New keeper

Back up to Matt Yates ? Why would you leave a team where you were 1st choice.
Or

is Matt leaving for one reason or another?

According to footballwebpages Gainsborough played 55 matches last season and Dylan Wharton played in 44 of them. However Dave Robson was their keeper for their last six matches.

Talented shot stopper joins hometown club
20 May 2025.   by JDG Media

Ilkeston Town have announced the signing of goalkeeper Dylan Wharton from Gainsborough Trinity. Wharton, 22, made 44 appearances for the Holy Blues last season, which included his heroic performance in the FA Cup clash against Hednesford Town, with three saves in the penalty shootout guaranteeing his side a place in the Second Round Proper. Prior to this, the young 'keeper began his career at Chesterfield and was involved in the Spirerites' first team setup after impressing at the Under-18 level and while on loan at Heanor Town. In July 2022, he made the move to Sheffield United, where he featured for their Under-21s. His first season was hampered by injuries, and he was subsequently sent on loan to Gainsborough Trinity for the duration of the 2023/24 campaign, before he made the move permanently the following summer. Wharton, an Ilkeston native, is delighted to receive the opportunity to represent his hometown club, saying: "It’s perfect for me, I’ve always had a little place in my heart for Ilkeston, growing up literally two minutes away. I’ve always said I would love to come and play for this club, and now I have found my opportunity. "I’ve known Deaks [Ian Deakin] for a few years now, obviously, when I was back at Heanor and he was at Long Eaton, we played against his side a couple of times. I’ve always had a good connection with him and thought I would love to play under him. "Being at my home club and having Deaks as a manager is perfect for me. “I had a great connection with the fans at Gainsborough, and I want to do the exact same here.” On the acquisition of the new man between the sticks, manager Ian Deakin said: "Dylan is a very imposing goalkeeper, kicks it a mile, and had a fantastic season for Gainsborough last year. He has been at Chesterfield and Sheffield United as a pro as well. We’re very lucky to have him. "He’s somebody that adds quality to our squad and competition obviously for Matt Yates. I think it is important at the start of the season that we have that in every position. “I’ve got two fantastic goalkeepers now, and it will be a duel to see who gets the number one shirt come the start of the season, but I am delighted that Dylan has chosen us to come and play for.”

Gutted I won’t be at @ilkestontown_fc next season! Last 2 years have been a pleasure.

Anyone need a goalie ? 🧤

Re: New keeper

Yates is leaving according to Facebook and twitter and some fans are rather angry about this. So angry they refuse to use their own name whilst calling for Deaks to be sacked! Feels like the old days on the forum when the WhiteBall was the Wild West!

Re: New keeper

You can only think that Deaks thinks the new lad is an upgrade.

Re: New keeper

As Nally said anything? No
As Mark Frost said anything? No
As the club said anything? No

So when one of the 3 above come out with a statement then I will believe what has been said

Re: New keeper

.
Disappointment is an understandable immediate reaction on losing a highly rated and popular player. I felt that way myself but Deaks will no doubt explain all when the dust has settled. Meanwhile be assured Dylan Wharton will be a capable and suitable replacement otherwise Deaks (an ex goalkeeper himself) wouldn't have signed him.

Re: New keeper

Exactly that John. It will all come out in time. You have to trust the manager, and if there's one position Deaks will know better than others, it's the goalkeeper. The new lad's 4" taller than Matt, I just wonder if Deaks is looking for a keeper who commands his box a bit better, so we're a bit less under threat from corners and free kicks? Just a thought. Off the pitch, you will not meet a nicer, more polite lad than Matt Yates. He's been a credit to our football club.
