Ilkeston were so unlucky not to find another last minute winner when they were deprived by a linesman’s flag for offside. Their playoff hopes remain alive because rivals Ashton United were beaten but the loss of the extra two points could prove to be crucial. FC United had to withstand a battering in the final minutes when ilkeston threw everything at them and Ilkeston manager Ian Deakin said he couldn’t have asked for anymore from his players.

FC United started well with Paul Ennis, Jordan Buckley and Adam Le Fondre having opportunities and it wasn’t really a surprise when Ennis smashed a loose ball past Matt Yates to give the visitors an 8th minute lead. But the goal sparked Ilkeston into life and L’Varn Brandy hit a spectacular equaliser from Jamie Walker’s pass on 19 minutes. United nearly regained the lead when Le Fondre volleyed on the turn and saw his effort land on the crossbar. Ilkeston were having more possession but the better chances were falling to United on the counter. Jan Palinkas had a great chance with a header just before half time but couldn’t make enough contact with the cross.

Ilkeston started strongly after the break and a Jordan Stevens free kick was just too high. Ilkeston maintained the pressure and FC United attacks became less frequent and their defenders were conceding numerous free kicks. A Jordan Stevens blast brought a diving save from Conor O’Keefe. There was a bizarre moment when FC’s Buckley was booked for kicking the ball away and the ball flew into the top corner of the net from a narrow angle for what would have been a sensational goal. Lindon Meikle fired over for Ilkeston and Yates had to save at the other end from Le Fondre. A Tom Marshall free kick skimmed O’Keefe’s crossbar then Yates had to save again this time a stinging shot from Declan McLoughlin as Ilkeston pushed players forward in search of a winner. The last ten minutes saw FC hanging on and a brilliant last ditch tackle by Dec Evans denied Ilkeston a great opportunity. When the game went into added time, Ilkeston though they had scored the winner when a right wing cross by Walker was hammered in from close range by Alex Hardwick. But the joy was cut short when the linesman raised his flag for what looked like a very tight offside decision.

How unlucky were we not to score a third last minute winner and what a difference to our playoff chances that would have made. As it stands, Ashton's defeat against Gainsborough means that we're 4 points behind them with 3 matches to play.
It now seems that our playoff chances depend on our result at Macclesfield this coming Saturday. Ashton are away to Bamber Bridge who are desperate for points in a relegation battle so could lose again..
If that were to happen and we could get a point at Macclesfield the points difference would be reduced to three.
