We're still hanging in there with a chance of making the playoffs but it looks like we have to try to do the impossible and get a result at Macclesfield. A defeat would almost certainly end our playoff hopes. Ashton are 4 points ahead of us and have what looks like a tricky next game against Bamber Bridge.
If Ashton win against Bamber Bridge and we lose then they would have 7 points more than us with two games to go. (ie we cannot catch them)
So we have to get at least a point at Macclesfield to keep us in with a mathematical chance of finishing above Ashton on goal difference. At present Ashton's goal difference is +17 and Ilkeston's is +16.

Macclesfield have already won the league but they want another 5 points to beat the league record points total of 104 held by Darlington.
Their record is : P39, W32. D4, L3, F99, A29, Points 100
Their home record is : P19, W17, D1, L1. F49, A12, Points 52
Macclesfield have a far bigger playing budget than the other teams in the league. One of their players is reputed to be earning £2000 per week which is ten times more than most of our players.
The Silkmen have won their last nine matches and the last time they lost was on 7th January, a 1-0 defeat at Ashton United. Their only home defeat was against Leek Town 1-0 on Boxing Day.
Ilkeston drew 1-1 with Macclesfield at the NMG back in August.
Leek and Ilkeston are the only teams not to be beaten by Macclesfield so far this season
Macclesfield pay Ilkeston this Saturday and Leek away on Easter Monday.
Macclesfield's Danny Elliott is the league's leading scorer with 31 goals.

Last night on Radio 5 Live's '606' Football 'Phone-In - Robbie Savage posing the question whether he should field "the kids" against Ilkeston on Saturday in order to hold the first team back for the Leek -v- Macclesfield derby - and championship celebrations - on the BH Monday.
To save you the pain - it's at about 22.33...!

Thanks for that plymrob. Very interesting. Our playoff chances have just improved a little.
I hope Robbie Savage does decide to play a weakened team. As he says; he believes his players are good enough. It could be a way for Macc to get their own back on Ashton who beat them 1-0 at Ashton with a very late goal on a Tuesday night in January,

ilkeston and Macclesfield have two matches to play only two days apart ie Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday.
Macclesfield cannot play their strongest team in both of their matches. They have to play some squad players in both games. The same applies to Ilkeston of course.
I would suggest that Macclesfield's prority will be making sure that they win their local derby against Leek especially as Leek beat them at Macclesfield on Boxing Day.
I'm guessing therefore that our chance of a result is not as remote as it might have been. It will still be an incredibly difficult game but I really think that we could come away with something.
Am I being ridiculously over optimistic?

A point at Macclesfield will ensure that we stay in playoff contention regardless of Ashton's result at Bamber Bridge.
These are the final 3 matches of Ashton and Ilkeston
Ashton 66 pts GD +17 Bamber (A), Mickleover (H), Workington (A)
Ilkeston 62 pts GD +16 Macclesfield (A), Matlock (H). Bamber B (A)

Most supporters think that the playoffs will be out of reach after the Macclesfield match.
But they thought that after the Stockton defeat and it's not all over yet.
10 seasons ago on 25th April 2015 we made the playoffs with a James Reid goal in a 1-1 draw at Nantwich in the last match of the season. Blyth Spartans were favourites to pip us but they lost their final match.
Can we clinch a playoff place again in our last match this season?
We are currently 4 points behind Ashton with 3 matches to play.
If we can take it to the last match, our final game is away to Bamber Bridge and Ashton’s final game is away to Workington.

Maybe that's what Ashton United are thinking. And the truth is probably 75% of the teams in our league would be thinking the same thing. But we have to give it our best shot or what's the point of playing.
It would be a massive challenge because we would be competing with clubs with far bigger budgets but Rushall are a village team and they have managed two seasons in the National League North.
The odds are stacked against us getting into the playoffs never mind winning the playoffs but you never know.
What will be will be.

Last night's training session ended with a rallying pep talk by Deaks to the players encouraging them to grasp the opportunity at Macclesfield on Saturday. We go there looking for the win because another playoff opportunity may not come around again soon.

MATCH DAY No. 40. Macclesfield v Ilkeston Town
Here we go with what could be our final attempt to stay in playoff contention. We need something from the Macclesfield game or Ashton to drop points at Bamber Bridge. Whitby's win yesterday puts huge pressure on Bamber Bridge who now need the points to avoid relegation. Matlock, Workington, Lancaster and Hebburn are also desperate for survival points.
To clinch the final playoff place, it's Ashton or Ilkeston and by 5 o'clock it could be settled in Ashton's favour who currently have a 4 point advantage.
But we keep going until our chances have gone. Winning at Macclesfield is pretty much mission impossible but there's always a chance that it could be our day.
