Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town 2 Hebburn Town 1
Two remarkable goals and an outstanding team performance earned Ilkeston a crucial victory against their promotion rivals. A late Hebburn goal meant a tense finish but Ilkeston’s unbeaten home record was stretched to nine games and they are now up to 4th place in the league table.
Hebburn keeper Kieran Hunter made the first of many outstanding saves tipping over Jordan Stevens goal bound effort after he had worked his way into the area. Stevens then created a chance for Tom Cursons but the Ilkeston striker’s effort was too high. Cursons then became provider setting up Connor Dixon whose strike was well held by Hunter. Ilkeston were producing waves of attacking threat and a close range Jamie Walker header was somehow headed off the line by Aiden Heywood. Hebburn’s counter attacking meant Ilkeston didn’t have it all their own way and Matt Yates did well to save Amar Purewal’s header. Ilkeston nearly scored twice just before half time. A Cursons attempt took a diversion off defender Liam Noble into Hunter’s grasp then a Walker header was just the wrong side of the post and into the side netting but a superb first period display by the Robins ended without reward.
The opening five minutes of the second half saw Hebburn have their best spell. Yates had to push a Jack Donaghy header from Nobles cross round the post then from the corner Ilkeston’s keeper denied Purewal. Oliver Martin fired just wide before Ilkeston began to recover their first half dominance. The opening goal came on 55 minutes and what a goal. Cursons did really well to create the opportunity for full back Sam Parker who fired home a rocket from the edge of the penalty area. Hebburn hit back with a Michael Turner header that was just wide. Great defending from George Wilkinson denied Purewal a one-on-one with Yates then on 75 minutes L’Varn Brandy put Ilkeston two up with another outstanding finish. He won the ball and advanced towards goal before letting fly and finding the top corner. Purewal pulled a goal back for Hebburn on 81 minutes to give Hebburn a lifeline. Cursons had a great chance to seal the win but was thwarted by Hunter’s save. Cursons then curled a fine effort against the crossbar before Bailey Adamson had a chance to level right at the death.

Saturday 30th November Northern Premier League Round Up
Northern Premier League leaders Macclesfield avoided a second successive league defeat after late drama saw them return to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at Workington.
A goal from Luke Duffy in second-half stoppage time was all that separated the sides, who were on course for a goalless draw at Borough Park before the former Warrington Town winger struck at the death. Macclesfield increased their lead at the top of the table to 15 points, after their nearest rivals heading into the weekend, Guiseley, were held at home to Warrington Rylands. Rylands led by two just past the hour mark, but goals from Jordan Thewlis and Will Longbottom - his 14th of the season - meant that the points were shared as the Lions maintained their unbeaten streak after a run of four successive wins.
Worksop Town moved back up to second in the table following a 2-1 win at home to fellow high-flyers Stockton Town. A David Brammall double was enough to secure the three points, with Michael Roberts’ late strike proving a mere consolation for the visiting Anchors.
Stockton dropped out of the top five as a result, and so did Hebburn Town after their 2-1 defeat at Ilkeston Town. Goals from Sam Parker and L’Varn Brandy saw Ian Deakin’s side take a two-goal lead with 15 minutes to go. Amar Purewal’s 10th of the season set up a nervy finish, but Ilkeston held on to preserve their unbeaten home record and climb to fourth.
Ashton United round out the top five, after they were victorious in a seven-goal thriller at home to Basford United. Basford led 3-2 with five minutes left, but goals from Trevon Bryan and Tom Denton at the death turned the game on its head as the Robins staged a miraculous fightback to earn maximum points at Hurst Cross.
Towards the foot of the table, FC United of Manchester won their first home league game of the season, overcoming Mickleover 2-1. Noah Halford scored one of FC United’s two goals, just days after completing a loan move from Bolton Wanderers.
Blyth Spartans fell to their eighth defeat in the last nine as a Jack Redshaw goal was all that separated themselves and Hyde United, who moved to within a point of the play-offs. And in a game that saw all four goals come in the second half, Bamber Bridge picked up an important 3-1 home win against Leek Town, who are now winless in their last six games. Elsewhere in the division, a miraculous comeback preserved a point at Craik Park for Morpeth Town, as they battled from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Matlock Town. Nic Bollado’s goal in second-half stoppage time completed an unlikely comeback as the Highwaymen held their position in the top 10.
Finally, Whitby Town handed Lancaster City just their fourth league defeat of the season in convincing fashion as they ran out 3-0 winners on the Yorkshire Coast. Goals from Nathan Thomas, Connor Simpson and Layton Watts secured a third win in four for the Seasiders, lifting them into the top half.

What a difference two wins make. After the three successive away defeats at Workington, Prescot and Lancaster my thoughts were that we’re probably not good enough to make the playoffs. But two wins against Warrington Rylands and Hebburn brings a return of unbounded optimism. Saturday’s performance against Hebburn (a team above us in the league) must rank as one of our best this season. It was a cracking game with two excellent goals and an overall good team performance. Jordan Stevens showed his obvious ability in the early stages and must now be considered as a starter. I thought Tom Cursons had an excellent game despite not getting his usual goal. The whole defence was good and didn’t look like conceding after Hebburn had pulled one back. There was plenty of options on the bench and we now seem to have a good squad and the necessary competition for places. Pity there was only 508 at the game. The ones that didn’t come missed a really good match. Hope they return for the home match against Worksop. If we win that one we'll really be flying.

I have to say that the new media team made a very impressive start with their coverage of the Hebburn game.
