Northern Premier League
Ilkeston Town 4 Morpeth Town 2
Ilkeston looked comfortable when 2-0 up halfway through the second half but two superb Morpeth goals inside three minutes threatened to turn the game on its head. But back came Ilkeston with another two strikes to wrap up an engrossing contest. Morpeth keeper Dan Langley was man of the match after pulling off a string of outstanding saves.
Ilkeston dominated the early stages and Jamie Walker was first to be denied by Langley. The Morpeth shot stopper then saved Connor Dixon’s effort before Jack Foalle fired wide for Morpeth. Langley then produced two top drawer saves keeping out Walker’s shot heading for the top corner and tipping over a Tom Cursons glancing header from Lindon Meikle’s cross. On 31 minutes there was a big chance for Morpeth’s Fenton John on the break but Matt Yates blocked his shot and soon afterwards a similar chance fell to Foalle who carried the ball a long way but scuffed his shot with only Yates to beat. On 39 minutes Ilkeston took the lead when Dixon found Cursons who fired past the advancing Langley. A brilliant burst of speed and shot by L’Varn Brandy rattled the Morpeth crossbar then in added time Dixon doubled Ilkeston’s lead with a shot which went in off the post.
Half Time: Ilkeston 2 Morpeth 0
A cracking effort by Cursons from 20 yards brought a brilliant one handed diving save by Langley as Ilkeston looked to go further ahead. Morpeth’s defenders did well to survive a sustained period of Ilkeston pressure blocking several shots in quick succession before Brandy fired into the side netting. Nic Bollado had an opportunity for Morpeth but Yates made the save. On 72 minutes. Morpeth pulled a goal back when Jerome Greaves found the top corner with a superb strike. Three minutes later Ballado hit a spectacular equaliser and Ilkeston were in danger of losing a game they had dominated. Langley produced another outstanding save to keep out Walker’s brilliant volley as Ilkeston found a second wind. Walker was not to be denied though and on 80 minutes he curled the ball past Langley into the far corner of the net to regain the lead for Ilkeston. In added time Cursons made sure of the points with his second goal of the game after good work by Alex Hardwick. Right at the death Cursons was close to a deserved hat-trick with a magnificent curler from the left that looked destined for the far top corner but just stayed out.
Full Time: Ilkeston 4 Morpeth 2

What have we got to do to bring more people into the ground. Only 469 attendance today for an absolute belter of a game including six cracking goals and an outstanding performance from Morpeth's keeper.
Admittedly it was a cold day but we're 4th in the league and pushing for promotion.
On Tusday night (21 Jan) we're home to Alfreton Town in the Derbyshire Senior Cup and we've reduced admission prices to just £6 in an effort to attract more people to come and watch.

NPL Round-UP - Sat 18th Jan 2025
Guiseley extended their unbeaten run to 16 following a fourth straight win, during what was another pulsating weekend of action in the Northern Premier League. Gabriel Johnson’s goal on the stroke of half-time was all that separated themselves and Basford United, who slipped to an eighth defeat in nine. Guiseley are now one game away from equalling the league best’s unbeaten streak this season, held by leaders Macclesfield.
The Silkmen blew away Gainsborough Trinity this weekend, winning 4-0 at the Kal Group Stadium. A brace from Danny Elliott saw him move onto 21 league goals for the season. Luke Duffy and D’Mani Mellor also got in on the act, helping Robbie Savage's side to a second straight win.
Elliott was joined on 21 goals by Tom Cursons, who also scored twice in Ilkeston Town’s 4-2 win over Morpeth Town. Ian Deakin’s Robins led 2-0 at half-time, but quickfire goals from Jerome Greaves and Nic Bollado had the Highwaymen level with 15 minutes left. Ilkeston were able to push on in the latter stages as two goals in the final 10 minutes saw them return to winning ways after defeat to Leek Town two weeks ago. Ilkeston were able to cut the gap between themselves and the top three, after Worksop Town dropped points away at Prescot Cables.
Two goals inside the first 10 minutes of the second half for Worksop turned the game on its head after Michael Carberry had the hosts in front at half-time. Jack Goodwin’s equaliser just past the hour mark earned a point for Cables, who have now gone 10 games without a win.
Ashton United continued their league-best form in style, scoring five without reply against Whitby Town. A Louie White brace was the highlight, helping the Robins secure a fifth win in six games - scoring at least four in three of those victories.
Towards the foot of the table, Blyth Spartans’ winless run extended to 15 games after they fell to a 2-1 defeat away at FC United of Manchester. FC United continue to go from strength to strength under Mark Beesley, this latest win lifting them into the top 10 of the division.
Leek Town moved further clear of the league’s bottom four with their fourth win in five, defeating Lancaster City 2-1. Alex Hurst netted twice in the first half to secure the three points, as Josh Brehaut’s side moved five points clear of Prescot in 19th.
Elsewhere, Mickleover were unable to make it two back-to-back wins after they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Warrington Rylands. Two first-half goals from Neil Reynolds’ side extended their current unbeaten run to eight games.
Bamber Bridge avoided falling into the relegation zone as they picked up a point at play-off hopefuls Stockton Town. Will Russ scored twice for the Brig as they halted a three-match losing run. Dropped points for Stockton mean they sit five points adrift of the play-offs.
Workington also picked up their first win since late November as they triumphed in a six-goal thriller over Matlock Town. The Reds scored twice in either half to deny Matlock a sixth win in eight matches. The other game of the weekend, which saw Hebburn Town host Hyde United, was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
