He'll sort these problems out. I think we might just have a strong second half to the season.

Personally i don`t want the play offs , yes it would be great BUT ..... Even the thought of promotion scares me, we as a club aren`t ready and i think we wont be for a few years . Its a massive step up not for the footballing side but 
financially it could really hurt us . its only my opinion though guys ...
