Matty McDonald leaves Warrington Town to join Marine
MATTY McDonald will not be part of Warrington Town's squad next season. The club have confirmed this evening that the midfielder, who was part of the squad that won promotion to the National League North back in 2023, has opted against remaining at the Cal.Delivery Stadium for the 2025-26 campaign as Yellows bid to bounce straight back from relegation.
McDonald will instead remain at Step Two with Marine, with Yellows having agreed an undisclosed compensation fee with the Merseysiders for his services.
Although McDonald was out of contract, Town were entitled to compensation in the event of his departure given he is under the age of 24 and they had offered him a deal to stay at the club. The deal also includes a sell-on clause should Marine receive any future fee for McDonald, who played 114 times in total for Town and scored 16 goals.
McDonald had been among a number of players the club had engaged with about remaining with the club, with skipper Josh Amis, defender Evan Gumbs and midfield duo Jay Harris and Bohan Dixon also offered deals, but he is the first to confirm his future lies elsewhere
Goalkeeper Dan Atherton is under contract for next year while full-back Murphy Bennett and midfielder Sam Gill have agreed terms to extend their stays at the club. It is understood Town have already finalised at least two new signings, which are due to be announced in the coming weeks, and remain in negotiations with several other players.
