I was once asked what was the best Ilkeston match that I could remember and this one had drifted out of my memory. As a bunch of us Ilkeston oldies watched the match at Eastwood on Saturday it was recalled by Bert. Under Kevin Wilson we went to Stamford at their old ground before they moved to their present ground. Stamford were top of the league and unbeaten with five straight wins and we went there and beat them 4-0. It was one of those games when everything went right. Can anyone else remember this match? 

I’ve looked it up and it was ten years ago on 2nd September 2014. What a team we had. Our scorers were: Luke Shaw 9 mins, Rob Duffy 23 mins, Kane Richards 37 mins, Che Adams 70 mins.

Rampant Ilkeston bring winning run to an end

Stamford’s 100% start to their NPL season was left in tatters last night as Ilkeston inflicted a drubbing on the league leaders.
On a glorious evening for football Stamford manager David Staff was presented with the league’s club of the month award, for their five straight victories.
The Robins, however, were in a determined mood to put an end to the unbeaten record and won a corner after just 10 seconds. Stamford skipper Richard Jones forced to play the ball behind when the dangerous Che Adams looked to latch onto a through ball.
All the early play was Ilkeston. A long free kick from James Reid was met by the head of Joe Maguire but he was just too high. Just a minute later a dangerous break by Kane Richards saw the ball deflect wide for a corner. On nine minutes Ilkeston were ahead, Adams’s powerfully struck shot from distance was parried away by Richard Knight in the Stamford goal but Luke Shaw was on hand to poke home the rebound.
Stamford looked to get some sort of foothold in the game, Ryan Robbins seeking to burst onto a through ball but Maguire produced a timely tackle. Jordan Smith then sliced horribly wide after being set up following a surging run by Ellis Myles.
It was short lived. Ilkeston added a second on 24 minutes. Reid’s brilliant free kick struck the bar and top scorer Rob Duffy was on hand to tap home. It was very nearly three moments later when Shaw’s through ball found Adams but Knight produced a great save to deflect his shot onto to the post and away for a corner.
Seven minutes before the break, Ilkeston grabbed that crucial third goal, Adams again causing all sorts of problems. His shot was well saved by Knight but the visitors reacted quickest and Kane Richards tapped home the rebound.
Stamford had their first shot on target late in the half but Jordan Smith’s header from a Dan Lawlor corner was easily cleared.
Ilkeston started the second half as they had the first, Lewis Carr produced a double block from a corner, the second of which hit him as he lay on the floor from the first. As the half wore on Stamford’s frustrations grew and the match became niggly with fouls being awarded for both sides.
Nabil Shariff worked an excellent shooting opportunity but his effort was deflected onto the post. Ilkeston’s fourth came from their most impressive player, Adams showing great pace and composure to finish across Knight.
Stamford kept going. Ryan Robbins’s powerful shot was well saved by Jordan Smith in the Ilkeston goal. Another Ryan Robbins effort was deflected for a corner. From the resultant Shawn Richards corner Carr headed down and Ilkeston’s Jordan Smith could only parry straight up but Shaw on the line managed to head behind.
Ilkeston very nearly had a fifth with more fluid attacking play, Sub Michael Williams’ header comfortably gathered in the end by Knight.
The final whistle sounded with Stamford’s perfect record destroyed by an Ilkeston side who have now scored 19 goals in six matches. The Daniels remain top by three points but the result proves how unforgiving this league can be if you are having an off day.

OMG i can remember this match well we were on fire that night , their poor young right back couldnt cope with Chey running him ragged .. Ilson totally out played Stamford 

Westfilelds away , might not be on anyone`s list but it was a massive game at a very good team. We were struggling a bit just before this game if i remember right . In high winds we went in one nil at half time but the second the wind was against . The team defended amazingly with all the players doing their bit . I was on the phone to Alex Middleton saying we were hanging on then we went and scored . I am sure i must have deafened Alex at the time as the fans were celebrating the goal . It was very hard earnt three points that day ..

Again this match i will never forget . Ilson v Kendal when we went down to losing 1-4 at home then it happened the fantastic come back . The last six minutes and three goals WOW what a comeback . And one fan ( me ) getting stuck on the hording celebrating ....

Jon Shapland mentioned the Derbyshire Senior Cup final at Chesterfield against Matlock. I can understand him saying that because of the occasion. We didn't play particularly well and it looked like Matlock would win. That was until Kevin Wilson brought on James Reid with ten minutes left. Reid single handedly turned the game Ilkeston's way and victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat. 


Another great game I recall mainly for the last minute winner was against Worcester City at the NMG. I had the same view as the camera as Tom Marshall's cross into the box found the top corner.

I missed that match but luckily got to see on the yobe tube clip

My best game was without doubt the 7-1 defeat of Tamworth in the nineties. We had lost to them 4-0 a few weeks earlier and when they took an early it did not look good but Mark Harbottle inspired the Robins to an unforgettable win. What a night!
